One of the biggest questions we are facing is how to bridge the financial gap to restore our ocean.
One of the answers is web3.

The fate of the ocean will affect people in all communities. Thus, we need people from all communities in ocean science, management, and policy. - World Economic Forum
Humanity is at a fork in the road with regards to the future of our ocean. Do we choose to pass on a dead ocean to future generations, or do we choose to fix what is broken?
When we look at the trajectory of the past 100 years it is surely looking grim. Through unsustainable business practises, whether it being transportation, energy production or farming and fishing, with a focus of increasing short term revenue, we have passively been destroying the very thing our future depends on.
However, it seems that the global indifference to the ocean is coming to an end. A clear paradigm shift within the past couple of years portrays the issues we are facing as business opportunities with vast potential. Massive legislative work is being done to incentivise businesses and institutions to adopt sustainable practises and to punish those who do not.
Adding all this up paints the picture of a new future trajectory. Imagine what will happen in the next 30 years, when we shift our global effort from passively destroying our oceans, to actively restoring it...
A 10-step plan to save our ocean 2050 is predicted to be a bleak milestone for the ocean - but it's not too late to avert disaster. Here are 10 actions we can take to change course.
"For emerging sectors in the blue economy such as marine conservation, the challenge is to attract private finance...There is a need for much greater understanding of the risks and opportunities of blue finance." - The Economist
It is clear that the and the is lagging behind when it comes to investment and donations. Quite paradoxical when looking at the fact that ocean and blue economy investments intrinsically provide solutions for all sustainable development goals (SDGs). Mainly number 14 of course, but at a fundamental level, investment in these areas directly or indirectly supports all the SDGs listed by the United Nations.
Another contradiction to the lack of focus on the ocean is the fact that the growth rate of the blue economy is expected to outperform the growth rate of the global economy. The potential ROI projected is leaning towards a doubling during the decade of the ocean (2021-2030) from 1.5T USD to 3T USD in market value, creating more than 40 Million jobs globally.
The solution? - a strong effort in educating the mainstream in the potential of the blue economy.
What is your view on the blue economy and its future potential?

When looking at Ocean Positive Partnerships, we can define three stakeholders that all benefit from such partnerships. Companies, Ocean conservation organisations... and the Ocean itself!
Companies that has not yet engaged in such relationships before can struggle to see how exactly they would benefit. Companies that has, sees it clearly.
- Great content and storytelling
- Higher engagement rates on all communication channels
- Achieving the above, while making donations to a greater purpose
Just to name the most obvious points...
The people working to restore and protect our ocean are in dire need of funding. In fact, less than 0.01% of global philanthropic and charitable funding is reaching our ocean. An absolutely paradoxical truth when looking at how fundamental the ocean is to our survival.
It is clear that corporate and conservation relationships are self sustaining mechanisms that can play a huge role in restoring our ocean, but there are challenges... Challenges that betterblue aims to overcome in order to make it easier to engage in such relationships.
A fraction of the outcome from such a relationship is shown in this video. Created in a partnership between Paralenz and Nekton Mission.
"Every dollar invested in a sustainable ocean economy can yield at least five times the return in benefits," - High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy
As history shows, innovative solutions grow out of times of crisis. Being pushed out of the comfort zone by a pandemic and climate crisis, intrinsically sends individuals and communities through the stages of fear, learning, and eventually... growth.
Looking at the paradigm shift in recent years, it is very clear that we are starting to put more emphasis on our values of equality and sustainability. The financial results are no longer the only driving force in a company or investment, but whether the investments and actions we are making today, help increase the health of our planet, or contribute to its demise.
This shift has resulted in an increased communication and financial focus on ocean conservation and the blue economy, but we have only seen the tip of the iceberg.
Check out these four sectors set to keep an eye on through the
Ocean investment could aid post-Covid-19 economic recovery A new report by the World Resources Institute shows how investment in sustainable ocean management could support industries impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, such as fisheries and tourism, and provide minimum net returns of $8.2 trillion over 30 years.
The goal of sustainably managing our ocean, otherwise known as the UN Sustainable Development Goal no. 14, is fundamental to all other SDGs. Without a healthy and sustainably managed ocean, none of the other SDGs will matter in the long term. This is what really needs to be understood.
Luckily, a current and significant paradigm shift is happening that is worth taking a note of for a broader spectrum of businesses and investors. The era of ocean conservation and restoration has started, and this topic is slowly but surely becoming a focal point of the mainstream. Combine that with the power of purpose as a key pillar in being a valuable brand, and you have a potential positive impact of a size that has not yet been fully comprehended.
Building ocean conservation and restoration into your business or investment strategy is not only helping to secure the livelihood of future generations, but also turning out to be one of the most profitable ways forward.
One clear indicator of this trend is the fact that large financial institutions such as Credit Suisse and UBS have created reports and guides to philanthropists and investors on how to approach the blue economy.
A substantial leap in the fight to restore our ocean.
Now is the time to act Whether you are a philanthropist or a world citizen, you have a part to play in protecting our oceans. Read the guide and find out how you can get involved.
It has been agreed by the UN and numerous scientific institutions, that we need to protect and effectively manage 30% of our ocean before 2030. Today we are at around 2.6% of the Oceans being covered by managed MPAs(Marine Protected Areas).
We have a long way to go but the efforts are increasing exponentially and we have the tools at our disposal to make it happen.
An important factor aside from having the tools is the coordination of efforts, and that is where the "UN - Decade of the Ocean" comes into play.
A number of guidelines, frameworks, and reports to inform, and spark action, has been drafted by international institutions such as United Nations, World Economic Forum, C4IR Ocean, and many more, in preparation for this all-encompassing effort to restore our Ocean,

As a new year dawns we are looking into a near-future where the covid-19 pandemic is a thing of the past. Through the past year, we have seen how humanity can work together and do what it takes to overcome a seemingly impossible task.
It is now time to take on the challenge of restoring our oceans with the same vigor and collaborative effort as we have shown in the recent past.
Daunting as the task of ocean restoration might be, it is not an impossible task. Let's take a moment to look back at a report published by leading marine research institutions and universities earlier in 2020, and realize that the oceans CAN be fully restored and the solutions are already there - They just need to be put in place.
