As a proud member of the NEW SPACE PORTUGAL Agenda, LusoSpace is excited to have participated in the 2nd General Assembly, hosted at VdA Vieira de Almeida in Lisbon. Our CEO, Ivo Yves Vieira, alongside our dedicated Lusonauts João Duarte (Project Manager) and Tiago Sousa (Technical Manager), were present to engage with over 80 representatives from 39 entities. The event was a testament to our collective commitment to advancing Portugal's space industry, featuring detailed progress updates and insightful sessions on satellite licensing and space insurance. We are inspired by the shared vision and collaborative spirit that continue to drive our mission forward in Earth Observation and beyond.

Embarking on a journey through the cosmos, "Pavilhão do Conhecimento - Centro Ciência" has been home to the immersive “Missão Espaço” (Space Mission) exhibition from November 2023 until just this past weekend on April 7, 2024. This unique exhibition offered visitors an unparalleled glimpse into the life of an astronaut, where they got to experience what it's like to be an astronaut, starting from the rigorous space training, the thrilling journey to the cosmos, the exploration of the International Space Station (ISS), and the triumphant return to Earth.

Adding a touch of real-world expertise to the exhibition, Lusospace’s CEO, Ivo Vieira, shared his insights via a special video presentation, where he delved into the intriguing project Lusospace's working on right now, the constellation iATON, which is set to revolutionize marine communications.

LusoSpace has sealed a significant deal with AAC Clyde Space in a momentous stride toward advancing Portugal's space capabilities. This project, backed by the Portuguese Plano de Recuperação e Resiliência (PRR), aims not only to strengthen the national space capacity but also to generate commercially viable opportunities.

The ambitious plan of LusoSpace involves the development and deployment of a constellation of 12 satellites, each equipped with crucial VDES payloads. This constellation is set to revolutionize maritime connectivity through the VDES (VHF Data Exchange System) communication network, promising seamless data transfer rates, improved integrity, and a promising future for maritime users.

With a clear vision, LusoSpace CEO Ivo Vieira believes that "...this contract will position LusoSpace in a new exciting sector, VDES maritime communications. Our purpose is to add value in the maritime sector for people, companies, and institutions "

We’re excited to share some fantastic news with you! Back in September, Lusospace emerged victorious in a contest to develop a plasma diagnostic component for the Iter project.

Let’s delve a bit deeper into the revolutionary project known as ITER. This global collaboration is on a mission to unlock fusion energy - a clean, limitless power source. It’s a complex challenge, replicating the sun’s power process here on Earth. ITER has identified December 2025 as the projected date for achieving its first plasma, which would be a significant stride toward fusion ignition.

This win marks Lusospace’s entry into a new domain - fusion energy component supply. It’s a thrilling expansion for us, and we’re eager to contribute to this project.

Being part of this revolutionary journey fills us with pride. As we continue our work, we’re not just contributing to Lusospace’s story, but also to a sustainable, abundant energy future for our world.

🚀 The event at AED Days brought together a diverse community of space enthusiasts, industry professionals, and curious minds. It was a memorable occasion that celebrated the remarkable progress made in space exploration, where Lusospace showcased some of its work.

secretary of state for the economy Pedro Cilínio and on the last the members of Lusospace's team.

On the 25th of November, we celebrated Lusospace's 20th anniversary with our colleagues and partners. We would like to share this very special moment here, and thank everyone who was present at the event, and throughout the existence of Lusospace. Cheers to 20 more!

Durante as visitas será apresentado o novo catálogo do Espaço de Portugal, «Portugal Space 2021-22» que inclui a catalogação de todas as atividades em curso, e será debatido o estado de evolução da implementação da Estratégia Nacional para o Espaço, lançada em 2018.

At the beginning of April ’21, Lusospace closed the Technical Specifications Review for the project AR4Telecom II: Augmented Reality for Telecom Spacecraft AIT (Assembly, Integration and Testing).
This project, developed in collaboration with LuxSpace for the European Space Agency, is a continuation of the works performed with OHB Systems Bremen that demonstrated the success of an Augmented Reality framework for AIT operators and engineers, bringing significant savings to of up to 52% in operation time. Now, the consortium aims at implementing several improvements at the level of processes integration, system integration, multi-users and standardization. The framework will be tested under real satellite AIT conditions in 2022.

Lusospace delivered the last AIT OGSEs to Airbus Defence & Space (Ottobrunn)

The purpose of these OGSEs is to test/align the spectrometer responsible for the visible (UV2VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) bands of the Sentinel-5 / UVNS instrument.
Sentinel-5 aims to accurately monitor the composition of the Earth's atmosphere on a daily basis.
Multiple, identical satellites are being built to be launched into space one after the other (20 years time frame).
This will ensure decades of continuous, reliable data on how the atmosphere and climate changes are developing.
The first satellite is expected to be launched in 2022.
The requirements for the OGSE are very strict. LusoSpace team has designed and developed parts that are as compact and light as possible yet, at the same time, precise at micrometre scale and robust enough to work for 20 years.
In this project, LusoSpace is working on the edge of what is achievable.
This is possible thanks to our consolidated knowledge in the field of optics and mechanics.

Space Rider is the exciting Europe’s first reusable spaceplane planned to be launched in 2023. The experiments in its cargo, among others, include satellites inspection and Earth observation.
LusoSpace is thrilled to be part of this mission, under contract with Avio, and will be responsible for delivering the Magnetometers and Magnetorquers - critical AOCS equipment that ensure the Space Rider is “pointing” to the right direction.
In the near future, we will let you know also if the Space Rider will be able to land in Portugal’s Azores islands! 😉
