It may be unstudied gesture, the flicker of a glance, the tilt of a head, the poetic body language of people in love—with life, with each other, with a child.
The magic of award-winning Seattle portrait photographer Michael Rosenberg is his gift for capturing the singular moment of emotion that reveals an entire story. Just as you cannot fake an emotion, you cannot stage such moments. How then does the story get told?
“My task as a seeker of these stories,” Michael says, “is to become a part of the dance of intimacies of my subjects, to attune myself

Jill and I recently made a trip to Lisbon to the São Mamede Gallery to see the Steven Seinberg exhibition.
Seinberg is a contemporary, abstract artist whose work has been exhibited throughout the US since 1993, and is being shown in Europe now as well.
I have been aware of his work for years, so when we saw he was in Lisbon, we jumped at the chance to see the exhibit.
We were so in awe of his work, its beauty, proportion, impact, balance, and light. The photo you see here is one of our favorite works on paper.
Carolina, the manager at the Gallery, was completely delightful, and she mentioned that they were contemplating bringing the exhibit to Porto. We encouraged them to do so, and the exhibit will be at the São Mamede Gallery beginning on January 20.
We’re not sure how long the show will be there, so if you’re interested in contemporary art - don’t miss the opportunity to see Seinberg’s work, this show is called, And If You Close Your Eyes.
We’ll be there on the 20th to see the show again.
If you decide to attend, let them know we sent you!
São Mamede Gallery is at Rua Miguel Bombarda 624.
This is one of those days where I feel like my palette is the painting! I'm really enjoying working with these colors. They're a departure from some of my recent work. I'm loving the direction of my current painting.
Teaser alert: planning an open studio for this fall! Stay tuned.
Red is a difficult color for me to work with. It can dominate and overwhelm a painting. Somehow, as the name of this painting conveys, It Was Red Before I Knew It.

I've been working on some new pieces, and truth be told, I'm struggling a bit. The idea is clear, the implementation? A bit muddled. I know I'll figure it out, and it's good to have some tried and true influencers to turn to for wisdom and insight. These trusted friends always show up for me.
The Influencers in my Studio - Michael Rosenberg My work is highly rooted in and influenced by the Abstract Expressionist movement and the Color Field painters of the 60's and 70's. But I do not limit myself
I'm always interested in what will greet me when I walk through the door to my studio. I wrote this post as I reflected on those who inspire me and influence my thinking. As I am now engrossed in a new approach to my work, this post has great meaning for me.
If you're so inclined, I'd love to know how you embark on your creative journey. Who influences you? How do you manage your inner conversations?
The Creative Conversation - Michael Rosenberg When I step into the studio each day, I engage in a multi-faceted conversation. Before I arrive, there is already a crowd gathered; great artists of the
I moved into a new studio in Matosinhos. The light is amazing, and I am thrilled to be here.
The space is shared; on weekends and occasional mornings, there are small group classes and workshops. The challenge I faced was creating movable walls that I can wheel out of the way when I’m not in the space.
These walls on wheels are the perfect solution! Thank you, Esteve and Rui.
I've returned to my oil painting roots since I closed my photography business and moved to Portugal in 2019. I still take photos, but mostly of sunsets, the ocean, places I've been and seen.
I'm thrilled to present my updated website, (see link below). It highlights Current and Previous Works in oil.
There's more to come - I'll soon add works on paper, and there's a completely different style emerging on canvas and paper that I'm calling my Monument Series.
If you're in Portugal, I'll be hosting an open house in my Matosinhos studio this fall. Or if you're in the area and you'd like to stop by, PM me and we'll set something up!
Take a look, if you'd like, join my mailing list and follow this page.

Sitting on the tarmac after not one but two aborted take offs each time halfway down the runway.
Wow. We had planned a while ago for a quiet off season weekend in Óbidos. We walked into the annual chocolate festival. What a zoo. As we were coming here we started to get wind of what we were walking into. For those excited about this…have at it. Super crowds, lots of bad chocolate and did I mention the crowds. We lasted an hour. Not our thing for sure.
Does anyone know how to turn off Facebook Suggested for You Posts. I opened my feed and I scrolled through at least a hundred unsolicited posts and still didn’t get to the posts from friends and followers. WTF.
