Biohybrid robots consisting of both organic and artificial components have inspired various sci-fi imaginations, including action heroes and evil assassins alike. Scientists in Japan are taking us one step closer to human-like robots in our everyday lives by creating living human skin on robots. The new method not only gave a robotic finger skin-like texture, but also water-repellent and self-healing functions.

Have you ever thought that you could power your own device by dancing? Well, in the future you may be able to!

Scientists have invented a flexible and waterproof "fabric" that converts energy generated from our body movements into electrical energy. In the future, the 'Fabric' might be incorporated into clothing or wearable electronics to power mobile devices.

A vital component of the fabric is a polymer that turns mechanical stress into electrical energy when compressed or strained. It is also constructed with a base layer of elastic spandex and a rubber-like substance to make it sturdy, flexible, and waterproof.

Our interviews series continues, this time with a special guest, our great Managing Partner and founder of neusta eastern euope, Jascha Willimek.

Let's see what he had to say in response to our curiosities!

1. What is your leadership style and how does it leave its mark on the IT Recruitment field?

Not sure, if I can describe it in a category. What’s important is a mixture of high efficiency, personal development and long-term satisfaction for the employees, and unique recruiting and relationship experience for candidates and partner companies. We’re constantly testing to increase those factors and trying as agile as possible to stick to what works and throw overboard what does not. :)

2. What were the main challenges when you entered your focus market?

Our project focus market is Germany and Central Europe. That’s where 90%+ of our clients are. Our biggest challenge here are the long cycles of adapting to change or anticipating it. Before Corona, even in the IT field most of the projects were only on-site and German speaking, that changes fortunately now into a more diverse, distributed landscape.
Our expert focus market is much larger. We’re recruiting in Eastern Europe and some Asian and African countries. There the challenges are exactly the other way around: Changes come very quickly and that is true for financial aspects, local market opportunities and mentality changes. So here we have to be up to date in order to keep up to those changes.

3. Are you a dog or a cat person? (prove us!)

What would you think if I told you that our clay play from when we were kids could turn into reality?

Researchers have developed a shape-shifting material that can take and hold any possible shape, paving the way for a new type of multifunctional material that could be used in a range of applications, from robotics and biotechnology to architecture.

MIT researchers have developed a portable desalination unit, weighing less than 10 kilograms, that can remove particles and salts to generate drinking water.

The suitcase-sized device, which requires less power to operate than a cell phone charger, can also be driven by a small, portable solar panel, which can be purchased online for around $50. It automatically generates drinking water that exceeds World Health Organization quality standards.
The technology is packaged into a user-friendly device that runs with the push of one button. Unlike other portable desalination units that require water to pass through filters, this device utilizes electrical power to remove particles from drinking water. Eliminating the need for replacement filters greatly reduces the long-term maintenance requirements.

What is a distributed team?

"Distributed team" is a term that refers to a team where all members are physically located away from each other. This could mean team members are working from home, coffee shops, or co-working spaces, but that they are working where no other colleagues are based. For example, you could be a Head of Marketing living in London, managing an SEO Manager based in Bali, a Content Writer who lives in New York, and a Web Designer working out of Amsterdam.

76% of millennials place flexibility above their salary and would even take a pay cut to gain more flexibility, and with the average person now spending 90,000 hours at work over the course of their life, no wonder there’s been a change in mindset! This has meant that companies have adapted to become more employee-centric and more flexible. With talent being harder to attract and retain, remote working being easier than ever, and agility (especially now) now being key to success, it’s little surprise that distributed teams are on the rise!

What do you think about this? Are distributed teams the future of work?

Our second interview from the series "Meet the team" is here! Today you get to meet Dorian Zemba, our amazing recruiting coordinator.

Q1: Hello Dorian! How do you like to disconnect yourself from the daily rush?

Hello! Well, on a daily basis it's easier if I move my focus from brain activities to physical activity. Even if it's just a walk in the park, some gymnastics, or cleaning my home. But on in a broader point of view, I also hike during weekends or do some gardening activities. All these combined with podcasts or music are a good formula to disconnect from the daily rush and all the news.

Q2: How is neusta improving the process of a job hunt?

neusta ee bridges the gap between companies and IT specialists. On the market, it is often hard as a candidate to find opportunities only by yourself (clearly not impossible). We might have in mind 20 companies/brands where we could apply for a job, but there are actually hundreds or thousands of opportunities that we miss and we might be a better fit there. On the other hand, companies need recruiters in order to select those few candidates which are actually good for a role. I had an example: For a .NET developer role we posted an announcement on different platforms with the JD, requirements and filters needed (even a small quiz). We got dozens of applications, from which 60% were not even a fit for the industry. Imagine the time a Tech Lead would need to select through all the applications. This is the place where neusta ee brings its own value.

Q3: What do you first look at when matching a candidate with an opportunity?

For me the saying "attitude beats aptitude" is one of the criteria for selecting a candidate. I consider that a motivated candidate and his work ethic is shown in their CV or their LinkedIn profile by how they present themselves. Doesn't need to be something WOW, I'm not looking for powerful, motivational words. It just needs to be honest, clear and descriptive in terms of tech stack. Then, during our discussion (either by messages or video call) I appreciate a person that is respectful and humane. Recruiters and candidates should work together, they are on the same team and it's a win-win situation every time we match a candidate with an opportunity.

We want to thank Dorian for answering our questions and stay tuned for the next interview!

Using a unique hydrogel, scientists in Saudi Arabia have created a solar-driven system that successfully grows spinach by using water drawn from the air while producing electricity. The proof-of-concept design offers a sustainable, low-cost strategy to improve food and water security for people living in dry-climate regions.

"A fraction of the world's population still doesn't have access to clean water or green power, and many of them live in rural areas with arid or semi-arid climate," says senior author Peng Wang. "Our design makes water out of air using clean energy that would've been wasted and is suitable for decentralized, small-scale farms in remote places like deserts and oceanic islands."

In a scientific first, researchers at the University of California, Irvine have discovered fundamental mechanisms by which the hippocampus region of the brain organizes memories into sequences and how this can be used to plan future behavior. The finding may be a critical early step toward understanding memory failures in cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

Combining electrophysiological recording techniques in rodents with a statistical machine learning analysis of huge troves of data, the UCI researchers uncovered evidence suggesting that the hippocampal network encodes and preserves progressions of experiences to aid in decision-making.

Good news! Artificial intelligence and big data can help preserve wildlife.

A team of experts in artificial intelligence and animal ecology have put forth a new, cross-disciplinary approach intended to enhance research on wildlife species and make more effective use of the vast amounts of data now being collected thanks to new technology.

The field of animal ecology has entered the era of big data and the Internet of Things. Unprecedented amounts of data are now being collected on wildlife populations, thanks to sophisticated technology such as satellites, drones and terrestrial devices like automatic cameras and sensors placed on animals or in their surroundings. These data have become so easy to acquire and share that they have shortened distances and time requirements for researchers while minimizing the disrupting presence of humans in natural habitats. Today, a variety of AI programs are available to analyze large datasets, but they're often general in nature and ill-suited to observing the exact behavior and appearance of wild animals.

Would you trust in a robot to perform a surgery on you?

A robot has performed laparoscopic surgery on the soft tissue of a pig without the guiding hand of a human -- a significant step in robotics toward fully automated surgery on humans. Designed by a team of Johns Hopkins University researchers, the Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot (STAR) is described today in Science Robotics.

The robot excelled at intestinal anastomosis, a procedure that requires a high level of repetitive motion and precision. Connecting two ends of an intestine is arguably the most challenging step in gastrointestinal surgery, requiring a surgeon to suture with high accuracy and consistency. Even the slightest hand tremor or misplaced stitch can result in a leak that could have catastrophic complications for the patient.

Hello network! Today will mark the beginning of our "Meet the team" series where you can find out who the recruiters behind the JDs are.

We'll start with Daniel, the newest member of our team. He agreed to answer three questions from us and you can find out below more about himself and how he wanted to become an Astronaut, his HR experience and how he was welcomed in the team.

Q1: Hello Daniel! Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

Daniel: Hello, my name is Daniel Nitu and I’m working as an IT recruiter. I am 24 years old and I am a human resources enthusiast. I started my career in HR back in 2019 and ever since, I managed to conduct approximately 1000 interviews. I have a Master’s Degree in Human Resources and currently I can say that I am living the dream of being an international IT recruiter.

Q2: How were you welcomed and integrated within the recruiter's team at neusta eastern europe?

Daniel: Here, at Neusta Eastern Europe I can say that I’ve found a true family, not just a team. I have all the support that I need, all the training necessary. I appreciate the openness of my colleagues, it makes my beginning in the IT recruitment field much easier.

Q3: Are there any similarities between what you wanted to become as a child and your current career?

Daniel: There sure are, because when I was a child, I wanted to become an astronaut to see the galaxy and help people find a brand new home among the stars. Now I am “ Europe’s IT“😊 by connecting people around the world with opportunities that are designed to fit their potential. I believe this is similar with my childhood dream, but instead of finding a house among the stars, I try to open an universe of great possibilities and will do my best to fulfill that.

Should we be less worried when it comes to black holes? That's an intriguing question, right?

Often portrayed as destructive monsters that hold light captive, black holes take on a less villainous role in the latest research from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. A black hole at the heart of the dwarf galaxy Henize 2-10 is creating stars rather than gobbling them up. The black hole is apparently contributing to the firestorm of new star formation taking place in the galaxy. The dwarf galaxy lies 30 million light-years away, in the southern constellation Pyxis.

Many of us feel the need to take a mid-afternoon snooze—whether it's to catch up on lost sleep, reduce fatigue or increase alertness. Daily naps can also lower stress, improve work performance, regulate emotions, fortify your immune system and help reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Moreover, "napping allows you to catch up on sleep debt without altering your sleep schedule. It also removes beta-amyloid—a neurotoxin linked to memory loss and Alzheimer's," says Olivia Arezzolo. However, despite its numerous benefits, it’s important to note that napping is not a substitute for a full night of sleep. "Napping can be a bandaid, even a lifeline for some like new mothers or shift workers. It can also be part of a healthy sleep routine for people with a more regular schedule. However, it is meant to work as a supplement to—not a replacement for—regular sleep at night," says Dr. Robbins.

A power nap of 10 to 20 minutes can boost your energy and alertness without the feeling of sleep inertia when you wake up, says McGinn. Meanwhile, a 90-minute snooze can boost your memory and creativity.

Will you take an afternoon nap this weekend? Share your thoughts!

Germany is fast becoming Europe’s top destination for developers. As of 2019, there were over 901,400 professional developers spread throughout Germany’s tech hubs, with the majority situated in Munich, Berlin and Hamburg.

Germany’s technology sector has witnessed considerable growth since the early 2000s, with the sector’s annual sales revenue doubling since the beginning of the millennium. Germany’s tech sector has produced some of Europe’s leading scale-ups, and with growing international attention, talent and investment has flooded in creating one of the fastest growing tech scenes in Europe. In 2019, there were 124,000 open IT positions in Germany. Research shows that by 2030, there will be an IT shortage in the EU of approximately 700,000. With thousands of unfilled tech positions, fantastic career opportunities, and a great lifestyle to enjoy, it’s apparent why Germany has become so attractive for developers locally and internationally.

The Global Leadership Dilemma: To Be Inclusive Or Not To Be Inclusive?

We are witnessing an impassioned debate playing out in our political and cultural worlds. Should we serve our own interests or the broader interests? Tapia is adamant that 21st century inclusive leadership requires a deep understanding of how each of us is similar and dissimilar. “Calling out differences unleashes the true creative contributions of diverse perspectives that play off each other and lead to better work relationships, greater innovation, and profitability that benefits individuals, teams and organizations. This is “the Inclusion Paradox:” including what is different makes us stronger. self-awareness comes first. Seeing not only how and why we see the world the way we do, but what we might be missing, our blind spots as individual leaders and as organizations, and then finding seamless, relevant, applicable ways to embed cross-cultural agility in our daily lives and the work life of time-constrained leaders.

Why don’t more leaders and organizations make inclusion a priority? “They don’t know what they don’t know,” Tapia says. “There’s a gap in their authentic awareness. People think that diversity is enough, but to activate the promise of differences, the creativity and innovation, leaders have to become more than just open to others. They have to become skilled and competent at inclusion.” At the foundation of that competence is awareness. In politics, we see this debate play out globally. On our teams, we are constantly deciding what to include and what to exclude. In our personal and family lives, as well, we attempt to be conscious of the “I” and “we,” in terms of what drives our choices and the nature of our lives. It is not an easy task to find the sweet spot of the authentic, strong “I” and the connected, serving “we.”

Harmful content can evolve rapidly — whether fueled by current events or by people looking for new ways to evade our systems — and it’s crucial for AI systems to evolve alongside it. But AI needs to learn what to look for and it typically takes several months to collect and label thousands, if not millions, of examples necessary to train each individual AI system to spot a new type of content.

To address this bottleneck, MetaAI built and recently deployed a new AI technology called Few-Shot Learner (FSL) that can adapt to take action on new or evolving types of harmful content within weeks instead of months. It not only works in more than 100 languages, but it also learns from different kinds of data, such as images and text, and it can strengthen existing AI models that are already deployed to detect other types of harmful content. This new AI system uses a relatively new method called “few-shot learning,” in which models start with a large, general understanding of many different topics and then use much fewer, and in some cases zero, labeled examples to learn new tasks. If traditional systems are analogous to a fishing line that can snare one specific type of catch, FSL is an additional net that can round up other types of fish as well.

Future Samsung phones may no longer run Android OS, but a new operating system that’s been in development in Google’s laboratories for a few years now.

It’s called Fuchsia, but this transition won’t happen anytime soon, though. The source specifies that it will take a few years before Samsung adopts this new open-source OS from Google. And it’s too early to tell if Fuchsia OS will be accompanied by One UI or another proprietary skin from Samsung. The transition from Android OS to Fuchsia isn’t something that Samsung came up with on its own, but rather, it’s all a part of Google’s master plan to switch to a new platform built from the ground up. Unlike Android OS, Fuchsia doesn’t use the Linux kernel but new code called Zircon.

Google is developing Fuchsia to run on a wide variety of smart products, from wearables to smartphones, tablets, computers, and IoT. It was already used for the Nest hub as a pilot run.

Step #2 on our Visa Application Guide

The visa application process may sound confusing at first, but it isn't that complex. Applicants simply need to make the necessary arrangements and when they have ticked off all the requirements, they can fill out an application form, and submit it to any German consulate or embassy.

1. Collect all the needed documents and find out where you need to submit your visa application; it may be The German embassy, a German consulate, or a Visa Application Center.
2. Make an appointment for a visa interview.
3. Pay the German Employment Work visa fee.
4. Attend the interview.
5. Wait for a response on your visa application.

However, the most important part is to collect all the needed documents.

The land of invention and innovation, Germany, is the fourth-largest economy in the world and home to world-known corporates and companies. As such, it offers the chance to many non-Germans to find a job and settle in the country.

First step would be to get a job offer. The job market includes direct appointments, as well as apprenticeships and graduate schemes, which include on-the-job training. This kind of arrangement is common in German companies, which seek to ensure that all staff has the required skills. Companies also tend to appreciate employees who are familiar with Germany's business culture, with its stress on formality, punctuality and respect for rules.

We still have some job openings in Germany so don’t hesitate to check them out or contact one of our recruiters for more details!
