Fire Precautions During Summer
IN summer time, fires happen frequently due to several reasons such as electrical short-circuit, power overloads and negligent use of gas cylinders, Al-Riyadh daily reported. So it is incumbent on all people to be aware of the hazards of fire and be prepared for any eventuality.
Ali Al-Hameed, occupational safety and health expert, said summer is the worse fire season in the Kingdom. One of the main reasons is that electrical overloads happen with people using many electric appliances at the same time, causing the power to get overloaded.
“The use of air-conditioners in summer can cause power overload, especially if the quality of a home electric switchboard is poor. Sometimes, fires occur not because of overloads but due to low-quality switchboards and electric wires and cables. If the wires in the switchboard are not tightened or screwed in well, they can increase the heat of a switch, leading to a fire,” he explained.
Other reasons
A moderate percentage of fires that occurred in previous summers can be attributed to children messing around with matches or lighters while parents were sleeping. He called upon the general public to take fire precautionary measures. First, they should have the electric switchboard checked to ensure that there is no overload. Second, they should buy high-quality power strips.
Periodical inspection
Al-Hameed urges all members of the public to have air-conditioners checked frequently, especially if the air-conditioners are old.
“If you have an old air-conditioner, you should replace it with a new one. You should also rely more on wall electric outlets instead of power strips in order to minimize the likelihood of fire.”
Parental responsibility
Parents should raise their children’s awareness about the causes of fire and should have them enrolled in courses that teach them how to prevent home fires.
“Parents should ask their adult sons and daughters to check the temperature of each switch on the switchboard to ensure that none of the switches is hot. If a switch is hot, it is more likely to cause fire. Parents should use fire detectors and alarms in all rooms and remember that it only takes fire smoke just two minutes to spread all over the place and cause family members to suffocate. A fire detector can predict fire smoke in 20 seconds and gives family members time to evacuate the place before the smoke spreads. Each home should have fire extinguishers and blankets,” he said.
Parents should also run evacuation drills for their children and show them how to evacuate if a fire takes place and the lights go out. For example, they can turn off the light and ask their children to evacuate and see what kind of obstacles prevent them from leaving the place quickly.
Safety procedures
The Saudi Electricity Company’s safety guidelines urge all family to have fire extinguishers and have the extinguishers serviced periodically. Smoke detectors should be installed in the kitchen and corridors while first-aid kit should be available at home. The guidelines stress that all family members should be aware of the emergency number (998). If possible, the power switchboard should be turned off and all dangerous materials should be removed from fire’s way.
