In 2017, a team from USA researchers and Ecological Solutions - Solomon Islands - Ikuo Gumo Keanu Tigulu , David Boseto, Pioxy Bwoy and others.......conducted a baseline biodiversity survey in our forest conservation area at "Dirivola". One of the interesting findings that the team found was the confirmation of Vella la Vella white eye (Zosterops vella lavella) in vella la vella.
An endemic species that is only found in Vella, different from White eye Gizo and Kolombangara species.
It was so touching to see one of the students highlighted this species in her speech.
For most teachers, students and parents, this was the first time to know about the little history of this bird.

NeWs! A historical Environmental Speech Contest held at Pusiju for Primary School students yesterday (20.8.2024). The program was supported by Pacific-Community-SPC LMMA Small grant program ( Fiji Locally Managed Marine Area and European Union in the Pacific through PEUMP) with an objective to raise awareness to the young generation on the importance of protecting the environment but also acknowledging that they provide goods and services to us in many ways i.e. livelihood.
Hats off to DAMI Pikisagraphy & FILM for always on standby mode when community calls for support (media coverage).
A special acknowledgement to Western Provincial Government - through Environment Division for always there to witness and get involved in community initiatives. Also, to the President of Western Province Tourism Association for gracing the event for our children.
To the hard-working School Committee of Valapata Primary School, Teachers, parents and participating students and teachers.
"Change starts with a single step" lets continue to embark on positive stories and initiative for the betterment of our present and future generation.
