We’re pretty sure most elementary school kids don’t think about the steel industry, so SSAB was excited to hear that 9-year old Aiden Lawrence, son of SSAB Iowa’s Transportation Coordinator Mehgin Lawrence, not only thinks about it, he decided to build a steel mill. 🏭

Mehgin said Aiden recently had to do a school project where his class built a city. Aiden was in charge of building a factory in the town, and while his first idea was to build a car factory, he realized that without metal, there would be no cars. So, he decided his city needed an SSAB facility.

“I showed him pictures of SSAB Iowa and described what happens in various areas, and while we watched The Repurposed Series by Sierra International Machinery on YouTube, his factory came to life – with details like scrap metal from a rail car to be melted down into new steel,” she said. “Aiden has had many questions and heard me talk about my work in general, and it all came together that steel is the starting block for much of the world around him, even in a fictional city for a school project.”

Way to go Aiden! ✨

SSAB in Italy now runs production with fossil-free energy 07/02/2024

Towards a more sustainable world also at SSAB in Italy! Our Ghedi Steel Service Center has now installed solar panels on the roof of their production facility and operates fully with fossil-free energy. The new steel roof uses a trapezoidal profile provided by SSAB's subsidiary Ruukki Construction and is made from sustainable GreenCoat® color coated steel which uses Swedish rapeseed oil in the coating. 🌱

"We're happy to be able to reach our sustainability targets with the help of solar energy. We will consume roughly 50% of the solar energy provided by the solar system for our steel service center production, office building, and for the charging of our electric vehicles. The rest will be sold back to the grid,” says Julia Seeber, Managing Director, SSAB Swedish Steel S.p.A.

We had great time yesterday with Vestre and furniture designer Emma Olbers at the Stockholm Furniture Fair!

Vestre is striving to become the world's most sustainable furniture manufacturer, a mission which we at SSAB fully support. That's why Vestre is one of our fossil-free partners and their TELLUS bench is the world's first piece of furniture made using SSAB's fossil-free steel. 🌱⚙

“Working with Vestre gives us a chance to work with tangible products that are easy to relate to – there are few things more accessible to people than a bench in a public place. It's a great way to demonstrate how CO2 emissions can be eliminated in one go,” says Thomas Hörnfeldt, Vice President of Sustainable Business at SSAB.

CEO Martin Lindqvist in SSAB’s financial report for Q4 and the full-year 2023:

“SSAB's adjusted operating result for the fourth quarter of 2023 amounted to SEK 2,400 (3,768) million and the adjusted operating result for the full year was SEK 16.5 (29.3) billion. The decrease compared to last year's record high level was primarily due to a weaker market and lower steel prices, especially in Europe. SSAB continues to generate strong cash flow, with operating cash flow for the full year amounting to SEK 21.5 (22.7) billion. Against the background of this good financial position, we started to buy back shares during the fourth quarter and the Board proposes a dividend of SEK 5.00 (8.70) per share. During the year, SSAB further consolidated its leadership in the green transition in the steel industry and launched the unique steel, SSAB Zero.”

Did you know that many roofs in Stockholm and Helsinki have used color coated steel for the past 70 or 80 years and are still looking good and intact?

GreenCoat® color coated steels from SSAB offer an up to 50 years technical guarantee against corrosion and an up to 25 years aesthetical guarantee on the coating. But the GreenCoat® product service life is significantly longer than the guarantee time ensuring your roof, façade and rainwater system stand strong for decades. It is also good to know that our sustainable coating is made with Swedish rapeseed oil.

Our guarantees are based on your experience and global outdoor testing for more than 40 years. More than 10,000 panels of GreenCoat® color coated steel have been exposed to harsh climates and conditions year-round, including saltwater, snow, ice, rain, UV-radiation, high humidity, wind and storms to ensure the highest product performance. Long product life is essential for sustainable buildings. The longer a product stays in use, the better for the climate.

Villa Koppar, by Finnish architects COLLABORATORIO, is situated in the stunning natural surroundings of Kopparnäs, Inkoo in Finland. Villa Koppar comprises of two buildings: the main house of about 180 sqm, and a garage with a dependance. The villa was designed for a young and growing family with a limited budget.

The buildings are minimalistic inside out and testify to a life in harmony with nature. The architects carefully selected materials for this fully ecological, geothermically-heated passive house - which is also constructed with a prefabricated straw structure. The roof matches the great sustainability ambitions by being cladded with GreenCoat® color coated steel by SSAB. GreenCoat® has a unique bio-based coating with Swedish rapeseed oil. GreenCoat® Pural BT in Metallic Dark Silver complements the light Organowood spruce boards façade nicely and is produced in a standing seam system to complete the stylish expression. The roof was skillfully installed by the tinsmith company Västra Nylands Plåtslageri Ab with GreenCoat® supplied by Ruukki Construction.

Villa Koppar, meaning copper house, comes from the area of Kopparnäs where the house is located. The area is a wonderful combination of sandy and rocky shores, natural archipelago wonders, beautiful landscapes, and colorful history.

SSAB and Vattenfall in new fossil-free steel collaboration 01/12/2023

Happy to have signed a letter of intent with Vattenfall to deliver fossil-free steel, produced with HYBRIT technology, for use in their production. 🌱⚙

Vattenfall plans to start developing pilots next year with potential applications including power line pylons, hydroelectric dams, grid stations, anchoring structures for onshore wind power and parts of foundations for offshore wind power.

“It feels incredibly good that Vattenfall, with whom we have a successful collaboration regarding HYBRIT, will now use fossil-free steel in their products and work with subcontractors who do so too. It shows what we can achieve when we work together and is completely in line with our goal of not only reducing our own emissions but also contributing to reducing the carbon footprint in other parts of the value chain,” says Christina Friborg, Head of Sustainability at SSAB.

Shoveling fossil-free pellets onto a conveyor belt in the middle of Swedish winter is not a walk in the park! ❄

Honored to have Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson joining our CEO Martin Lindqvist and Head of Special Steels Johnny Sjöström for an out-of-the-ordinary groundbreaking ceremony. The event marked the start of construction on our new Nordic production system in Oxelösund, Sweden – an historic milestone for Swedish industry and our journey toward becoming a largely fossil-free company.

“I’m very happy to be involved in this event, because we need to also recognize when positive things happen. Everybody talks about climate transition but you are helping to make it a reality," Ulf Kristersson told a room of SSAB employees, who had gathered to celebrate the start of construction.

When the new electric arc furnace is ready in 2026, it will be:

✅ The world’s first electric arc furnace built exclusively for fossil-free steelmaking
✅ The largest of its kind in Sweden
✅ Used to melt fossil-free pellets produced with HYBRIT technology and recycled scrap
✅ Have an annual slab production capacity of 1.7 mt, which can be compared with about 1.5 mt of slabs produced at Oxelösund today
