Silvia Jiménez Alvarez aka JASSS is back at EMS in September. She is a Berlin-based sound artist, producer and DJ born and raised in Asturias in northern Spain.
Her debut full length album Weightless (iDEAL Recordings) was released in 2017, using imagined nostalgia to demonstrate her visceral approach to avant-garde composition.
JASSS’ show-stopping, apocalyptic and dramatic submission to the esteemed AD93 catalogue titled “Turbo Olé”/”We Solve This Talking”, dropped in 2020. In 2021 the reframing of JASSS’ musical language took flight with the genre collapsing, A World Of Service, featuring her voice as a central instrument alongside electronics and metal tinged percussion on Berlin’s Institutional Ostgut-Ton Label. This was accompanied by a number of revered live performances.
2023 and 2024 have been unceasingly busy for JASSS, continuing to tour internationally while working on various upcoming recorded projects which will be released in 2025.

EMS welcomes Augustė Vickunaitė in September. She is a Berlin and Vilnius based sound experimentalist with a background in physics. She graduated Sound Studies and Sonic Arts studies in Udk Berlin.
Augustė exclusively employs vintage reel-to-reel tape recorders to play, record, and create sounds, articulating diverse layers of recordings including found material, field recordings, voice, music instruments, objects, and the whole spectrum of malfunctions of decaying technology. Auguste specializes in tape music, noise, and collage music, known for her theatrical and darkly humorous approach, often exploiting errors of analog audio equipment. Her solo work encompasses tape loops and collages of found audio tapes.

Guest composer at EMS in September is Esme Rebora, an experimental musician and sound artist, constructing allegorical tales within harsh and dissonant environments, often enchanting terror and warmth in chorus.
They mainly work under the alias Bride and also produce under ROTAEWN. They have released on labels such as Psychic Liberation, Mindseyerecords, Post Hoc and Evo Natura.
Their continued exploration of the allure of the uncanny takes shape through solo productions, their record label Alloy Choir and radio residency Heathen Earth on HKCR.

Wissam Sader is back at EMS in September. He is a self-taught, Lebanese-born sound artist who specializes in experimental music and sound art. His practice revolves around performances and sound installations where he acts as a mediator, creating a space for reflection and self-awareness that invites listeners to delve deep into their own minds. In his performances, he employs repetition, rhythm structures, and a diverse range of noise and tonal elements to challenge the conventional boundaries of the sonic spectrum, blurring the lines between natural and man-made sounds.
He often uses quadraphonic sound systems in his live performances, which allow for an altered perception of sound within the space, creating an immersive and captivating experience for listeners. He is also actively involved in the curation and promotion of experimental music and sound art through his co-curatorial role at Grüntaler, a mobile project that focuses on the production and promotion of experimental music and related practices.

At EMS now: Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and Jochem van Tol are a duo of international stature that develops new music and interdisciplinary, music-theatrical projects at the intersection of contemporary electronic music, improvised acoustic music, physical theatre, film and visual arts.
They draw inspiration from the rituals of the Andes Mountains, from the silence and architecture of Japanese gardens and from the English women and Dutch men who were at the origin of the electric and electronic music of the 20th century.

Elvin Brandhi & KMRU (A|||oy) @ EMS in August!
A|||oy is a collaboration between Elvin Brandhi and KMRU.
A dialogue between both artists' worlds and underworlds, responding to each other's sonic narratives.
Field recordings, voice, noise and drones are transmuted
into an obscure abstract, ebbing in and out of focus, as a creative way finding a profound edge - a limen that both artists linger. An unlearning of both creative practices is exerted, replacing their auditory concepts of thinking sound, alloying new vocabularies through dialogue, performance, and creation.
A|||oy premiered at Berlin ATONAL 2023, as an improvised symphony of chaos and feeling, samples, and voices merging. They were inspired by both the performative intensity and the intimate space of co-creation, sound sharing, and un-thinking.

Catherine Ryan is an Australian artist, writer, performer and musician who works in media including performance, sound, text, video and installation. In August she is a Guest composer at EMS.
Her recent works examine how the imperative to be productive structures the experience of time under neoliberalism, as well as ways that concepts from musicology can provide fresh insights into the ecological crisis.
Her performance lectures blur the boundaries between traditional lectures and live performance, combining the informative and educational aspects of a lecture with the
creative and expressive elements of a performance.

Zbigniew Chojnacki is an accordion/live electronics/multitasking player, improviser who can also compose. In August he is a Guest composer at EMS. "With his accordion and heaps of live electronics, Zbigniew Chojnacki is out for musical risks without a safety net. His improvisations pulsate back and forth between ambient, noise, drone and ... blasphemy? In any case, each encounter between artist, audience, space and instrument is completely unlike any previous and all subsequent ones. At times relaxed, at times in a flurry but always on the way to new melodic connections.''
Zbigniew Chojnacki's residency has been made possible with the kind support of the Polish Institute in Stockholm.

Mem1 seamlessly blends the sounds of cello and electronics to create a limitless palette of sonic possibilities. In their improvisation-based performances, Mark .cetilia and Laura Cetilia’s uniquely subtle approach to extended cello technique and realtime modular synthesis patching results in the creation of a single voice rather than a duet between two individuals. Their music moves beyond melody, lyricism and traditional structural confines, revealing an organic evolution of sound that has been called “a perfect blend of harmony and cacophony” (Forced Exposure).
In July the Cetilias will be Guest composers at EMS.

Dana Schechter is a Berlin-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, vocalist, and producer, hailing originally from San Francisco, USA.
Monocube, who comes from Odessa, Ukraine and now is based in Berlin, explores the fields of electronic music mostly using analog synths/instruments.
In their project, the two artists will create an audiovisual project; musically they will combine melodic, harmonic, and textural patterns using modular synthesis and human voice, to be later merged with their original visual works.
This new collaboration was formed to explore the unity
which exists within the artists' respective sonic and visual fascinations, with a focus on cultivating the exact intersections where their two practices collide.
Regarding the work at EMS, the technical system of modular synthesis becomes the ideal conduit for the sonic realization of rhythmic and harmonic patterns, and their echoes in the human body. An inspirational point of reference for this idea comes from the concept of “The Evolutionary Biology of Musical Rhythm”, as found in Charles Darwin’s "The Descent of Man", which posits a deeply rooted response mechanism in the human brain and body to rhythmic sounds found within the body itself, such as the heartbeat, gait, or nonlinear oscillations of the brain's neural impulses.
