What is the point of manual therapy? It is a type of intervention that is not the be all and end all, but rather should be part of a treatment or performance program that addresses musculoskeletal conditions.
Practitioners use clinical reasoning and evidenced-based approaches to address the issues faced by each individual patient. The choice of using manual techniques combined with prescribed exercises is the basis of each session.
In essence, the effort of the practitioner would come from the manual therapy and education of the client in their issues and prescribed exercises.
This is one essential part of the treatment/performance program.
Another essential part is actually the patient's adherence to prescribed exercises and communication with the practitioner on their improvements and efforts.
Therefore, remember that it is a team effort between patient and practitioner.

"When conducting workshops or courses, seeing smiles on the faces of my attendees and students lets me know I am engaging them with information they find both fun and useful.
I do believe learning should be a journey where you feel engaged where you are not only gaining useful knowledge, but enjoying the process of learning. Fostering such a learning environment is one of my main goals, where I do believe that it is my duty of instructor/teacher/mentor to strive for that as it's an example of how one should provide the care and quality of service to one's student/client."
-Kwan Director of Qinetic Wellness
At Qinetic Wellness we believe that the learning journey should be both informative and engaging for our students/clients. Education is a core part of our service, where quality of treatment goes hand in hand with the sharing of knowledge.
"One of the poses I'm often caught on camera for according to my assistant is me raising my hand-up which looks like I'm asking a question.
It is actually used to demonstrate the mobility and path of movement for the arm and shoulder." -Kwan Director of Qinetic Wellness
When was the last time you raised your hand up? Have you tested your mobility recently?
Maybe you should raise your arm up and see how straight up it can go. The inability to do so, is a sign of a possible restriction and muscle/joint related issue.

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repair that mends broken pottery by joining areas of breakage by applying lacquer mixed with gold, silver or platinum. The philosophy of kintsugi is that the damage or break that the object and subsequent repair of it is part of it's history and not something to hide or disguise. It's a painstaking process that requires patience, skill and high quality materials.
This philosophy actually rings very true towards injuries we might experience throughout our lifetime. Understanding one's history of injury and what was done during the repair, actually is a large part of rehab therapy. Practitioners need to understand the cause of the injury in order to begin assessing the possible root of the problem. And not only that, what was done after the injury was crucial, whether it was left to heal by itself, reinjury or whether another practitioner has worked on the recovery of the patient.
An injury with the optimal recovery can sometimes allow a patient to return to full function or may even be stronger than before. It is often the care and effort put into the process of rehab and recovery that is critical to such an occurrence. Just like Kintsugi, would it not be best to use the best materials/expertise available to repair yourself?
Here is a recommend guide for your process of recovery:
1.Diagnosis/Assessment: Get a proper assessment from a
specialist that handles musculoskeletal issues to determine the
severity and type of injury.
2.Manual Therapy: A specialist with manual therapy skills can help
to improve mobility and reduce tension on muscles and joints to
allow for better recovery. Not only does it improve mobility, it also
improves the patient's ability to perform the prescribed exercises
more effectively.
3.Prescribed exercises: Your specialist should be prescribing you
exercises as part of your recovery plan, which aims to help
improve mobility, flexibility and strength in the injured area.
4.Follow-up appointments: It is important to attend all follow-up
appointments that your specialist recommends for you, in order
for them to better monitor progress and fine tune and adjust your
pain management plan to ensure optimal recovery.
5.Pain management plan: After diagnosis, its important to follow the
pain management plan recommended by the specialist, which
may include medication, exercise prescription and R.I.C.E
therapy which we will share in the subsequent points.
6.Rest: At the start, it is important to prevent damage and promote
healing by making ample rest and reducing the amount of stress
in put on the area of injury.
7.Ice: Ice is very effective at reducing swelling and inflammation in
the injured area.
8.Compression: Using wraps, guards or compression wear can
help to reduce swelling and provide support to the injured area.
9.Elevation: Raising the injured muscle or joint will help improved
circulation and reduce swelling.
10.Return to activity/play: Your specialist should be able to
recommend you a rough timeline of how long it takes to recover
to give you a rough gauge of what sort of activities you can
resume, along with what activities a person should avoid to
prevent the injury from getting worse.
So remember, like Kintsugi, the process of repair is important and can define the history or the patient, that is why the quality of care and effort put into the recovery process can allow for a patient to live their best possible life in terms of mobility.
