The 1912 Bevington & Sons organ at the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd is the oldest pipe organ in Singapore. It is used to accompany the choirs and lead congregational singing at all the weekend Masses and solemn liturgical services throughout the year.
Another wonderful organ tour this weekend with a very enthusiastic group, many who are visiting the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd for the first time.
Earlier this month, the Episcopal Regional Commission for Family, Laity and Life (ERCFLL) for the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei led by Archbishop John Wong of Kota Kinabalu and hosted by Singapore’s Catholic Family Life visited the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd and its historic 114-year-old pipe organ.
Earlier this year we had the pleasure of hosting British organist and Franck scholar Richard Brasier on a visit to the Bevington, a quick tour of the city churches, and a Hainanese chicken rice lunch!
A spectacular rendition of Malotte’s The Lord’s Prayer by Bishop Ver Cagatan Caermare and his fellow priests accompanied on the Bevington organ at the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd last weekend.

Church of St. Francis of Assisi during their visit to the 1912 Bevington & Sons Organ at the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd on 23 Nov 2023. The children, accompanied by their teachers, each got to play on the organ, and were later treated to a singalong session accompanied by cathedral organist Angela Lim.
We were honoured to welcome visitors from Singapore, China, and Indonesia on our organ tour at the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd last weekend, especially Monsignor Kornelius Sipayung OFM Cap, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Medan (Keuskupan Agung Medan), and the children who were delighted to have a hands-on experience playing pieces on the 1912 Bevington & Sons Organ, Singapore's oldest pipe organ.

We were delighted to host the University Choir, of The University of Hong Kong to a tour and hands-on experience of the 1912 Bevington & Sons Organ at the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd. Led by conductor Ma Wing Heng Kenneth, the students enjoyed the incredible experience of having their accompanists play on the organ while the choir sang pieces by Mozart, Vivaldi, and pieces by Hong Kong composers. The choir travelled to Singapore for the 7th edition of the Singapore International Choral Festival.

Last weekend, a delegation of diocesan seminarians, religious brothers and sisters, and their formators from the Xavier Immersion Program (XIP) in Chiang Rai, Thailand visited our 110-year-old Bevington and Sons pipe organ at the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, Singapore. For many of them, it was an opportunity to see and hear a pipe organ, handle real organ pipes, and even play hymns on it.

The Bevington organ has been in service almost continually throughout the Covid-19 pandemic providing music for the weekend Masses. After running for two years without servicing, the team from Diego Cera came by on a maintenance visit. This was followed by an organ loft cleaning by the Organ Scholars of the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, and the grand old dame is now ready to be played at the Singapore Night Festival 2022!

This text to this hymn "Herzlich tut mich verlangen nach einem sel'gen End", translated as “I do desire dearly a blessed end”, was written by German theologian and hymn writer, Christoph Knoll, during the plague of 1599 as a prayer for a blessed death.
In this setting by Brahms, the melody - more familiarly sung to the text "O Sacred Head, Sore Wounded" - is played on the pedals under a flowing accompaniment in the manuals.
He wrote this set of chorale preludes in the wake of the passing of his close friend Clara Schumann, and at the end of his own life.
