“The word kilim simply means a flatwoven rug, or rug without a knotted pile. There are many variations used in different languages: gelim in Iran, kelim in Afghanistan, kylym in the Ukraine, palas in the Caucasus, bsath in Syria and Lebanon, chilim in Rumania and kilim again, in Turkey, Poland, Hungary and Serbia. Moreover, flatweaving is found in some form all over the world, from the Great Plains of North America to Scandinavia and Indonesia. At times there is only a structural similarity in what is produced, but the disciplines imposed by the materials and techniques often result in strikingly similar designs and compositions.

All of them display the character and traditions of the people who have woven them by hand on basic looms, using weaving techniques, motifs, patterns and compositions that have evolved as they have been passed down from generation to generation.”

For the longest time, kilims had been dismissed as inferior to Oriental knotted carpets. Only since the 1960s or so has there been a rapidly growing interest in & appreciation of the decorative, utilitarian and highly collectible qualities of these durable floor coverings and wall hangings.

Long overdue post! Throwback to last year’s visit from an old family friend - checking out our joint showroom with but mostly catching up on gossip 🤭

Migrant workers; a valuable yet sorely overworked & under-appreciated part of our population ❤️

is a Singapore charity dedicated to helping migrant workers in Singapore. Volunteers of all ages, nationalities & backgrounds are welcomed and there are many different ways one could contribute.

In my case, I figured why not put a lifetime of carrying carpets & 6 years of carrying furniture to use by helping to move & stack donated drink cartons this rainy Sunday. Was so impressed to see some of the volunteers were migrant workers giving up their rare free time to help out! 🥹

Came across this perfectly imperfect treasure in our stock 😍 A 3-metre long Persian Wool that’s so wonderfully worn, it’s practically a kilim in some areas! Loving the erratic motifs & colours. Note the many faded patches and the various repairs done decades ago, somehow adding to its charm.

Staying in touch with old customers (aka friends!) has always been important to us - even before & highlighted how essential human contact & communication is! Had a lovely, long call with an old customer in Sydney… after which he sent me of the Pakistani & Afghan wool he’d bought from us back in the ‘80s… almost 40 years ago! Well-travelled & heavily used yet still in great condition 😍

Remembering Taher Amir today, on what would have been his 81st birthday!
Stumbled upon this old pic of us at our former neighbour with owner & baker Kelvin Soh. Seeing this has reminded me of how Amir would pop over to D**g Po several times a day, every day! He could never resist good local coffee & treats… especially when paired with a good gossip session with friendly staff & regulars 😅

Often I hear people say they can’t have a nice Persian rug because they have pets... Not true!

Unlike many of their modern / synthetic counterparts, genuine antique & vintage handmade are tough & durable - surprisingly so for such precious works of art! One has to remember that were made to serve a practical function in addition to beautifying the home.

Ended up staying open till 10.30pm tonight for a purely accidental 2-hour-long -admiring session with a very charming couple, whose impressively extensive knowledge of brought me such pleasure! Always happy to get stuck late at work for moments like this!

*SOLD* Antique handmade Persian carpet, c.1940s. A fairly common central medallion design, yet a rare find for its unusual soft green field 💚 A long-time favourite of both mine & my father’s, this was especially hard to part with... but it helped that the buyer was just so lovely & appreciative! It was an honour to help her find the perfect choice for her very first 🥰

PS. This is a few months late! I’ve been thinking of this carpet a lot recently, missing that soothing green, and realised I hadn’t posted about it yet 🤭
