Many Divers depend on dive guides to deploy their SMB during their dive, which is perfectly fine BUT divers do get complacent and they start to diving without the skill to deploy SMBs and worst without bringing it on their dive, with an assumption the dive guide will bring for them.

SMB is one of the critical safety device and the ability to deploy SMB is a very critical, must have skill when you dive for many reasons.

1. When you are going up the surface you need to make sure that you are clear from the boat travel path, SMB will mark your ascend position to these moving boats and make them aware that there are divers beneath.

2. In the open water, it is difficult to see divers from afar, you might be drifted far away from the boat and SMB can be really helpful for the boat captain to see your location.

3. SMB could also become your back up buoyancy compensating devices in case your BCD is leaking or dump valve is damages and you are unable to inflate the BCD.

There is not enough emphasis on how important is SMB to divers and we have seen even advance level divers is not able to handle and deploy their SMB confidently.
