Charlotte is equal parts chill, cuddly and crazy 🤪 She was an absolute joy to board and we loved every ounce of her work ethic!

Kudos to her family for helping her gain her confidence over time - you wouldn't believe us if we told you that she was so uncertain a couple of months ago that it took us a couple of sessions before we could pet her!

Lexi has ended her 2.5-week stay with us!

What did we work on? Teaching her that not everything is about her 😅 We placed a lot of emphasis on calm time to ensure that she is in the right state of mind instead of being overly anxious.

We also worked on her leash manners! She was quite desensitized to leash pressure on a slip leash and harness, so we switched her to a gentle leader and we saw improvements immediately - not because we used force, but because we taught her a new way of communication so that we can understand each other better.

Lexi was busy learning while her hoomans went on holiday, now it's the hoomans' turn to work hard and catch up with Lexi 😉

-----

No learning can take place when a dog is overly aroused - so control the excitement level, know when to switch it on and how far you can go. It's easier to teach a dog how to be calm first, instead of turning the excitement level up to 100 and being frustrated at why they can't settle after!

Ozzy has gone home to his hoomans! He has improved so much during his short stay with us - testimony to what consistency, structure and boundaries can do for an extremely anxious dog.

In the short 11 days, he has learnt how to relax and more importantly, to be more confident. While Ozzy is still very much a timid and anxious dog, he knows his foundations and we're sure his hoomans will continue the work!

All the best, team Ozzy 🥰🥰

🍞 Mantou 🍞

Mantou went home today so here's a photo dump of Mantou's many faces just because 🙃

Even though it was just regular boarding (not a board and train programme), we couldn't help but to teach him some basics. We're happy to share that he totally aced place, crate and threshold training. Also levelled up on his eye contact game 👀

Nico has an active family with teenagers and it was crucial to ensure that sessions with fun and engaging for the whole family ✨

He was definitely a joy to train - super intelligent and eager to please!

He might look big but he's actually only 6 months old! Can't wait for him to grow into a majestic adult 🤗

✨ Confidence ✨

When we first met Zeno, we knew immediately that basic commands were not something that we should be focusing on. Zeno was so shy that we couldn't touch him for the first 2 sessions, he would sniff and retreat on our 3rd session, and we finally squeezed in a quick split second chin scratch on our 4th session!

So what happens when you get a shy puppy and he's just not behaving like a "normal" puppy? You build confidence by giving space, time and lots of training.

By our 4th session with Zeno (and lots of hard work from his humans), he already had good recall even with distractions! Imagine his human's horror when we took the leash, dropped it on the floor and asked her to walk away 😂 The human needed to take a leap of faith to learn that she can trust Zeno (not blindly, of course!), and her taking things slow gave Zeno the time he needed to trust her too. Our job? To push you and your pup out of your comfort zones so that you can both shine!

We are so glad that Zeno and his human make such a great team, and we can't wait to watch their progress! It truly brings us unspeakable joy whenever we witness a shy pup blossom 🥰

Did you fall for my dashing looks?

Cheddar's hoomans needed some help with improper play/greetings and chewing of furniture but very often, the underlying reason for these "destructive" behaviours is having the lack of boundaries at home.

He is a very sweet boi and with those eyes, it's really difficult not to give in to him. Unfortunately, the truth can be harsh, and our job as trainers is to (as gently as possible) tell owners what they need to know, not what they want to hear - especially when it's about modifying the hooman's behaviour instead of the dog's directly.

Our advice: start boundaries training early, because it really just gets tougher as they grow older!

thelion was an absolute sweetheart - not going to apologise for almost dognapping her 😂

Both her and her hoomans responded so well to training, can't wait to watch their relationship blossom!

Hanging out on humpday 🥱

Meet Lexi the Cavapoo, lover of belly rubs! Her eyes were locked on on her lovely humans all the time so she really needed some help with calming down as well as separation anxiety.

Swipe to look at her just hanging out on her bed by the end of our session! 🥰

🔺 LABELS 🔺

Labels are useful because they simplify communication and aid understanding, but this can only be achieved if everyone has a common understanding of what the labels mean and what they entail.

When it comes to labels about contentious topics such as training methods, I personally think there is more harm than good because people already have preconceived (and often, warped) notions about these labels before joining the conversation (if they are even remotely interested to actually have a conversation about it), which is really the point at which the conversation breaks down.

Labels are extremely powerful, and can be dangerous if those in power are given free reign to place these labels. Think ecollar vs shock collar, prong collar vs pinch collar, slip collar vs choke collar. Notice the negative connotations of all the alternative names for these tools? Even more worrying is throwing these tools into a blanket category and calling it "aversive" (again, negative connotation).

Do I use tools?
✔️ A whole variety! I use my voice (!!), hand signs, harnesses, slip leads, flat collars, martingale collars, clickers, chain leashes, biothane leashes, rope leashes, etc

Do I use the same tools for every dog?
❌ No way! I wouldn't use a slip lead for a dog who suffered at the hands of someone who choked him continuously, the same way that I wouldn't speak loudly to a dog who is easily frightened.

Do I use treats/food?
✔️ Of course I do because it's an amazing primary reinforcer!

Do I use treats/food for every dog?
❌ I can't if the dog is overstimulated and ignores the food entirely. But this doesn't mean I don't reward the dog in other ways like play, verbal praise and physical affection!

In short, I would simply err on the side of caution when encountering any purist/extremist/emotive thinking.

Are there any labels that you think should be changed? Let me know in the comments below or drop me a DM!

SUCCESSFUL ADOPTION

Indeed its Fate that has brought Jill, her pawrents (Jerlyn & Craig) and her furbro (Ocean) together. A foster pawrents who eventually become official pawrents!

During May 2021, an urgent help needed for one to foster a dog who's newly rescued. Without much thought, Jill's then foster mommy responded to the insta story and came Jill who's very scared and timid. As a first time fosterers, Jerlyn & Craig enjoyed their time taking care of Jill, knowing that she is safe with them, with filled stomach and a roof to shelter her during the rainy days. It was indeed a very rewarding journey and they would encourage others to step up to foster too!

Say hello to Jill and her new family! Ps: Jill's brother, Ocean is happy to have her in the family. It's just his default grumpy face 😂

Thank you Better Dog Daily for guiding the pawrents!!! ❤️🐾

Sunday sunshine 🌄

Have been working on building Mori's confidence outdoors and I'm so proud of how far she has come! She managed to sit, down and stay outdoors, and even took treats! This may not sound like much but it is a huge step for a rescue who used to be so overwhelmed that she would plant her feet and refuse to budge.

She has also showed major improvement in terms of socialisation - she was not fazed by vehicles, construction and even people walking towards her (in fact, she has started showing curiosity towards all the things that used to scare her)!

What worked for Mori's pawrents was that they were willing to work at her pace and make learning enjoyable. Do they have more space to grow? Yup. But am I proud of them? Heck yes!

Rescues like Mori remind me of why I do what I do, and they continue to motivate me to learn more about how I can help them and their owners achieve their desired quality of life with their dogs 💕

"Mum, my ear flaps are in the way."

Can't wait to watch this little dude (Loki!) grow into his ears 😂 Not sure if he was more distracted by movement or I was more distracted by how velvety his ears are!

Did you get all my good angles?

Meet Millie the Golden pupper! Millie's family has implemented a great structure for her so that she gets enough time to rest and play. It truly heartens me to enter a puppy's household and see that they already have a playpen/confinement area to teach the pup boundaries!

Althought she's a 10/10 good girl (albeit a little pushy, but we're working on that 😉), I gotta admit, the true stars of the show are her pawrents!

Can you tell where the dog ends and the floor starts?

Meet Olaf - one of the chillest pups I have ever met! He's a Samoyed pupper who is still learning the ropes on pottying at the right spot. He also has an older brother called Tommy (swipe to look at the gorgeous boi!), and they're both still learning how to live with one another.

Can't wait to watch Olaf grow into a bigger cloud!

Look at Willow cosying up on place!

Willow was such a joy to train - we completed 3 sessions and this wonderful girl did amazing. We covered basic obedience, leash manners as well as the all-important place training for an overly excited pup! Glad to say that she was much calmer in greeting guests by our 3rd session. Kudos to her lovely family who was (and continue to be!) so diligent in training her 😊

Happy National Day, Singapore 🎉

Felt right to give a shout out to a Singapore Special on National Day - meet Yogi!

Yogi needed some confidence building and structure outdoors (read: skittish, fearful of bikes, walking where he wanted, pulling on leash etc) as well as giving him the opportunity to make good decisions. He was visibly overwhelmed during our first session so obviously he rejected food. Imagine our surprise when he showed interest in my treat pouch on our second session although we were in the presence of bikes and cars and loud noises!

While I don't always train with treats as lure/reward, it always heartens me whenever a dog accepts food in the same environment that used to make him feel overwhelmed.

Our work is far from over but let's celebrate progress over perfection, shall we? 😉

Swipe to the end to see this pupper's glow up after just a couple of weeks ✨✨✨

Moshe was incredibly fun to train, and made even better by committed owners. Puppies can be overwhelming - so we worked on confidence building for his humans as well as some basic manners for Moshe to learn how to be a wonderful family dog. Glad to say that the family now finds joy in training Moshe daily!

Watch this space for more Moshe updates 😉
