“I was a General Practitioner (GP) in private practice when I began my work with IMH in 2003 as a visiting Research Fellow. Through my interactions with patients and staff, I saw the need for a programme that would allow IMH patients, whose conditions have stabilised, to receive care in the community. So I developed the General Practitioner Partnership Programme (GPPP), where suitable patients can continue their treatment in the community with a GP. Since then, I’ve been attending to these patients, assessing their suitability and sharing how the GPPP benefits them.

GPs are multi-skilled, and those on the IMH GPPP have experience caring for patients with mental health conditions. The team at IMH also continues to support GPs through this programme, so that the quality of mental health care our patients receive is not comprised. The rapport that GPs have built with their patients play an important role in providing holistic care and influencing their first step towards seeking treatment.”

With the hope of reducing stigma and bringing greater convenience to our patients, Dr Alvin Lum started the GPPP to involve family physicians in the care and management of patients with stable conditions in the community. Since its start in 2007, IMH has referred about 3,500 patients for follow-up care to GPs on this programme. In recognition of his work, Dr Alvin Lum has received the Singapore Patient Advocate Award at the Singapore Patient Action Awards 2022. Congratulations, Dr Lum!
