Preserving the raw hides or skins to prevent them from deteriorating. Method of preservation including salting, chilling, freezing and the use of biocides.
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟮: 𝗦𝗼𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴
Allow the cured hides or skin to reabsorb any water that may be lost during curing or transportation, this helps to clean them from dirt. The process takes place from hours to days.
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟯: 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴
Removing from sheepskins using sulphide based mixture.
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟰: 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴
Removing epidermis and hair.

Based on the use of enzymes to ensure pelt is flat, relaxed, clean and ready for pickling and tanning.

Removes residual chemicals and prepares the leather for further processing and finishing.

Meeting fashion requirements by dyeing the leather in a variety of colours.

Introduces oils to lubricate the fibres and keep the leather flexible and soft.

Reduces water content to about 55%.
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭𝟳: 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝘁
The leather is stretched out and the grain side is smoothed, the water content is reduced to around 40%.
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭𝟴: 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴
Leather is normally dried to 10-20% water content. This can be achieved in a number of ways and each method has a different effect on the finished leather such as staking and dry drumming, buffing and brushing.
𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗧: 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴
Ensure the products are to level the colour, cover grain defects, control the gloss, good resistance to water, chemical attack and abrasion.
