Cordyceps Sinensis is a unique and exotic mushroom that grows in the mountains of Bhutan at an elevation between 14,500 feet and 17,000 feet, just meters below the snow line. Cordyceps sinensis literally means summer plant and winter insect in Tibetan. Before the rainy season begins, spores of the Cordyceps mushroom settle on the heads of caterpillars’ that lives underground. The fungus gets so much into the body of the caterpillars’ that it grows out through its head and drains all the energy from the insect and ultimately it dies.

Cordyceps Sinensis has a long history in Tibet Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine. The mushroom has been used for centuries to address and treat various health conditions and to maintain normal functions of all the body systems. To go to where the Cordyceps is, you have to travel for no less than seven days by horse, on foot, and finally by yak up to the snow line where the wild Cordyceps grows. The air is so thin at that altitude and the elements are so harsh that most westerners never make it to this destination.

Bhutan Cordyceps (Yartsa Goenbub) is an annual harvest that matures between May to July of the year.
Every year, in late June, licensed Bhutanese farmers will ascend the sacred mountains in the regions of Paro, Wangduephodrang, Gasa, Lhuntse, Trashigang, Trashiyangtse, and Bumthang in search of Cordyceps.

Harvesting is extremely difficult because of its remoteness near the border of the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China and negative temperature.

Environmental condition determines the quality of the Cordyceps. Bhutan's best wild Cordyceps are produced in naturally cold environments, in Khangdang of Bumthang above 3500m and Shingchenla of Laya above 5010m.

SELECTING GOOD WILD CORDYCEPS

The body section should be plump, yellowish, complete with 8 pairs of legs, while the fungi section should be intact.

I had a good conversation with His Majesty who is a humble and engaging young man with a vision for his kingdom. I asked him whether the increase to US $200 fee per day for tourists entering Bhutan will affect the tourism sector. He was unperturbed as he felt that it’s the quality of the experience that matters more for tourists who will be prepared to pay. He also felt that whilst tourism is important he needs to protect Bhutan’s pristine quality of life for the benefit of the people. Bhutan has steadfastly pursued a path of growth that is different from many developing countries striking to keep a balance between economic development and the social well being of its people.
