A Journey Through Time - Archiving Seok Tin 07/07/2024

Due to popular demand, we're excited to announce another talk by Mr. Koh Nguang How next Saturday. Hosted by yours truly. Get your tickets now!

A Journey Through Time - Archiving Seok Tin Chng Seok Tin’s practice through the eyes of artist-researcher Koh Nguang How.

Photos from Artitute's post 06/07/2024

This morning, I had the privilege of facilitating a talk titled "ARCHIVING CHNG SEOK TIN BY Koh Nguang How." Mr. Koh, a renowned art archivist in Singapore, shared invaluable insights into Chng Seok Tin's life and career since the 1950s.

We had an enriching 2-hour session listening to Mr. Koh and viewing many precious photo documentations he provided. We explored Seok Tin's career as a young artist, her journey as a curious Chinese-educated student living in the UK, and how these experiences shaped her artistic perspective. Mr. Koh also discussed the evolution of her work after the accident that caused her visual impairment, highlighting her remarkable strength and perseverance in overcoming her disabilities to continue creating art.

He shed light on her collaborations with many artists both in Singapore and abroad, and key works like the Water series, Kim Jiam series, and the latest sensation, the Samsui Woman sculpture.

A heartfelt thank you to Mr. Koh for enriching us with Seok Tin's journey. His expertise greatly aided ARTDIS and me in curating her work for "A Journey Through Time" at Ion. This exhibition wouldn't have been as impactful without his guidance and knowledge. The exhibition at Ion is on till the 15th of July, and the presentation is available onsite for viewing together with Seok Tin's artworks.

River of Ink by Shubigi Rao @ Art Basel Hong Kong
River of Ink II is a reiteration of River of Ink from 2008 at a much larger scale. The work resonates across time, with ongoing relevance in our contemporary context. Erasure and destruction are considered vehicles for resistance and redemption within this work, which comprises more than 300 destroyed books soaked in fountain-pen ink. The artist considers these texts ‘decaying information and discarded knowledge’, ranging from topics of nationalism, cultural genocide, war, conformity, freedom of speech and expression, as well as consumerism.

Saddened to learn about the passing of Pak Sarkasi Said. He was a pioneer of batik artworks, and a Cultural Medallion award winner in Singapore. Our deepest condolences to his family. RIP Pak Sarkasi Said.

Deeply saddened that Pak Sarkasi Said has passed away. He was a pioneer of batik artworks, and has showcased his Singapore brand of art in many countries, including the US, France, Japan, Brunei, and Indonesia. One artwork that sported an orchid theme earned him the Guinness World Record in 2003 for the longest batik painting.

Pak Sarkasi never forgot his roots, and made every effort to groom the next generation of artists. He was committed to developing our local arts and culture scene. In recognition of his lifelong contribution to the arts, he was conferred the Cultural Medallion in 2020.

I will always gratefully remember Pak Sarkasi for personally designing several batik shirts I wore for national events.

Pak Sarkasi will be deeply missed by generations of artists and the many Singaporeans that he has inspired. My thoughts are with his family in this time of loss and grief. – LHL

----

Amat terkesan menerima berita pemergian Pak Sarkasi Said.

Ucapan takziah buat keluarga Pak Sarkasi. Kita turut berdukacita atas pemergian beliau. – LHL

Drowning girl statue causes a stir in Bilbao Staring impassively out from the murky waters of Bilbao's River Nervion, the eerily lifelike face of a young girl drowning in the tide has been unsettling people in the Spanish city since she appeared unannounced last week.
