MORE HELP FOR OUR COMPANIES AND WORKERS

Many businesses have been impacted by the evolving situation. Through our conversations with business leaders and the trade chambers and associations, we recognise that companies, in particular the small and media enterprises (SMEs) as well as certain sectors, may need further support.

Singapore Ministry of Manpower will thus introduce further measures to help companies tide over this period. In helping the companies, we are in fact helping Singaporean workers to keep their jobs too.

With immediate effect, MOM will provide a three-month extension of levy payment timeline for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This applies to levies incurred in 2020 and will benefit around 60,000 companies.

Additionally, in view of the widespread travel restrictions and difficulties workers may face in returning to Singapore, MOM will extend the levy waiver period to up to 90 days with immediate effect for foreign workers who are currently on overseas leave

The construction sector in particular has been hard hit by work disruptions due to delays in overseas supplies and entry of foreign construction workers. As a result, construction firms are unable to fully utilise the Man-year Entitlements (MYE) allocated for their projects. Together with The Singapore Contractors Association Ltd and Building and Construction Authority (Singapore), we have worked on a temporary scheme to refund unutilised MYE due to work disruptions from COVID-19. For six months starting from 1 April 2020, firms will have the flexibility to use the refunded MYE within one year to hire new workers or renew existing ones.
