合 (Harmony) - The Singaporean Composers Series
In the last chapter, 合 (Harmony) of 起承转合 The Singaporean Composers Series, our creatives explore the “Singaporean Sound”, recalling their unique perspectives of the diverse cultural landscape that forms the Singaporean sound. This chapter emphasises the boundless possibilities of the Singaporean sound, and serves as a reflection of TENG’s efforts in empowering our Singaporean composers to build on their musical identity and crafting their own vision of what makes the Singaporean Sound, contributing to the national conversation through their works. Bang Wenfu shares about his work “The Nine Suns”, which was inspired by the fictional pugilistic move “Nine Yang Divine Skill”《九阳神功》from Louis Cha’s wuxia novels, serves as a callback to iconic 80s Hong Kong kungfu movies and epic cinematic soundtracks. By incorporating oriental melodic elements in a western orchestral template, Wenfu crafted an epic cinematic soundtrack, inviting listeners on a journey of a realm of mesmerising imagery and drama in Wuxia novels. The next piece, “Harmony”, was specially written and produced by TENG’s creative team, Head of Music Joel Nah, Creative Director Samuel Wong, Producer Bang Wenfu and Composer-in-Residence Chow Junyi. It serves as a retrospective, weaving together the rich tapestry of TENG’s musical journey over the last 20 years. This medley features music from TENG’s earlier albums, Stories from an Island City (2016) and Heirlooms (2019), which celebrates the ensemble’s unique interpretations of Singapore’s folk and dialect music, reminding audiences of TENG’s journey throughout the years. 合 (Harmony) is a tribute to TENG’s exceptional family of composers and producers who have helped shaped TENG’s signature sound over the past 20 years. The chapter brings together talents of the individuals who have been instrumental in creating our most iconic works, while continuously challenged and evolved our ensemble’s unique

转 (Re-Direction) - The Singaporean Composers Series
The third chapter 转 (Re-direction) of the 起承转合 The Singaporean Composers Series, the composers tackles the question of “How do Singaporean Composers push their musical boundaries”, sharing how they embrace innovation and push the boundaries of the conventional musical structure and sound. The chapter reflects on the boundless creativity and innovation of a Singaporean composer, reshaping Singapore’s musical landscape in their works. In Dr Phoon Yu’s “A Transi for The Common Man”, the work recalls the piece by American composer Aaron Copland’s ‘Fanfare for the Common Man’ but instead conjures themes of a common man’s life and death. The producers, Vinod Dass and Rufus Varghese then weave together the evocative composition alongside darker electronics, inviting on a journey through a tapestry of emotion and sound that resonates with the soul. “Seafarer” by acclaimed jazz composer Chok Kerong paints a vivid portrait of a ship’s voyage out in the sea’s vast expanse, creating a sense of mystery through the interlocking rhythms and ambiguous harmony. In his exploration with traditional instruments, Kerong also pushes the preconceived notions of what traditional instruments can achieve. “A.I. Funk” by award-winning composer Koh Cheng Jin challenges the foundation of traditional music as an atonal work. The work is inspired by technology’s growth and importance in society. Through the collaborative effort of Cheng Jin and Alex Hooi, the work expounds on the boundless possibilities of the electro-acoustic style, transporting listeners to a futuristic soundscape. 转 (Re-Direction) is perhaps the most sonically unique and unconventional compositions by our local creatives. In these works, our composers explore unconventional composition styles, experiment with various sonic textures and address unique themes in music. — Get your tickets to 起承转合 The Singaporean Composers Series today at http://bit.ly/TENGSGComposers
