In February 2024, just shy of the tenth anniversary of Alvvays’ self-titled debut, its second song and single, “Archie, Marry Me,” reached a rarified threshold for our streaming age—one-hundred million listens through a single platform. For the world’s biggest pop stars that’s an average achievement, but for an upstart indie rock band then writing in a backroad farmhouse on a Canadian island, it represented a staggering proof of connection and widespread resonance.

Now remastered and reissued with deep cut “Underneath Us” to mark a glorious decade of deadpan jangle, Alvvays feels that way from end to end—literally, from the opening stalking-you-with-love anthem “Adult Diversion” to the ennui escapism of sci-fi closer “Red Planet.” In a little more than 30 minutes, Alvvays give us a song about loving someone to actual death (“Next of Kin”), how keeping secrets will destroy what you think you want (“The Agency Group”), and another incisive song about the societal demands of love and marriage (“Atop a Cake”). When Molly Rankin, Alec O’Hanley, Kerri MacLellan, and Brian Murphy cut these songs with Chad VanGaalen in 2013, long before they had a record deal, they were, in fact, young adults trying to figure out these encroaching exigencies for themselves. Again, these problems don’t age; some of us just happen to be lucky enough to age out of them.

The ten-track full-length captures the raw emotions and explosive energy of the young post-hardcore band early on. Remastered in 2024 by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios, this 20th anniversary reissue comes packaged in a deluxe, silver mirror-board jacket with printed inner-sleeve.

"A Collection Of Splits And EPs 2004 - 2015" captures the growth of Italy's Raein, including tracks from their out-of-print split 7"s with Loma Prieta, Funeral Diner, Ampere, Daitro, and Phoenix Bodies, along with an early 7" EP "Doden Marscherar At Vast." This collection of songs was remastered in 2024 by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios and comes packaged in a custom, embossed jacket and printed inner-sleeve. Reformed in 2023, Raein is considered to be one of the leaders in emotional post-hardcore, carrying a similar spirit and sound as bands like Orchid, Saetia, Pagenintynine, and others.

Had some time to listen to this release and I'm happy to place this in one of my favs for 2024. Unconventional hardcore song structure and riff, primitive sound recording and proud to have it sung in the native tongue. Love it!

SIHIR - Ular Akan Patuk LP

"Sihir’s unrelenting debut is fifteen minutes of pounding hardcore refusal that sounds really very much like a burning police headquarters. Razor sharp threads of feedback weave themselves together tightly around our necks as echoes of clanging sheet metal create a euphoric industrial warp over traditional music. The band is the combined sonic force of punks from Colombia, Nusantara , Spain and Sweden, converging like avenging angel upon the cursed imperial core of Berlin to answer back in full. They blend sideways raw punk incantations with crasher instincts, stirred well and shaken up through phased percussive rumbles that forcibly pin you to the wall about your weak bu****it. Javanese artist Enka Komariah comes through with a spellbinding artwork telling the story of a person with a tiger demon spirit who steals corpses from graves on the night of Kliwon to reach supernatural powers. From the right to our bodies as women to the idiocy of imperialism (“Illogical! From East to West!”) the righteous lyrics howled in Bahasa Melayu demonstrate a band with their bloodshot eyes open to our burning world. Despite or because of this, this is somehow a euphoric record, the furious sound of joyful militants smiling in the dark, certain of a victory not far off."
