In our new collection is this captivating medium-sized medicine cabinet (W87.5 x D45 x H101.5cm). It features a protruding top, rectangular drawers, and charming paper labels with herb names.

A sleek distressed black sideboard with grid patterns on the doors takes centrestage. Its angular lines lend a modern touch, beautifully contrasting with the ornate mirror frame above. This gold gilt mirror, with carvings of phoenix & peonies, was converted from an elaborate old carving from Guangdong that once framed an altar-niche. Old pot lamps bookend the scene, while an assortment of antique ceramic black Shanxi pots adds depth to the display.

The sideboard measures L203 x D50 x H88cm, while the mirror measures L144 x H139cm.

A pair of antique armchairs from Shanxi province, with elegant, slender posts and beautiful patina.

The curved back splat is supportive and surprisingly comfortable, while elongated S-shaped arms encourage an upright posture. This particular style is known as the “Southern official’s hat” chair, where the crest rail at the top joins the rear posts continuously without protruding. The chair’s name references the curved crest rail, which resembles the winged official’s hat worn during the Ming dynasty.

Tuesday Inspiration: A Brussels Home Where Art and Life Intertwine

Today, we’re stepping into the captivating Brussels home of Shu Gui and Misha. Shu Gui, a Beijing native now working in a Brussels hospital, and Misha, an EU official specializing in South Asian affairs, have created a home that beautifully blends their diverse collection of vintage pieces with contemporary art.

Their shared passion for travel and art collecting is evident throughout their home. From contemporary artworks to antique furniture, Chinese ceramics to European artifacts, every piece has been thoughtfully chosen during their global adventures. The result is a harmonious and inspiring living space that truly reflects the couple’s eclectic tastes and rich experiences.

An antique tall kitchen cabinet from Zhejiang province. The highlight of this cabinet are the different lattice patterns on the doors and this fretwork extends to part of the sides too. Lights have been added to illuminate the cabinet from within, it adds a warm glow and accentuates the lattice patterns. Dimensions: W111 x D54 x H216cm.

The Chinese words on the calligraphy couplet says: 茶映盏毫新乳上, 琴横荐石细泉鸣. This evokes a feeling of serenity, blending the elegance of tea, music from the zither and the sounds of nature.

End of summer SALE: A pair of very interesting doors from Fujian province, with paintings of two characters in opera costumes. At first glance, you might mistake these for traditional temple Door Gods, but look closer - the right figure is actually female, which led us to believe that they could be the Jade Emperor and Queen Mother of the West. This is reinforced by the Chinese character 王 (wáng), which means king, on the tiger’s forehead on the male’s costume. Most of the circular mirror pieces are already missing (these can be replaced upon request) and only a row of diamond-shaped mirrors across their foreheads remain.

Two stunning repurposed art deco mirror frames from Shanghai. The smaller mirror is made of teak wood and was originally the top of a dressing table. It now makes for an interesting & unique wall mirror. Dimensions: W52 x H69cm.

The tall, full-length mirror is made of rosewood. It was previously a wardrobe door, and now stands as a one-of-a-kind floor mirror. Dimensions: W63 x H168cm.

This antique Tibetan cabinet in burnt orange & dark ochre features embossed paintings of flowers, clouds, and auspicious knots. Made of Pinewood, these cabinets were used as family altars and also as storage for religious scrolls, family jewellery, silk ceremonial clothes, and yak butter used in lamps. At L117.5 x D45 x H93cm, it's the perfect size for both storage and display.

The green ceramics on top are old oil lamp stands, and the table lamp was converted from an old ceramic pillow. All these are available in-store, or DM us for more info!

An eye-catching slim Elmwood table from Shandong, beautifully refinished in burnt orange with an antique finish. Its slightly tapered legs end in elegant hoof feet, adding character to the piece.

On the table is a unique lamp repurposed from a vintage pot, and the two old pots on the floor have interesting embossed patterns.

An antique coffer cabinet from Shandong province. Known in Chinese as ‘闷柜 mèn guì’, which loosely translates to ‘cabinet with closed (secret) storage’, this piece was once an important part of a bride’s dowry.

The bottom section was originally a hidden compartment accessible only by removing the top drawers, this was designed for security as it allowed valuables like gold and jewelry accompanying the bride to be safely tucked away during the journey to the groom’s home. That section has now been converted into three functional drawers for modern use.

A beautiful antique chest from Shanxi. Its original red lacquer remains luscious & striking even though the front paintings have largely faded. Sitting on a base with carved wavy patterns, this piece offers unique storage for living rooms or bedrooms. Its height also makes it ideal as a side table. Dimensions: L86 x W53 x H72cm.

Shanxi merchants were among the earliest businessmen in China, and many accumulated enormous wealth from banking and salt trading. During the Qing dynasty, Shanxi furniture was considered to be among the finest produced, which is one reason Shanxi style furniture has lasted so well.

Shanxi furniture has a strong & robust look, as exemplified by the antique Elm wine table & the pair of black lacquered cabinet doors featured today. Elmwood is native to Shanxi, and this table boasts excellent patina and a cusped apron, making it particularly special. Dimensions: L107 x W45 x H85cm.

The pair of doors is in very good condition, largely due to the lacquering technique that helped preserve the material, allowing it to remain in good condition over generations. Combined width 92cm, height 125.5cm.

TUESDAY INSPIRATION: The Cheng Family Residences (程氏三宅 chéng shì sān zhái), a complex of three interconnected houses, are located in Tunxi district, in picturesque Huangshan city, Anhui province. This ensemble includes Cheng Mengzhou’s primary residence and two adjacent houses.

All three are Ming Dynasty buildings exemplifying the renowned Hui-style architecture, featuring a “H” shaped layout with front and back courtyards. The Hui style, known for its use of brick, wood, and stone, is beautifully showcased here with elaborate & intricate carvings in all three materials.

Particularly impressive are the wood carvings on the 美人靠 (měi rén kào, literally “beauty’s backrest”), the ornate wooden carving & railings that adorn the second-floor exterior wall, encircling the courtyard. It is actually a wooden structure combining a bench seat on the inside with a curved railing above that serves as a backrest.

In Hui style houses, the ground floor typically serves as a public space, with many converted to shops over time, while the upper floors house the family’s private living areas and bedrooms. These well-preserved buildings offer us a rare and valuable glimpse into the lifestyle and architectural ingenuity during the Ming Dynasty.

This Zhejiang square Jumu table features irregularly sized drawers and two-tone drawer fronts, both visually interesting. The base stand has a “cracked ice” lattice pattern, and the rich honey brown finish enhances the overall look. Two leftmost drawers have brass bat-shaped handles, symbolizing good fortune. Dimensions: L60 x W60 x H81.5cm.
