We were quite surprised when 2 of our riders were discussing which is safer.
Scooter or motorcycle?
The scooter rider was quite adamant on his ride being the safer of the 2.
Wanna know our thoughts?

It's the motorcycle.

This is a bit difficult to explain without bringing up exceptions.

If we were to compare the Yamaha T-MAX, a premium 560cc scooter, it is definitely safer than a budget 150cc motorcycle like a CB150 because of ABS, better and thicker tires, etc.

However, let’s say scooter is a Kymco Gran D**k 150 and a MT-15
They are both 150cc, and two wheels. But the motorcycle is safer and also more expensive, why is that?

Tires and Wheels. The MT15 has larger wheels and thicker tires. They are better in absorbing imperfections on the tarmac and also result in the motorcycle being more stable at speeds and under hard braking. If you have ridden both of them, you will notice it is easier to balance the MT15 than the Gran D**k because of this.

Brakes. The MT15 comes with ABS and the Gran D**k doesn’t. ABS is simply a system in which it prevents the wheels from locking up under braking.

The only argument in favor of the scooter is that if a car were to hit you from the sides, being on the motorcycle means your legs would be completely crushed between the bike and car, but on the scooters, that wouldn’t happen. However, this type of crash is extremely rare and this doesn’t make the scooter safer than a motorcycle.

That said, the key difference would be the rider.

So in summary.. Ride safe and stay safe~

28/03/2024

Imagine having your forearms jammed in your shoulders everytime you go over a bump.

That's exactly what we experienced when we took a rider's bike out for testing.

Turns out, his forks are gone-case.

So how often should you actually be servicing your forks?

The frequency at which a motorcycle fork should be serviced can vary depending on several factors such as the type of motorcycle, riding conditions, and the manufacturer's recommendations. However, a general guideline is to service the fork every 16,000km to 24,000km or every 1 to 2 years, whichever comes first.

Regular fork maintenance is crucial for ensuring optimal performance and safety. It typically involves tasks such as inspecting for leaks, checking and adjusting fluid levels, inspecting seals and bushings for wear, and replacing worn or damaged components as needed.

If you notice any unusual handling characteristics or noises coming from the fork, it's advisable to have it inspected and serviced by a qualified mechanic such as us as soon as possible.

The next time you ride into our workshop for your engine oil servicing, do take a look at our engine oil bottles.

Do you know what those weird numbers and alphabet combinations on the engine oil bottle are for?

Those are viscosity.

Did you know?

Using the wrong engine oil viscosity in your motorcycle can have unwanted effects on your motorcycle engines especially in our hot tropical climate:

1. **Poor Lubrication**: Singapore's climate is generally warm and humid, which means that thinner oils (lower viscosity) are often recommended for motorcycles to ensure proper lubrication, especially during startup and in high-temperature conditions. Using oil with a viscosity that is too high may not provide sufficient lubrication, leading to increased friction and wear on engine components, particularly in a motorcycle engine that operates at higher RPMs compared to most cars.

2. **Reduced Cooling Efficiency**: Motorcycles typically have smaller engines and less cooling capacity compared to cars. Using oil with incorrect viscosity can affect the oil's ability to transfer heat away from critical engine components. If the oil is too thick, it may not dissipate heat effectively, leading to increased engine temperatures and potential overheating issues, especially in Singapore's hot and humid climate.

3. **Decreased Fuel Efficiency**: Using oil with the wrong viscosity can increase internal friction within the engine, leading to decreased fuel efficiency. Considering our petrol prices are sky high, this will cause a significant dent in our wallets..

4. **Increased Wear on Clutch**: Many motorcycles use a wet clutch system, where the clutch is bathed in engine oil for lubrication. Using oil with the wrong viscosity can affect the operation of the clutch, leading to slippage or premature wear. It's crucial to use oil that is compatible with wet clutch systems and meets the manufacturer's specifications.

5. **Potential Warranty Void**: Using the wrong oil viscosity may void your motorcycle's warranty if it leads to engine damage or malfunction. Manufacturers typically specify the recommended oil viscosity for their engines, and deviating from these recommendations could result in warranty issues.
