🎹#ICYMI Did you know that the elegant piano gracing our Auditorium foyer was one of the 50 grand pianos spotlighted at the unforgettable Sing50 concert? 🎶 Courtesy of the Sing50 Fund's Adopt a Piano initiative in 2018, these grand pianos found new homes in 50 selected schools and organisations. 🎉 With great pride, SKH is the only hospital that received the Steinway-designed Lang Lang Baby Grand Piano. Mr Bernard Sim, an SKH patient, struggled with weight loss from a young age and attempted conventional methods like dieting and exercising without success. After undergoing SKH’s SWITCH (Sengkang Weight Improvement Therapy & Complete Health) programme, he had a sleeve gastrectomy in 2020 and a circumferential belt lipectomy in 2021 for body contouring. Once 160kg, Mr Sim is now 90kg. Despite misconceptions that these surgeries are "quick fixes," he faced immense resolve, pain, and discomfort to get to this point. 💬 Dr Kok Yee Onn, Consultant, Plastics, Reconstructive and Aesthetics Service at SKH, who performed the surgeries, emphasised that body contouring surgery aims to improve one’s health and function by removing excess skin and fat. Excess skin can cause discomfort, hinder daily activities, and impact self-esteem and mental health. In severe cases, it may lead to mobility issues, infections, and repeated hospital admissions. 🧐 Did you know eczema has a strong hereditary link? Dr Brian Chia, Consultant, Dermatology Service at SKH, explains that eczema has a significant hereditary component. If a parent has eczema, the child’s likelihood of developing it is over 50%. If both parents have it, the likelihood is even higher. Although eczema cannot be cured, its symptoms can be alleviated through treatment. Dr Brian highlights that between the ages of 2 and 12, as a child’s skin and immune system strengthen, 80% of eczema patients may see their symptoms gradually improve. However, if not properly treated before age 12, eczema may persist. 🏊‍♂️He also shared a helpful tip: swimming can be beneficial for individuals with eczema, as chlorine helps reduce harmful bacteria on the skin.
