Ever had an itchy spot on your back you just can’t seem to reach? 🥵
The Apley Scratch test is a simple and quick way to check your shoulder range of motion and flexibility. Let's see if your hands are able to touch each other while behind your back! 🤝
Did you know that doing self-stretching exercises to improve shoulder flexibility has been shown to improve shoulder pain in hospital nurses? Having good upper limb mobility helps us in our daily activities and also reduces our risk of injuries 💪
Some shoulder stretches you can try include:
- Sleeper stretch
- Pectoralis stretch
- Towel stretch
Perform each stretch in a slow and relaxed manner. Stretch to the point of tightness or mild discomfort. Each stretch position can be held for up to 30 seconds. You can aim to incorporate a 10 - 15 minute stretching routine into your daily schedule.

Have you tried the Old Man Test? 👴👵
This fitness challenge is a simple and fun way to test your strength, balance and flexibility. It involves putting on your socks and shoes while standing on one leg. Try your best not to lose your balance!🦵
Research has shown that being unable to perform a single leg stance for at least 5 seconds can be a predictor of injurious falls. While a good balance time may vary depending on your age, here are some general benchmarks:
- Under 60 years old: Aim for at least 30 seconds
- 60 - 69 years old: Aim for at least 20 seconds
- 70 - 79 years old: Aim for at least 10 seconds
Some balance exercises you can do include:
- Foot taps on a step
- Single leg stance
- Tandem walking
You can aim to perform each exercise for 30 - 60 seconds, 3 sets per leg. Hold the position as long as you can keep good form. Do ensure there is a stable support within reach while doing these exercises. Let’s do our best to keep our balance steady pom pi pi!✊

Dr Brian Anthony Tian, Senior Consultant at the Department of General Surgery, explains that heavy weightlifting and intense workouts can increase the risk of developing hernias due to the excessive strain placed on the abdominal wall.
While exercising is beneficial for overall health, he emphasizes the importance of practicing proper techniques and avoiding overexertion to prevent hernias. Dr Tian advises individuals to listen to their bodies, gradually increase workout intensity, and seek medical advice if they experience symptoms such as a noticeable bulge, pain, or discomfort in the abdomen.
