It brings joy to recall how our parents taught us to break our first half-boiled eggs, add pepper and soy sauce, and sip them from the dish. Or how they faithfully took us to the same delicious curry chicken noodle stall every Sunday morning, a place that has since changed location. Or the long queues at the same Yong Tau Foo stall in Chinatown, with the team of uncles in white singlets as their corporate uniform.

Why don’t we just snap a photo of that memory? Consider this: how often do you refer to those memories in your vast collection of digital photos? Do you notice the details of how the food is presented or the amazing team that creates it?

Photographs can’t capture people who are no longer present. How would you paint a picture of a memory of loved ones who used to queue up for food when mobile phones weren’t available?

This Saturday, Susan Olij offers an opportunity to reminisce and capture those memories on watercolor paper, just like Harry Potter pulls a piece of his memory into a magical Pensieve to discover details he couldn’t have observed otherwise. Who is ready for this magical moment to delve into that intricate memory? Sign up via link in bio.

We first met Zhongda when he visited our previous location at Golden Wall Centre near Lasalle College of the Arts. He quietly and humbly showed a keen interest in Caran d’Ache and Faber-Castell pencils. What sets him apart is his acute sense of artist quality, as he is naturally drawn to “single pigments” and “lightfastness.” We were reminded of his dedication to produce the finest masterpiece when he visited our next location at The Cathay, near the School of the Arts Singapore (SOTA), and requested a 70cm x 100cm Pastelmat from Clairefontaine, indicating his ability to produce large-scale pieces. It was then we realized he is a serious artist, and buyers start to collect when an artist dedicates his life to produce art.

Our recent conversation with him offered profound insights into the mind of an artist. Zhongda helped us realize that the relationship between an artist and an art store doesn’t have to be merely transactional; instead, an art store provide tools and solutions to help artists create with ease. His perspective reinforced the idea that our role is to support artists in their creative processes, ensuring they have what they need to produce their masterpieces.

“Walking art journeys with artists” is more than a tagline for us. It reflects our evolving mission as an art store dedicated to serving artists who visit us. As we mature in this role, our renewed perspective opens up opportunities for building meaningful relationships grounded in faith, hope and love.

Sit back, and enjoy the creations of Zhongda !

As an art store, we always wonder about the differences between pencils and why their prices vary. We posed this question to a representative from Caran d’Ache, who patiently explained that the graphite sourced in Switzerland makes all the difference. It ensures consistency, smoothness, and adjustable tonal values.

Our research revealed that the binder used in these pencils is similar to the recipe used in the Luminance series. The graphite nibs of the Grafwood pencils glide across paper like butter, yet without the plastic feel of lower-priced brands.

We also spoke with , a budding architect and interior designer, about the Caran d’Ache Grafwood Graphite Pencil. After visiting Switzerland and purchasing this series, he never looked back.

texted us one day to share her review of Touch alcohol-based markers. She believes people should know the difference between the Touch markers made in Korea by Shinhan (the same makers as Shinhan Premium Watercolors) and imitation “Touch” markers from Shopee and AliExpress. In her words, it’s “a world of difference.”

We are heartened that our communication with artists opens up opportunities for both parties. On one hand, the art store understands the artist’s requirements, and on the other, the artist conveys her thoughts about the creative process.

Because of her feedback, we have changed the name of the marker from Touch Twin Marker to Shinhan Touch Twin Marker. We hope this will guide artists to choose quality, create long-lasting art, and recognize the potential value and appreciation of their work.

Let’s have a conversation together!

Pastel art is somewhat underrated in Singapore, despite its tactile nature, which encourages artists to feel the textures of the pastels on their fingers and express their creativity directly onto the surface. Despite the messiness, there’s a certain satisfaction in witnessing the explosion of colors and the gradual formation of pictures as the movement of the palm shapes them. We’re grateful to Monica Lim for providing the vision and guidance that leads participants toward creating immensely rewarding artwork. We hope that this event will further Monica Lim’s vision to support underprivileged children and women aided by .

During our exploration, we delved into the hard, soft, and extra soft pastels by Koh-I-noor, a Czech manufacturer renowned as one of the world’s largest producers and distributors of art supplies, writing equipment, and stationery. Founded in 1790 by Joseph Hardtmuth of Austria, Koh-i-Noor Hardtmuth a.s. has made a lasting impact on the artistic world. Interestingly, the same factory is now utilized by Cretacolor, which explains why Cretacolor offers a subset of products from the original producer. We also discovered that Pastelmat by is a remarkable addition to the pastel world, as it allows for repeated layers of pastels to be held tightly with a firm grip, eliminating the need for fixative, which can darken the drawing.

Join our community of color pencil and pastel enthusiasts for our upcoming meet on June 8th.

This Saturday, we celebrate the art journey of best-selling author turned artist Monica Lim. Monica’s love affair with color began during the pandemic in 2020, leading her to discover a newfound passion for painting. With her signature style of vivid colors and dramatic contrasts, she quickly made a mark in the art world, winning her first art award in 2023.

Monica’s art journey goes beyond personal success. She sees art as a gift from God and has dedicated her talent to benefit others. Through her art sales, she has raised over $24,000 for charity by 2023. Indeed, God loves a cheerful giver.

Our art journey with Monica began during our days at The Cathay, recommended by a mutual friend who recognized her talent and generosity. She not only offered advice and insights on our art materials but also inspired us to give back to the community. Because of her, we started selling original art on our web store, made our first donation to a non-profit organization of her choice , and initiated an art material sharing movement with a box of pastels and Pastelmat.

During the event, Monica will share her insights into the world of pastels and demonstrate how to “grind the face of pastels onto the rough textures of Clairefontaine Pastelmat until they break down and reveal their true colors.” I’m playing with words here because her expertise extends beyond art; she is also a best-selling author, known for co-creating the beloved Danger Dan series. She should be smiling at this text right now.

See you this Saturday at “Artist In The House with Monica Lim.” Sign up via the link in the bio.

We were intrigued by Van’s color pencil drawings of wildlife, which were unlike anything we had seen before. We scheduled a meeting to have a conversation and discovered that his passion for wildlife started from a long family history of TCM, where Chinese practitioners kept rare species of reptiles and parts of almost extinct animals in a large, spooky glass jar filled with mysterious liquid that promised longevity for both the contents and the person who consumed them.

Van spent most of his childhood and growing-up days drawing wildlife from library books and went on to perfect his craft at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. During our first meeting, we discovered his love for watercolor from , so we suggested a series of lightfast color pencils from the same brand to complement his existing selection for creating long-lasting art. We were appalled by some of the sketches in graphite which were painstakingly done over the last two decades. This man is passionate about his art!

Today, he passed us his selection of color pencils from based on more than 20 years of experience creating wildlife with colored pencils, and the results will be published in our web store under Artist Selection. If you visit Marymount Factory Direct Store, you will find his art prints selling for only $25.

For the first drawing, he inserted his name ‘VAN’ into the body of the fish. Can you find it?

We had a very fruitful conversation an artist yesterday. As part of the team at Overjoyed, we question our purpose in the art scene. Overjoyed started out with a simple purpose: to offer artists a choice in art materials not predetermined by existing art stores and to bring into existence what does not exist. However, when we bring bespoke things into the scene, it seems not many are interested in these products or want to take a step to try what is not popular or from a brand that is not famous.

Artists ask us why we don’t sell Arches, Daniel Smith, Winsor & Newton, etc. There are two reasons: firstly, others have already done it. Why do it again? Secondly, we are relational people. We love the people from Clairefontaine, Pebeo, Schmincke. Who is going to do something for them? Who is going to know about the vegan watercolors created by Schmincke? Who is going to know that Schut Paper Mill puts tulip buds into their papers during the tulip season? Who is going to know that Pebeo doesn’t create metallic colors with metal pigments or glitter but pearlescent colors that look like Pearl?

This artist came to us looking for a pouring medium. She also shared that she is an artist who prefers control when she paints. We have met over 50 artists and seek to add value to their work. Meaning, if an artist comes to us, even if the medium is so common, we share our knowledge and almost always find something in the shop that surprises the artist. But this time we are dumbfounded. How do we suggest a pouring medium that is controllable?

We suggested this pouring medium by Pebeo x Nancy Wood thinking that it could be just another pouring medium. Then we discovered the words on the box and realised this could be the product that could bring out her unique artistic qualities and character: Controllable Pouring Technique.

Communications opens up possibilities and pleasant surprises.

That which has been is what will be,
That which is done is what will be done,
And there is nothing new under the sun.

How did this Saturday workshop start with Evon Ler?

We were delving into the magic of her loose floral watercolors. Where did the magic dust come from? It is likened to pixies and fairies floating around the beautiful out-of-this-world floral blooms. Wait a minute. Do these flowers even exist in this world?

We bring forth this question to many artists. Will digital art replace the world of visual arts painting? We have the answer here. No matter how digital art evolves, it will always work within the limitations of the software, just like how it comes to a point where all messages from ChatGPT look the same. Honestly, we used ChatGPT in this message, but we strictly asked the app to “correct the grammar” and not “write a description.” We insist that the “heart-ware” remains where it is.

Applying the same principles, Evon is a magician who concocts her own potion every time. Her evolution has no limits because her recipe has none. Join her workshop to find out what ingredients she adds to watercolor to discover the next color evolution of loose floral watercolors.

Previously, one of us had the privilege to visit the Schut Paper Mill in the Netherlands, owned by the Clairefontaine group. The paper production process emphasized one important principle: “We Dutch do not throw away anything.”

Our meeting with SPD has enabled us to see what every individual can excel in, without focusing solely on charity and what they cannot do.

Recently, we had the privilege to meet a couple of kind individuals who volunteer for an organization that serves the underprivileged. Both of them emphasized that good materials are scarce in the organization. Interestingly, on our side of the world, art materials are oversupplied and underutilized.

We believe in picking up things that seem to have no worth to one individual but can bring a lot of value to another. I’m not referring to Carousel here. We are simply about bringing another perspective into our world through communication and acceptance.

As such, we are making an open call to collect art materials at our Marymount Factory Door Store. When we say “handmedown,” we strongly encourage the materials to be something you would feel proud to pass down to another brother or sister. After all, these art materials will land in the hands of another individual who could lend a hand back to you somewhere down the road.

Throwback to the mouthwatering food illustration community meet where artists gathered to celebrate the art of capturing delectable treats on paper. From colorful fruit tarts to intricate pastries, creativity flowed as participants indulged their artistic cravings. The mysterious pastry provided added excitement, with each bite inspiring new strokes of the brush. As illustrations came to life, so did connections between fellow enthusiasts, making it an afternoon filled with artistic inspiration and community camaraderie. Let’s relive the joy of that deliciously creative gathering!

A big thank you to for being an inspiring teacher and wonderful co-host at our food illustration community meet! Your guidance and expertise added so much to the event.

A special thanks to .ek and the community for taking the time to join us. Your presence made the gathering even more vibrant and inspiring, sparking more laughters and joyful conversations.

We walk alongside passionate dry media artists who have used color pencils like , and , and they all agree that Caran d’Ache has the highest lightfastness reputation in the art industry. This gives art collectors confidence when they collect their work. Caran d’Ache has legendary Swiss precision and consistency with unparalleled lightfastness and pigment load in each pencil.

We have spoken to other artists who rave about their Caran d’Ache collection from more than two decades ago, and the brilliance is sealed in its quality and never deteriorates. Many artists who walk on art journeys with us say that the entry level per set of 120 colors is very high, but offering loose pencils lower the entry level to help them get started with these finest quality pencils. Walking art journeys with artists also means we add value to their work and share industry knowledge with inspiring artists.

As we embark on our art journey, we’ve discovered Si Ying (), a brilliant watercolor artist who has graced us with her presence over the past 10 years, dedicating her time to finding inspiration in food subjects. We are grateful to God for opening our eyes so that she did not pass us by unnoticed. Doesn’t this remind us of the many people who have likely shared a part of themselves with us—through conversations, friendships, impartation, or sharing a table at a food court? How much thought have we put into giving back to those who have shown that we once existed in this world?

We are overjoyed to walk our art journey with Si Ying as a way to say thank you for being a part of our art journey. You are the reason why we can walk this far, and we dedicate the series of events tomorrow, Food Illustration In Watercolor workshop (limited seats left) and Food Illustration Community Meet (fully booked), to you.

We would also like to extend our appreciation to James Lim (.ek) who generously lent his assistance in inviting his vibrant food illustration community () to join us for this community meet. If you’re interested in continuing to paint food subjects and painting alongside fellow hungry artists, this Instagram community is definitely not one to miss!

Here is another big reveal: we have also chosen fruit tarts from Wunderfolks (), a Singaporean homegrown pastry brand, to be our painting subject. Wunderfolks is another inspiring story that emerged from the global pandemic in 2020, one of many true tales of people who began their art journey at the same time. We hope that by marrying art and business, our artists can find opportunities for their work to be commercially valued. We support local artists and businesses, and let’s walk our art journeys together!

We visited Andy Yang (), an outstanding multidisciplinary artist who primarily works with oil paints, creating seamless blends and beautiful brush strokes on linen canvas. He believes in artist-grade oil paints from various brands, and we are thrilled that Norma Artist Oil Paints are on his consideration list.😎

He also shared his collection of humongous brushes from , inspiring us to do more for the art community. His enclosed studio space led us to consider odourless turpentine or thinner, and then we realized we already have one called Terpin from .😅

He also encourages us that oil paints are the way to go for committed full-time artists like himself. He takes pride in his work, and we will add value to that by continuing our art journey with him, providing premium artist paints, mediums, and surfaces that contribute to masterpieces in art galleries. Let’s stay on this art journey together and not give up!

Tag 3 full-time artists who may need encouragement right now and need to know that this journey is not easy, but having someone else on the road makes it better, and when one falls, the other is there to keep them warm.

Happy Hari Raya Aidilfitri! We are thankful to the Muslim creative community for their support over the last two decades. We hope today will be a great time with our family and friends, and that we can enjoy art during our free time.

We would also like to celebrate the birth of our house brand, OVJ, which has been with us for more than a decade. Our first product was the 100% cotton canvas board and stretched canvas at Golden Wall Centre (beside Lasalle College of the Arts). From today until April 14, 2024, all OVJ house brand products are on a 30% discount. We are excited to celebrate our house brand with you on this grand occasion and happy holiday.

We visited the SPD Ability Centre to explore avenues to walk art journeys together. The center provides an exceptional stitch binding service, allowing for the customization of fabric, paper, and even the embossing of names. These handcrafted items have been marketed as wedding gifts, corporate gifts, personal presents for teachers, and for personal use. The beneficiaries are highly skilled artisans who take great pride in their craftsmanship. We deeply value their expertise, and in our forthcoming collaboration, we will refrain from seeking discounts on their services. We kindly request that you accept the prices they offer should you decide to engage their services.

After accompanying artists on their creative journeys, one lesson we’ve learned is the importance of reducing product costs to enhance affordability. We’re thrilled to reintroduce Mitsubishi Uni Pin Drawing Pens to our Cineleisure Retail Store, priced at $1.64, making them the most affordable drawing pens in Singapore! Our membership is free, and members can enjoy an additional 10% discount on these pens.

To assist brush calligraphy artists in managing rising costs and adapting to the decreasing value of the Japanese yen, we have reduced the selling price of Tombow Dual Brush Markers to $2.90. This is our second price reduction, following Holbein, another Japanese brand. We take pride in being the only art store to maintain prices after a GST hike and lowering them after a dip in the Japanese yen, aligning with our mission to offer a diverse range of art materials at the most competitive prices.

All Tombow Dual Brush Markers can be found only in our Orchard Cineleisure Retail Store.
