Your kind donations help MAGNA save lives of people in Syria and Turkey affected by the catastrophic earthquake.

"The trauma caused by the earthquake is very deep. Those who survived have lost their sense of security and safety and at the same time face uncertainty about the future. MAGNA staff heard a lot of stories about those who have lost relatives or are missing, moreover they are afraid to return home and despite the severe night frosts they sleep on the streets and in cars.
They warm themselves by the fires. Many will have to live in such conditions for a long time. For Syrians, it is something similar to what they experienced during the war bombardment, from which they fled their homes and now another disaster caught them up again," Denisa Augustinova, operational director of MAGNA.

The scale of the war has caused immense suffering to all the people in Ukraine. Constant bombing, no or very limited access to essential needs, insecurity, and fear. This is the daily reality of 37 million people who stayed in Ukraine.

We have been in the affected zones since the very first day of the conflict. Medicines and supplies are being sent to 21 hospitals in 15 areas of the country where they are most needed.

Those are words which Siham was repeating to herself again and again when she fought for life after being diagnosed with breast cancer. She is one of the hundreds of patients from the north of Lebanon we provide medical treatment to.

„Keep positive, it helps with healing,“ said Siham. „Write down some notes about how you feel and what you think. Talk to your doctors, because they can share with you information that could help you. Also try to talk to others, who coped with the same problem as you. They can give you hints that may help you to get through difficult times."

Now, when she is healthy again, she can not forget the help of MAGNA‘s midwife Douaa and all of her colleagues who help her.

Crisis in Lebanon

The number of people, especially women (92%), seeking help as victims of violence has almost doubled in three years. Frustration with poverty and poor living conditions have led to a significant increase in partner violence.

MAGNA in Lebanon provides not only medical aid, but also helps children and adults with psychological care to cope with the trauma of violence.

It has been a month since we started to provide medical aid and save lives in Ukraine. Thanks to you.

It has been four weeks since the war in Ukraine broke out. Thousands of people have lost their lives or got injured, hospitals are being targeted. Almost 4 million people have fled from the war and found shelter in the neighboring countries, 7 million people have escaped from violence and left their homes and now they are displaced on Ukrainian territory.

The humanitarian situation is getting worse, especially in war areas, healthcare is not available, or there is only very limited access to it. MAGNA has been distributing medicines to the directly affected communities and hospitals in Ukraine for 4 weeks now.

In the past days, we have dispatched another transport carrying medicines and medical supplies, that will help save lives in Kyiv and Chernihiv. Our medics are also trying to distribute necessary medical supplies to the most affected regions.

This is what the distribution of medicines in the most affected areas of Ukraine looks like . The MAGNA co-workers, doctors and nurses who operate in the vicinity of cities like Kyiv, bring the medical aid directly to the civilians. They often hide for days and hours from bombing and attacks in the sheds and are almost completely without access to health care and medicines.

Medicines and medical supplies for 300.000 people are on their way to Ukraine.🇺🇦

Another delivery of medicines, medical supplies and material for emergency surgeries and childbirths is on its way to Ukraine. MAGNA teams on the spot will deliver them in the coming days to hospitals in Kyiv and Chernigov, where they are inevitably needed. We are also looking for options on how to deliver medicines and supplies to hospitals in Kharkiv and other Ukrainian cites too.

Number of injured people is increasing and doctors still need new medical supplies. Considering constant military operations, delivery of humanitarian aid is very complicated.

Thank you for helping us and saving lives with MAGNA.

MAGNA have already distributed all the medical supplies and medicines from the warehouse in Kyiv. However, hospitals are increasingly in need of medical material, so more supplies are on the way for emergency medicine, but also for deliveries and basic care.

Transport in Ukraine is complicated by the lack of humanitarian corridors and the changing security situation. We have created a network of warehouses, through which we distribute the material in order to reach as many beneficiaries as possible. Hospitals, especially in areas with high level of hostilities, need all available medical supplies and medicines.

We must also prepare for the evacuation of the most seriously injured and sick to safer regions, which will increase the need for medical supplies in the hospitals there as well.

Ukraine needs your help.

Slovak humanitarian organization MAGNA has started distributing medicines and medical supplies from its warehouses in Ukraine. The first material is delivered to medical centers and medics in the area northwest of the capital Kyiv, which is experiencing heavy fighting and many civilians suffered injuries. In addition to health centers, people are also treated by medical staff who have stayed in the area and are cooperating with MAGNA. In total, the aid is intended for an area where more than 15,000 people live. (For security reasons, we don't publish the exact places where we distribute aid.)

"In the provision of medical aid, we must also ensure that the basic principles of providing humanitarian aid in war conflicts are respected. At the same time, we ensure the supply of other necessary medical supplies and medicines to Ukraine and their subsequent transport directly to the hospitals where they are needed, ” says MAGNA Operations Director Denisa Augustínová.

We have been assessing the needs of several hospitals directly in Kyiv and collecting additional information. Overall, it turns out that hospitals need all available medical supplies. From the MAGNA humanitarian fund and from the money from donors to help Ukraine, we have released additional money for the purchase of specialized kits for medical facilities, primarily for urgent care, obstetric care and trauma care.

Poverty in Lebanon is growing rapidly. Within two years it has doubled, from 42 percent in 2019 to 82 percent living below the poverty line in 2021. Currently, up to a third of all Lebanese suffer from food shortage.

Lebanon is facing widespread poverty caused by the economic crisis.

The economic downturn, lack of employment and poverty are fundamentally exacerbating all aspects of life of Lebanese population. The number of people, especially women (92%), seeking help as victims of violence has almost doubled in three years.

Violence against women is increasing, as is violence in general.

“I couldn’t imagine seeing such a level of suffering in Afghanistan again. I was hoping we wouldn't get into the situation I remember from the late 1990s. People have hope but they still have little idea of what the future will bring,”says Dr. Baqi, MAGNA Afghanistan.

That is why at the moment MAGNA is opening its next mission in Afghanistan where we will help the most vulnerable, especially women and children, by providing health care.

“7 out of 10 elderly people in threatened regions of Ukraine have trouble going to see a doctor or getting medication. The latest analyzes show that up to 98% of the elderly suffer from at least one chronic disease, more than three quarters have limited mobility and are dependent on the help of others,” says Roman Barylo, MAGNA Operations Coordinator in Ukraine.

The bad situation in terms of access to health care is precisely what MAGNA intervention in the conflict-affected areas of Ukraine is addressing.

There is more than just the political level in the conflict in eastern Ukraine. More than 3 million people in eastern Ukraine are dependent on humanitarian intervention, and any war would make matters worse.

The most difficult conditions are in the vicinity of the so-called contact line, a kind of buffer zone between the opposing parties. People are unable to get to a doctor, and medical services are very limited. More than 300,000 children are among the most endangered.

Magna opened its mission in eastern Ukraine in 2020 and is providing medical aid in the region. You can also help and join us in our effort. Donate here and now at https://donate.magna.org/

In MAGNA humanitarian missions, we are confronted with an increasing number of people who are starving, sick, or fleeing their homes. The reason? Climate crisis. It threatens people’s health, especially in places where they have not had access to basic health care for a long time.

It concerns us all. Years of prosperity and economic boom have damaged our climate and are fundamentally worsening living conditions. Extreme droughts and torrential rains destroy crops and bring about the spread of deadly diseases.

We see three consequences of the climate crisis. Food shortages, which can cause malnutrition, water shortages, which cause various diseases, and both of these factors drive people out of their homes and turn them into refugees. Climate change, therefore, also results in instability, which gives rise to violence and war.

That is why we are providing medical aid for more and more children and adults. How can you help?

“Enel is 10 days old and we found her during a mobile clinic trip in a camp just a few kilometres from the Syrian border. Her mother died 5 days after giving birth and there is no one to take care of little Enel. We have therefore provided her with substitute milk and we will also monitor her regularly,” says Sirine Zeaïter, our Project Coordinator in Baalbeck, Lebanon.

For several years now, MAGNA has been providing medical intervention in the Baalbeck-Hermel area, treating Syrian refugees as well as vulnerable Lebanese populations suffering from the Syrian crisis. We have been operating a clinic in the town of Baalbek, with a mobile clinic journeying to settlements around the town, where we have registered a huge lack of health services provision.

Worldwide, 241 million cases of malaria were reported in 2020, 14 million more than the year before. This increase was caused by the Covid pandemic. The distribution of mosquito nets that act as disease prevention was interrupted, and due to the lockdown, people could not see a doctor in time. The year 2020 also recorded 69,000 more malaria deaths compared to the previous year. 2/3 of these deaths were caused by Covid.

The region most affected by malaria is sub-Saharan Africa, where MAGNA runs several missions. As many as 95% of all malaria cases occur in this part of the world, with 80% of deaths being among children under 5 years of age. Malaria is not difficult to treat, but unfortunately, often the obstacle lies in the lack of access to effective medical aid.

16/12/2021

“Combating climate change is not just about emissions, waste, recycling, riding a bike, or responsible behaviour. For us at MAGNA, it is a struggle for human lives. It mainly affects countries with underdeveloped health care and makes the access of every single resident to the doctor even more difficult,” explains our Operations Director Denisa Augustinova.

In the last years, many MAGNA missions have increasingly been forced to adapt the medical humanitarian aid they provide for people in need to changing climate conditions. To more people being infected with infectious diseases – such as malaria, dengue fever, or cholera - but also to the results of extreme weather conditions which negatively impact food self-sufficiency and increase the number of starving people.

“I am very grateful to be able to see a doctor. Until MAGNA and its doctors arrived here, I couldn't afford to pay for all the medications and fees, so I didn't go anywhere. I was constantly sick. Now that I'm pregnant, it's all the more important. I am happy,” smiles Amal, a Syrian refugee living in Lebanon.

Since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis, more than 1.5 million Syrian residents have fled to Lebanon. The majority live below the poverty line. MAGNA opened its mission in Lebanon in 2016, and since then has been providing tens of thousands of out-patient consultations and medical treatments every year to children, women and their families living in makeshift settlements.
