Our movie Kambium1492
premiers today at Biennale Ve věci umění / Matter of Art in Prague!

Kambium1942 is a docufiction departing from the oak grove near the Slovak village of Kokošovce near Prešov. Growing on the volcanic ground, the oak threes in this area grow particularly slowly, resulting in an exceptionally strong wood with dense growth rings, formed by the growth in the vascular cambium. Due to its special qualities, the wood from this oak grove was used in the nearby saltworks in Prešov, where salt deposited from the prehistoric sea was processed since the 16th century.

Wood was also exported to port cities throughout Europe, It was used only for the construction of the largest and highest quality ships. Historical records stored in museums in Vienna and Budapest describe the transport of the Kokošovská dubina oak to Genoa, at the time when Christopher Columbus was there also. Accidentally arriving to the continent known today as America, this voyage launched the period of the European colonisation of Americas and formation of a world order as we know it today.

The main narrator of the story is the Roma rapper Čavalenky. The film focuses on how history was shaped, how small historical events influenced the big ones that we know from history textbooks and why it is important to reevaluate them.

In addition to oaks from Kokošovce, there is also music. The first songs were carried by the slaves heading to America as their only "luggage". From their songs, for example jazz or rap was later formed, which came along via he same route to Europe.

Názov výstavy vznikol kolážou vybraných slov z jednotlivých názvov vystavených prác. Toto intuitívne spojenie slov tak zastrešuje spoločnú výpoveď jednej generácie študentiek a študentov Katedry intermédií. To čo medzi nimi najviac rezonuje je téma tela vo vzťahu k technológiam a (alebo k) prírode a to z rôznych perspektív. Rovnako ako názov, tak aj jednotlivé práce vytvárajú akúsi koláž prístupov k tomu, čo sa nás ako ľudstvo bezprostredne dotýka - klimatická katastrofa, technológie a ich vplyv na naše telá, identity ale aj prírodu.

Práce študentiek a študentov reflektujú témy akými sú: hľadanie spirituálnych vzťahov technológii, človeka a prírody (Jakub Černošek); skúmanie hraníc našich tiel, ako ich dokážu rozširovať technologické protézy a ako hyperkonektivita prostredníctvom nich dokáže meniť naše “ja” (Patrícia Chamrazová); prepojenie ženského tela s prírodou, čarodejníctvom, zraneniami a tiež oslavou a obdivom rôznorodosti (Nela Pučeková); hľadanie rovnováhy v dobe rýchleho technologického vývoja (Vikoria Revická); preskúmavanie našej reality (Tsudoi Masuda) alebo aj virtuálnych svetov (Karolína Kožíková), či eskapizmus a útek do prírody, prítomné vnímanie krajiny v roli dočasného pustovníka (Ivan Kalev); otázky o tom čo znamená byť človekom, kde sú hranice človeka, kyborga, technológie, biológie, a ako uchopiť rozpadávajúcu sa predstavu o človeku ako vládcovi sveta (Ján Siman); podobne ako v románe Vegetariánka od Han Kang, uvažovanie o premene ľudského tela na rastlinu v časoch klimatickej katastrofy, kedy sa nová citlivosť k mimoľudským aktérom*aktérkam a planéte stáva nutnosťou (Paula Malinowska).

Tomorrow in Trnava ✨

❝ The current ecological and political situation or state of society, marked by the context of recent period of at least two years, make contemplations on fragility more pressing than ever. Such slogans as stability, value, and guarantee have lost their meaning. After all, the impossible and unimaginable seems to be possible and real.

The international exhibition Needle & Balloon is a response to the issue of fragility and related feeling of borderline tension. It follows central motifs in the context of contemporary visual arts, emerging on the background of deliberations on economic systems, the alarming ecological situation, the state of our planet, and the impact of today’s decisions on our potential future. The curator’s project focuses on a new-age emotionality and inner feelings, following inclinations towards personal mythology and renewed ideas of romanticism. The exhibition goes hand in hand with the feelings of anxiety, melancholy, and sadness, and intriguing aspects of fiction, mysticism, unsettled reality, and a dystopian and post-apocalyptic atmosphere. ❞

"Farocki už v 70. rokoch upozorňoval, aby sme boli ostražití pred zdrojmi správ aj pred spôsobom, akým sa prihovárajú. Preto vo filme Neuhasiteľný oheň zahrnul svedectvá priamo z prostredia, kde sa vojna udiala. Na rozdiel od mainstreamových spravodajských staníc a televízie dal v Neuhasiteľnom ohni priestor tým, ktorí vojnu zakúsili na vlastnej koži. Pri Farockom je téma propagandy, mediálnej manipulácie a osvojovania si týchto mechanizmov v myslení a cítení západnej spoločnosti nesmierne dôležitá."

Why is it important to see Harun Farocki's exhibition these days?

"As early as the 1970s, Farocki warned us to be vigilant about news sources and the way they speak. That's why in his movie The Inextinguishable Fire, he included testimonies directly from the war zones, unlike mainstream news stations and television. In the case of Farocki, the issue of propaganda, media manipulation, and the acquisition of these mechanisms is extremely important in the thinking and feelings of Western society."

Diela Haruna Farockiho sú náročné, koncepčne a politicky provokujú, nútia nás zamyslieť sa nad temnejšou stránkou používania technológií a reprezentácií obrazov a nad tým, že agitačné nátlaky vo vojne nemusia byť odlišné od tých, ktoré používajú médiá a reklama. Harun Farocki's works are challenging, conceptually, and politically provocative, forcing us to reflect on the darker side of the use of technology and image representations, and on the fact that agitation pressures in war may not be different from those used by the media and advertising. „Prvý Farockiho film Neuhasiteľný oheň získal okamžite medzinárodné uznanie. Začína sa čelným záberom na mladého Farockiho usadeného za stolom v obleku a kravate. Už tu sa zrodil filmový jazyk, ktorý bude nasledujúcich päťdesiat rokov príznačný pre jeho bohatú kariéru. Mal rád experimentálny dokumentárny formát, esejistický štýl, ktorý v sebe kombinoval text, rozprávanie a nájdené masmediálne obrazy.

Mladý režisér za stolom vážnym tónom predčíta prepis svedectva obete bombardovania na**lmom vo Vietname. Zápalná tekutina bola obľúbenou zbraňou hromadného ničenia amerických síl v juhovýchodnej Ázii. Farocki končí čítanie len s malou zmenou intonácie, pozrie sa do objektívu a položí otázku: „Ako vám môžeme ukázať na**lm v akcii? A ako vám môžeme ukázať zranenia spôsobené na**lmom? Ak vám ukážeme obrazy popálenín, zavriete oči. Najprv zavriete oči pred obrazmi. Potom zavriete oči pred spomienkou. Potom budete zatvárať oči pred faktami. Potom zavriete oči pred celým kontextom.“

Z ničoho nič sa načiahne za horiacou cigaretou a bez mihnutia oka sa popáli na zápästí. Sucho poznamená drastický rozdiel medzi teplom, ktoré vytvára cigareta (štyristo stupňov) a teplom na**lmu (tritisíc stupňov).“

„O Farockim sa dá povedať, že bol etnografom kapitalistického životného prostredia, ktoré vo svojej tvorbe dôkladne rozoberal a analyzoval. Pre jeho prístup a tvorbu je podstatné skúmanie významu obrazov, ich genézy a najmä mocenských štruktúr, ktoré sú do nich vpísané. Skúmal intersekcie medzi vojnou a technológiami a úlohu práce v kapitalistickej spoločnosti.“
