African-Indians, Indians of African origin.

There are at least 20,000 of an African-origin ethnic tribe who have been living in near total obscurity in India for centuries.

Descendants of Bantu people of East Africa, Siddi ancestors were largely brought to India by Arabs as early as the 7th Century, followed by the Portuguese and the British later on.

Others were free people who came to India as merchants, sailors and mercenaries before the Portuguese slave trade went into overdrive. When slavery was abolished in the 18th and 19th Centuries, Siddis fled into the country’s thick jungles, fearing recapture and torture.

These African first settlers in India were originally known as Habshis, which is Persian for Abyssinian (the former name of Ethiopia was Abyssinia). But those who rose through the ranks of royal retinue were honoured with the title Siddi, a possible etymon from the Arabic word for master, sayed/sayyid. It is not entirely clear when the use of the term Habshi declined and Siddi replaced it, but today, Siddi describes all people of African descent in India.

This 10-year-old girl "Marwa" sells tissues in the city of Aswan, 🇪🇬 Egypt.

She rushed to watch a marathon 🏃‍♀️ organized for children from a distance, and she quickly ran towards them to ask if she could participate.

Although she did not pay the participation fee (EGP 200), nor did she have the sports shoes 👟 or clothing to participate, still she wanted to take part and had the desire to win!

The organizers did not deprive this innocent child from playing. Marwa ran barefoot 🦶. She ran as she used to run after people in the streets to sell them tissues 🧻. She ran with the pride of the poor as if flying towards the sky to embrace the finish line 🏁.

To everyone's astonishment and surprise, she came in first place and won the gold medal 🏅. Despite her unfortunate circumstances, she believed in herself and didn't allow hurdles or setbacks to get in the way of accomplishing her goal. ❤️❤️❤️

Ancient name of Africa

Before the Eur0pean settled for the word Africa, the continent was called many other names. They include Corphye, Ortigia,Libya, and Ethiopia, Alkebulan

Other names such as the land of Ham (Ham means dark skins), mother of mankind, the garden of Eden, Kingdoms in the sky, and the land of cush or kesh (referring to the Cush*tes who were ancient Ethiopian) were used.

No one knows the source of the names for sure. However, the theories below shed some light on how this second largest continent got its new name.

Roman theory

Some scholars believe that the word originated from the Romans. Romans discovered a land opposite the Mediterranean and named it after the Berber tribe residing within the Carnage area, presently referred to as Tunisia. The tribe's name was Afri.

Weather theory

Some believe that the name was coiled from the continent's climate. Deriving from aphrike, a Greek word that means a land free from cold and horror. A variation of the Roman word aprica, which means sunny, or even the Phoenician word afar, which means dust.

Africus Theory

This claims that the continent derived its name from Africus. Africus is a Yemenite chieftain who invaded the northern part in the second millennium BC,It is argued that he settled on his conquered land and named it Afrikyah.

Phoenician Theory

Another school of thought suggests that the name is derived from two Phoenician words friqi and pharika. The words mean corns and fruits when translated. Hypothetically the Phoenician christened the continent as the land of corns and fruits.

Alkebu-lan “mother of mankind” or “garden of Eden”.” Alkebulan is the oldest and the only word of indigenous origin. It was used by the Moors,Nubians, Numidians,Khart-Haddans (Carthagenians) and Ethiopians.

There is little or no certainty on the source or meaning Africa. Several scholars have tried to explain the origin of the word, but none is convincingly correct.
