Tuesday League - Game 11 - Home vs Studio Bar
Into the second half of the season now and our 6th home game, this time against Tu's team, was a victory including the all-important Beer Leg. :D
Thanks to everyone for a fun night. :)
Tuesday League - Games 9 & 10 - Home vs Allstar Bar & Yindee Bar
No team photo's from the past two games, also this week we had a bye.
Two fun matches as always with Allstar Bar and our brothers & sisters at Yindee Bar.
Notable results were Will & Chris beating Gary and Tony "3-sheets". ;) :D in the Allstar match; Versus Yindee Bar, Mona gave Bee B a lesson; Dave played a great game to beat Kai; A narrowly missed final ball over the pocket at 1-1 meant Yindee were able to take the Beer Leg win, our first BL loss this season!
Fun nights, both. Thanks to everyone :)
Today we said goodbye to our friend Jamie Rhodes.
He passed away last week in hospital after his latest illness.
He got a low-key send-off this afternoon in a quiet corner of Thalang Temple grounds.
Jamie was one of Karon's local characters and an ever-present in the time that I have been here. You always knew where you stood with Jamie because he'd be sure to let you know(!) often in an amusing manner--at least to the casual bystander. :)
He'd had a full and interesting life and so his evolution into a raconteur, with the look and delivery of Syd James, was almost inevitable. We whiled away many an afternoon knee-deep in casual banter. I'll miss that.
Rest easy old fella, your work here is done.
Tuesday League - Game 8 - Away vs Night House
A first for Oasis Bar this week as we played against the Night House, newcomers to the Tuesday League. p'Nai's squad already has a reputation as a decent team having taken Elephant Bar & both No Name teams to 4-3 score-lines, albeit as losses. We were interested to see what they had in store for us up at the their spot on Kata hill.
Bang drew Tim in the first game slot and the match-up was over reasonably quickly with Bang winning 2-0.
Ae vs Gary in game slot 2 took a lot longer. Gary took the first game with a decent 3-ball finish; Ae took the second after Gary narrowly missed a kick shot leaving Ae a simple black pot; As with the first two games, the third went to the wire but a mistake by Ae gave Gary the opportunity to clear up, which he gratefully did.
Aek vs Bee B stood out as this weeks game of chess. :) Both players have similar styles preferring to improve the table & leave nothing for the opponent if there is a chance of a missed pot. Aek took game 1 with Bee levelling game 2. Aek played a series of strong pots to take the third and get the Night House a point on the board.
Nai vs Tony was up next and Tony was on top form in a game that, on paper, was a pretty even match-up. Nice combination plays and positioning by both players with Tony emerging the clear victor this time around.
Into the doubles and Gary, Bang's favourite doubles partner ;) were up against Aek & Nai. The Oasis boys won the first game in a brisker than expected encounter. Aek and Nai showed their style in game 2 whilst Gary proved his worth in the second by missing a quarter-table straight black eventually leading to 1-1. In the third, Bang was reliable and generally extremely accurate with his leaves in this season's 1-shot-1-shot doubles format. Gary however focused on perfecting his quarter-table straight black misses....and duly missed another! Bang saved the day this time around giving Oasis the match-up and Match win.
Bee B and Tony played extremely well and the second doubles was over in double-quick time at 2-0.
The Beer Leg ebbed and flowed between the two teams getting to 1-1 before Tony bounced a decent black off the cushion to go in off the Night House's last ball that was obscuring the direct path to the pocket. Great Shot :) 6-1 being the final score.
All in all an amusing night that involved Thai Karaoke, dozens of passing Harley's, some great pool, some highly questionable pool and plenty of beer. :)
Thanks to Nai and his team, Bang, Bee, Tony (welcome back!) and even Gary for the fun night. :D
Oasis Bar will be open from 3pm today.
HAPPY SONGKRAN!
:)
Tuesday League - Game 7 - Home vs Memory Bar
Memory Bar were the visitors to Oasis this week with a familiar line-up. Kwang stepped-in at the last minute for our would-be guest player Ian, who was feeling under the weather.
Kwang was drawn to play first against Peter, a tricky opponent with a penchant for devious snookers. Kwang missed more than her fair share of shots and paid the price as Peter drove home a stunning three quarter table-length banked black shot to win the first game from a difficult position. Game 2 went much the same way giving Memory Bar a 1-0 match lead.
Next up was Wanchai vs Piak which promised to be a fun spectacle. Wanchai took the first game without incident getting the first, of what would be 3, crucial missed-but-potted/snookered-somewhere-else type shots in the match. Piak took the second game after a series of snookers with her typically calm and measured approach.
The third game could have gone either way with both players having opportunities to clear up. Finally Wanchai's third MBP/SSE shot left Piak snookered and ultimately unable to pot and Wanchai won.
Bang vs Sue featured the most white-balls potted during a game (Sue), with the cue ball homing-in on pockets seemingly for fun. Bang took both games although not without hiccups of his own.
The final singles game was Gary vs Apple with Gary bringing home the points to make it 3-1 going into the doubles.
Sue & Apple got a good win against Kwang & Wanchai in a pretty open game that could have gone either way in each of the three games.
Bang & Gary had the tougher doubles match-up but secured the win in the third game to win the match.
Into the Beer Leg then and a relatively quick two wins for Oasis claimed the last point of the night.
Thanks to Apple, Piak, Peter and Sue and the Oasis team for making it an enjoyable evening. Thanks to Kwang for stepping up to fill in at the last minute. :)
Tuesday League - Game 6 - Home vs 'My Bar'.
With Tim's regular team depleted by one, Victor stepped up to the plate.
The draw put Tim against his arch-nemesis Bee B, and in the first game too! Round 1 went to Bee with Tim snatching an error-laden second game and Bee taking the third.
The remaining 3 singles games saw some nice plays and went generally without drama allowing Oasis to grab the 4 points and secure the match win.
Into the doubles and the Bee/Bang partnership prevailed in the first match. Gary & Wanchai lost their first game but pulled back games 2 & 3 to pip Tim & Em. On to the Beer Leg and it was a swift 2-0 victory to finish the evening.
Thanks to the My Bar squad and a special thanks to Tim for his potato salad! Great :)
Sorry, we forgot the team photo this week :o
Tuesday League - Game 5 - Away to Bar With No Name 2
Our third away game in a row and the second at Bar With No Name Karon in two weeks against their other team, one of the most formidable teams in the league, led by Yellow & Kong.
Gary was up first, in the draw he didn't want, vs Kong. The first game was a good one with some decent shots but most noteworthy was Kong's uncharacteristic number of near-misses. Gary scraped a win in the first game that probably should have been won 2 shots earlier. Kong dominated the second game showing his true form. The third game was more like a game of chess. The two players aware that a finish was available to each of them if the 4 locked balls around the black spot could be unlocked. This had to be done carefully. Unfortunately for Kong he accidentally hit the group during another shot opening the game up. Gary took full advantage and potted his final 4 balls and the black to claim an unexpected and very important win.
Our guest player this week, and one we are hoping will turn into a regular, is Wanchai. A snooker player at heart, evident in his tight cue ball control and precise long shots. Drawn against Cliff, a very solid, tactical player, Wanchai played a superb series of shots taking the first game barely missing a beat. The second game was more of a battle but Wanchai won with a very nice black shot.
Next up was Bang vs Brian. Bang missed a couple of early shots but covered some crucial pockets eventually taking the first game. The second game was a quicker affair as Bang made it 2-0.
Yellow vs Bee B was the fourth game and Yellow powered thru taking the first game. Bee B rallied for the second with his usual composed approach. The third was a nail-biter but Bee B grabbed the win to make it 4-0 and a match win.
Next up was doubles and Bang & Bee B partnered in inimitable fashion vs Kong and Cliff taking the game in the process. Gary & Wanchai lost out 2-1 to Brian & Yellow in a game that had the most errors thus far.
On to the Beer Leg and the Oasis team pushed on to a smooth 2-0 win.
All in all a really good night of quality pool with a nice mix of flair and control and a good win for Oasis.
Thanks once again to No Name Bar and their team. Well done to all. :)
Tuesday League - Game 4 - Away vs Bar With No Name 1
This week the Oasis Bar Pool Team were away at one of our favourite places to go for pool matches, Bar With No Name Karon. Always fun and always good competition.
The first game was a highly competitive draw and saw Chaiya winning the first frame. Bee B and Chaiya have contrasting styles, with Bee being guarded and methodical whilst Chaiya is free-flowing and flamboyant. This time around Bee B's approach earned the 2-1 win.
Next up was Grant vs Gary and both players agreed after the game it was an absolutely shocking display of rubbish pool. There were so many missed shots we lost count. On the night Grant was slightly more rubbish than Gary, but there wasn't much in it! ;)
Tony and Ernie, two guest players for No Name proved to be entertaining and highly energetic ( ;) ) players. Tony beat Robert and Ernie lost 2-1 to Bang despite 7-balling him in their first game.
On to the doubles and honours were split between the teams with both match-ups being close games. Bee B & Gary's win secured the Match win with a 2-1 close-run beer leg victory to cap off the night.
Thanks as always to Jace, Chaiya, Grant and the lads for an entertaining night. :)
Special thanks to Robert for filling in at the last minute.
Sunday 17th of March and a fun night at Oasis Bar with Gaby's Birthday and our Single's Knockout Pool Competition in attendance.
Thanks to Simon from Coffee Beans Karon for the super Buffet.
This week Oasis Bar pool team were away at Elephant Bar in Kata, our first of 3 away games in a row. It's historically a tough, good natured game against Gorn and his team at a real Thai-style bar.
The singles results, all 2-0 (which belies the closeness of each of the games) set the match at 2-2 going into the doubles. Oasis managed to clinch the match by winning both doubles and then the beer leg at 2-0 making this a 100% 2-to-nothing series of games with the whole thing over by 22.30!
Thanks to Gorn and the boys for the game and special thanks to Wawa for a great bit of spicy food to finish the evening. 😄
Our second game of the season, and first home game, was an amusing one vs Leo's 1% crew.
The first two games were over pretty quickly; Bee B vs Leo was a slightly longer affair. The game we all wanted to see was Bang vs Slash and it didn't disappoint. End-to-end stuff with both players potting 5-6 balls in a row before missing one shot then losing. The tie-break was a more one-sided game initially with Bang requiring multiple snookers to get himself out of trouble. In the end Slash had a chance to finish them game with an easy short range black....and missed! Bang won. The game was on a knife-edge throughout with some fantastic shots played. Very exciting. :)
Gary & Kwang managed to get a win vs Slash & Leo, an example of how the new 1-shot-1-shot doubles rule levelled the playing field. Bang & Bee won their doubles also. The Beer leg was an even match-up going to the tie-break.
Thanks to Leo, Slash, Som & Bob for making it a fun night.
See you next time. :)
Game 1 of the new Tuesday Night Pool League season was a fun one over at Studio Bar for the Oasis team. Thanks to Tu, Nastia, George & Rutt for an enjoyable evening. Special thanks to Kwang & Pum for filling in at short notice.
Oasis Bar - 8-Ball Pool Phuket Friendship League Champions - Season 5 - Feb 2024
Oasis joined the Kata/Karon Tuesday Pool League back in September 2023 losing our first game to Bar With No Name 2, 6-1. We consoled ourselves with the fact that the one game we did win was the Beer Leg and it was only the Beer Leg Champions title we thought we might have a shot at.
Fast-forward 4 months to January 31st and somehow we had only lost 2 games out of 17. Going into the final game of the season we had already secured the Beer Leg title and were top of the league although only on beer-leg-difference from Bar With No Name 2.
No Name 2 were at Allstars for their last game whilst our must-win final game of the season was against Tim's crew at My Bar.
A nail-biting first 2 singles matches ensued as "Bee B", our most-reliable and consistent player throughout the season, missed more shots in 3 frames than he had in the previous 3 matches combined and lost his singles game to Em 2-1. Em played very well incidentally. Our guest player Shane lost his first game to Tim after an uncharacteristic series of missed pots that left the same ball hovering over the same pocket 3 shots in a row. I had visions of it being "one of those nights". Shane levelled the second game and not for the first or last time that night, I couldn't watch as a black ball shot was being cued up in their tie-break.....it was a pot and a much needed win. Gary and Bang went on to win their singles which meant that going into the doubles round we needed one more win to secure the match. Bee B & Shane won their games vs Martin & Cameron securing Oasis Bar an improbable League Champions title.
Well done and thank you to everyone who played for us You all played an important part of a truly unexpected outcome to our first season.
In order of appearances:
Gary - 18
Bee B - 17
Big Dave - 12
Bang - 11
Ging - 2
Lenny - 2
Ying - 2
Pat - 2
Tony - 1
Shane - 1
Cowboy John - 1
Cliff - 1
Alek - 1
Ying's birthday on Saturday 2nd March from 7pm. All are welcome. :)
It's July 2023. The roof of Oasis needed some serious remedial work, but the driving force with regards to priority was to get a pool table in the Oasis Bar. To do that we needed to extend the coverage. The two month journey started there...
