Urgent Update Needed: Critical RCE Vulnerability Found in liblzma and xz (Versions 5.6.0 & 5.6.1)

A critical security issue has been identified in liblzma and xz versions 5.6.0 and 5.6.1. This vulnerability, known as CVE-2024-3094, could allow attackers to remotely execute malicious code on affected systems (Remote Code Ex*****on - RCE).

What is xz?
xz is a general purpose data compression format present in nearly every Linux distribution, both community projects and commercial product distributions. Essentially, it helps compress (and then decompress) large file formats into smaller, more manageable sizes for sharing via file transfers.

What does this mean for you?
If you're using liblzma or xz versions 5.6.0 or 5.6.1, your system could be vulnerable to attacks. A successful attack could allow attackers to:

Take control of your system
Steal sensitive data
Install malware
Gain access to other devices on your network

How to fix it:
The good news is there's a straightforward solution! Simply update liblzma and xz to version 5.6.2 or later. Here's how to check your current version and update:

Open a terminal window.
Type the following command and press Enter:
xz --version
This will display your current xz version.
If your version is 5.6.0 or 5.6.1, follow your system's instructions to update liblzma and xz to version 5.6.2 or later.


How urgent is this update?
This vulnerability is rated as critical (CVSS v3 score: 10) due to the potential severity of an attack. We strongly recommend updating immediately to ensure your system is protected.

Current investigation indicates that the packages are only present in Fedora 41 and Fedora Rawhide within the Red Hat community ecosystem. No versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) are affected.

Delivering exceptional user experiences requires more than just great applications—you also need a deployment environment optimized for performance, scalability and reliability. Included with RHEL, new features in Podman 4.9 simplify management and increase resilience of your container environment.
The multi-arch build farm feature lets you dispatch builds to Podman hosts on different platforms, easing multiarchitecture container builds. You can also combine multiple command line options in a single, reusable module to simplify management of complex sets of flags.
With Heredoc syntax, you can now include short scripts and files inside Containerfiles, while the Podman REST API lets you view more detailed progress information. With SQLite as the default database for new installations, you can improve the resilience of your container environments, particularly when abnormal terminations occur.
