The BICTFest this year will be held at the Jim Thompson Art Center from August 1-11, 2024. The festival features programs P4, P6, and W7. Among these, P6 presents "KHANOM STORY: DETECTIVE OF BAAN KRUA" by Cherry Theatre. This engaging experience invites children to become detectives in Baan Krua, uncovering historical secrets and investigating the mysterious disappearance of Jim Thompson, the Thai silk king.

In recent years, the question of the provenance of objects from colonial contexts and debates on restitution have become an integral part of museum discussions in Germany, and more recently also in Switzerland. The long presence of post- and decolonial critique and the increasing demands for restitution play an important role in this, as does the growing awareness amongst the museums themselves that the collections scattered throughout Europe emanate an urgency that will not simply disappear.
In his talk, Friedrich von Bose will give a short overview of these developments and ask about their relevance for curatorial approaches as much as for programmes and research. With specific examples from his own curatorial practice, he will discuss what the tasks and challenges for museums are to take a stance publicly, and what this can mean for a contemporary museum ethics.

In his short speech during the opening of The disoriented garden… A breath of dream at the Jim Thompson Art Center, artist Trương Công Tùng said, ‘This moment, here, where we all gather, sharing a breath is very unique to me. I am here thanks to a single breath, of me, of you, of my ancestors, of all beings who exist alongside and within us.’ The Latin root anima, which translates into soul or psyche, initially signifies a breath, the first and last sign of life. Through our individual and collective breathing, we participate in the process of becoming: each breath reminds us of our shared mortality, our metamorphosis, and our desire for a primordial interconnectedness. Drawing from the title of Tùng's first solo exhibition in Thailand, this screening program attempts to unpack the previously mentioned notions through the ethereal medium of moving image. From the watery breathlessness that besets both a fleeing mother and a struggling dancer, the silent breathing of ghosts and creatures that gestures toward their presence and absence, and a farmer’s dream of rice spirits during his battle against cancer, these filmic works weave a dreamscape that contemplates our current state of being, invokes our longing for unnamable things, and questions our sense of belonging to other humans and nonhumans.

A fragment gestures.
An essential incompletion that signifies something is in the
process of formation.

As you walk through this garden, tread carefully. Observe
not only with your eyes, but also your ears, your skin,
your sixth sense. Rising from the ground are indefinite
shapes of organisms, painted with layers of lacquer,
containing the mountainous air and the water of nameless
rivers within their hollow vessels. Listen to their faint
murmur—a whisper of seeds curling inside the soil's plastic
veins―as these shapes hum their hymn about a homeland
that is now lost. What is present and absent here among
these structures?

Peek through the pinhole of the coffin. Which eyes are
staring back at you? Which eyes are you seeing with? What
memories can you see flashing across their oculars before
they become eternally embalmed for scientific sakes?
Can you feel the highland spirits conjured through these
susurrating fragments?

Finding/reconnecting to our home in nature

นิทรรศการเดี่ยวของ เจือง กง ตุง ชื่อ “The disoriented garden… A breath of dream” ที่จัดแสดง ณ หอศิลป์บ้านจิม ทอมป์สัน นำเสนอมุมมองว่าด้วยประเด็นปัญหาต่างๆ ที่ซับซ้อนที่เกิดขึ้นในพื้นที่เซ็นทรัลไฮแลนด์ (แคว้นที่ราบสูงตอนกลาง) ประเทศเวียดนาม ผลงานของเขามีตั้งแต่งานการจัดวางที่ประกอบร่างสร้างจากวัตถุสิ่งของทางธรรมชาติและสิ่งประดิษฐ์ ไปจนถึงงานศิลปะวิดีโอที่ผสมผสานทั้งภาพและเสียงจากบ้านเกิดของเขาในจังหวัดซาไล เจือง กง ตุง ใช้สื่อหลากหลายรูปแบบเพื่อนำเสนอเรื่องราวเกี่ยวผลกระทบทางระบบนิเวศและประเด็นทางสังคมที่ไม่มีการพูดถึงเป็นวงกว้าง การเยี่ยมชมนิทรรศการของ เจือง กง ตุง ยังมีความละม้ายคล้ายคลึงการเดินทอดน่องลัดเลาะไปตามสวนลึกลับมหัศจรรย์อันเต็มเปี่ยมด้วยบรรยากาศราวกับตกอยู่ในภวังค์ ที่พร้อมให้ผู้เข้าชมนิทรรศการได้ปลดเปลื้องสติสัมปชัญญะชั่วขณะ พลางปลดปล่อยให้ประสาทสัมผัสนำทางความรู้สึกของตน ทั้งแสงแห่งดวงวิญญาณที่เคลื่อนไหวบนจอภาพ เสียงน้ำสั่นสะท้อนบางเบา ไปจนถึงกลิ่นดิน และเมล็ดพืชพันธุ์ สวนแห่งนี้พร้อมรับรองผู้มาเยือนที่ต้องการสำรวจรับมุมมองที่แตกต่างอย่างเปิดกว้าง

Han Nefkens Foundation

Newly established in 2023, the Han Nefkens Foundation – Southeast Asian Video Art Production Grant, in collaboration with Sàn Art, Vietnam; Sa Sa Art Projects, Cambodia; the Jim Thompson Art Center, Thailand; Museion, Italy; Busan Museum of Art, South Korea and Prameya Art Foundation, India aims to be a tool for increasing contemporary artistic production in the video art field and is directed at artists living in Southeast Asia. The Grant involves the production of a video artwork. In order to consolidate the candidates’ career, the Grant appraises artists living in that region who have established a solid trajectory but haven't yet had the opportunity to exhibit their work extensively. The production grant should serve as an important source of support and boost in the artist's career. The recipient of the Grant receives $15,000 for the production of a new work, which will be presented at partner institutions in Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Italy, South Korea and India.

Han Nefkens Foundation
The Han Nefkens Foundation is a private, non-profit organization set up in Barcelona in 2009 by Dutch writer and patron, Han Nefkens. It focuses on the production of video art, with the aim of connecting people through art across the world, collaborating with renowned international art institutions. The Foundation's founding values have defined it from the beginning as an innovative and forward-thinking model: a production hub that oversees and promotes contemporary creation from the very first moments until the final presentation. Positioned as a platform for video artists to advance their careers, its main activity is to commission new works through its awards and grants on an international level. The unique way in which the foundation operates allows for artists not only to produce new work but also to have that work shown at numerous art institutions world-wide.

โครงการทุนสนับสนุนการผลิตศิลปะวิดีโอแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ของมูลนิธิฮาน เนฟเกนส์ ภายใต้ความร่วมมือกับ ซอง อาร์ต ประเทศเวียดนาม โครงการศิลปะซาซา ประเทศกัมพูชา หอศิลป์บ้านจิม ทอมป์สัน ประเทศไทย มิวเซียน ประเทศอิตาลี พิพิธภัณฑ์ศิลปะปูซาน เกาหลีใต้ และมูลนิธิศิลปะปราเมยา ประเทศอินเดีย ก่อตั้งขึ้นใหม่เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2566 มุ่งหมายที่จะเป็นเครื่องมือในการเพิ่มพูนการผลิตผลงานศิลปะร่วมสมัยด้านศิลปะวิดีโอ และมุ่งให้การสนับสนุนศิลปินที่อาศัยอยู่ในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ โครงการฯ จึงเน้นให้การสนับสนุนด้านการผลิตผลงานศิลปะวิดีโอเป็นหลัก เพื่อเป็นการเสริมสร้างอาชีพของศิลปินที่สมัครรับทุน โครงการฯ จะพิจารณามอบทุนให้ศิลปินที่อาศัยอยู่ในภูมิภาคแห่งนี้ที่มีเส้นทางสายอาชีพที่มั่นคงแต่ทว่ายังไม่มีโอกาสได้จัดแสดงผลงานอย่างกว้างขวาง โดยทุนการผลิตจะทำหน้าที่เป็นทรัพยากรสำคัญในการสนับสนุนและส่งเสริมอาชีพของศิลปิน โดยศิลปินที่ได้รับทุนจะได้รับเงินจำนวน 15,000 ดอลลาร์สหรัฐฯ เพื่อใช้ในการผลิตผลงานใหม่ พร้อมกับนำเสนอผลงานดังกล่าว ณ สถาบันพันธมิตรทั้งในเวียดนาม ไทย กัมพูชา อิตาลี เกาหลีใต้ และอินเดีย

Born in 1986, Truong Cong Tung grew up in Dak Lak among various ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands, Vietnam. He graduated from the Ho Chi Minh Fine Arts University in 2010, majoring in lacquer painting. With research interests in science, cosmology, philosophy and the environment, Truong Cong Tung works with a range of media, including video, installation, painting and found objects, which reflect personal contemplations on the cultural and geopolitical shifts of modernization, as embodied in the morphing ecology, belief or mythology of a land. He is also a member of Art Labor (founded in 2012), a collective working between visual art and social/life sciences to produce alternative non-formal knowledge via artistic and cultural activities in various public contexts and locales.
Truong Cong Tung has exhibited extensively in Vietnam and abroad as a solo artist and as part of Art Labor Collective. เจือง กง ตุง เกิดเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2529 โดยเขาอาศัยและเติบโตที่เมืองดักลัก ซึ่งมีชนกลุ่มน้อยอาศัยอยู่จำนวนมาก โดยเมืองแห่งนี้ตั้งอยู่ในพื้นที่เซ็นทรัลไฮแลนด์ (แคว้นที่ราบสูงตอนกลาง) ของเวียดนาม เขาสำเร็จการศึกษาจากมหาวิทยาลัยวิจิตรศิลป์แห่งโฮจิมินห์ เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2553 สาขาวิชาเอกด้านการวาดภาพลงรัก ด้วยสนใจในด้านการค้นคว้าวิจัยเกี่ยวกับวิทยาศาสตร์ จักรวาลวิทยา ปรัชญา และสิ่งแวดล้อม การนำเสนอผลงานของ เจือง กอง ตุง จึงประกอบด้วยสื่อที่หลากหลาย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นสื่อวิดีโอ ศิลปะจัดวาง ภาพวาด และวัตถุที่เขาค้นพบ ซึ่งสะท้อนถึงมุมมองที่เขามีต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางวัฒนธรรมและภูมิศาสตร์การเมืองแห่งยุคสมัยใหม่ที่ส่งผลต่อระบบนิเวศ ความเชื่อ หรือตำนานเกี่ยวกับผืนแผ่นดินของผู้คน นอกจากนี้ เขายังเป็นสมาชิกของ Art Labor (ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2555) ซึ่งเป็นกลุ่มที่ทำงานด้านทัศนศิลป์ และสังคมศาสตร์/วิทยาศาสตร์ที่เกี่ยวกับชีวิต เพื่อร่วมกันผลิตความรู้ทางเลือกเชิงนอกระบบของความเป็นทางการผ่านกิจกรรมทางศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมในบริบทพื้นที่สาธารณะและสถานที่ต่างๆ ในท้องถิ่น
