Burma Study Center students and teachers recently celebrated the conclusion of our first term of 2024 with a great dinner party in Chiang Mai!

The celebration featured performances by students from all classes -- including a video presentation, songs, and speeches from both teachers and students -- followed by a ceremony to distribute certificates and special awards. We also enjoyed a wonderful buffet dinner of Northern Thai food, catered by our friends at So Good Thai Restaurant !

One aspect that fills us with pride is our students’ outstanding performance on standardized English exams. From the pre-tests students completed at the beginning of the term in February to the post-tests in late June, our students improved their scores by nearly 25% on average, with several students achieving more than 40% improvement in a single term! These impressive results are a testament to the hard work and dedication our students demonstrated throughout the term.

We would like to extend our appreciation to Sri Ping Muang Municipal School for graciously allowing us to use their spacious meeting room for our graduation party. The evening was a well-organized and enjoyable event for all students, teachers, and special guests.

In today’s world, critical thinking and logical reasoning skills for the younger generation are crucial. In order to be able to analyze and talk about these thinking abilities from a rational point of view, debate plays an important role. It's not wrong to say that debate culture is a hobby-based game that has been alive among Myanmar's youth for generations.

Hereby, we would like to introduce the debate format that will be introduced and practiced during the upcoming "Youth Debate Camp in Chiang Mai". At the Youth Debate Camp, 'British Parliament Debate' will be taught and utilized.

What is British Parliamentary Debate?
British Parliamentary debating is a game that asks four teams of two people to argue about a topic which they have had fifteen minutes to prepare for, in front of one or more judges who will decide who has won.

What can we learn?
You will be able to initiate good practice that will help you overcome your anxiety and fear of public speaking in front of audiences.

For those who already have experience with public speaking, you will improve your ability to analyze arguments, probe them for weak points, point out inconsistencies, and string together logical analyses. These skills will serve you well in nearly any kind of life or career.

Why should you attend?
The above-mentioned benefits will be realized during the three-day debate camp which will be valuable for Myanmar youth in Chiang Mai.

Youth Debate Camp in Chiang Mai


A special program for Myanmar youth is coming soon to Chiang Mai! Participants will meet face-to-face to learn debate theory and practice techniques for debating competitions on the ground.

The momentum of youth workshops and in-person activities has been limited since the outbreak of Covid-19. Since then, young people have had to adapt to new styles of teaching and learning. Although our youth suffered the military coup in 2021, their desire for learning has never been greater. This time, their knowledge gained from online trainings can be put to practical use at the Youth Debate Camp (YDC).

Youth Debate Camp (YDC) is a free, three-day training based on the British Parliamentary Debate style. When it comes to face-to-face practice and speaking, the emotions and physical appearance of speakers are much more apparent and significant than in virtual competitions.

Youths who complete the YDC will be able to:
· Comprehend the fundamental ideas and techniques of debate.
· Enhance critical thinking, logical argumentation, rhetorical, and research skills.
· Apply the British Parliamentary Debate format in live debate competitions.
· Recognize the potential of debate culture to impact societies and countries.

This is an excellent opportunity for those who would like to actively debate and discuss current affairs in Myanmar!

With Thingyan and Songkran upon us, the past few weeks have been a busy and exciting time for all of us!

Burma Study Center was a proud sponsor of The Mask fundraising singing contest held on Sunday 7 April and organized by the Do One Thing team to support internally displaced communities in Myanmar. In addition to contributing to the cause, three students and one teacher also actively participated in the competition by showcasing their talents on stage.

The event was a resounding success, raising a total of 51,164 baht—much more than the original fundraising goal—which will be used to supply drinking water and other necessities to multiple communities in Karenni State during the current hot season.

We are very proud to announce that Beam, one of our full-time teachers, emerged as the winner of the contest. Performing “Rockabye” by Clean Bandit, a complex song with both sung and rapped sections, Beam’s vocal abilities thoroughly impressed the judges and audience members. Our BSC Level 2 student Sai San Myat (Joseph) also won the award for most popular performance with his cover of Justin Bieber’s “Ghost”.

On the same weekend, three of our students were selected to participate in BEAM Education Foundation’s 8th annual Youth Conference on Social Entrepreneurship in Chiang Mai. The conference aimed to teach ‘design-thinking’ and empower young migrant leaders to collaborate on designing projects to assist struggling communities along the Thai-Myanmar border.

On the last day of the conference, BSC Level 2 student Schola Nyo and her fellow team members from Karenni State earned recognition for their innovative sustainable agriculture project proposal for implementation in Karenni IDP camps. Schola’s team’s proposal was selected as being one of the two most promising and viable, and she and her team members were jointly awarded a grant of 30,000 baht (as well as ongoing mentorship) to kickstart their project over the next year.

Schola’s winning initiative will focus on purchasing mustard seeds and encouraging Karenni IDP farmers to cultivate and harvest mustard leaves for the production of dried and preserved leaves to sell to local markets throughout Karenni State. We extend our congratulations to Schola and her team for their outstanding creativity and active involvement in the conference!

Burma Study Center is proud to join Do One Thing for a unique community initiative addressing the ongoing conflict in Myanmar. The Mask Singing Contest will unite diverse communities, foster talent, and raise funds to support IDP schools in Myanmar's Karenni (Kayah) State.

The location is Rx Cafe Chiang Mai and admission to the outdoors event is free for all! Children are welcome, so bring the whole family! Vote for your favorite performers and contribute to the education of vulnerable youth in Myanmar's conflict zones.

In addition to having 3 talented BSC students (and 1 very talented teacher 😄) perform in the singing competition, BSC will also host a booth as part of the Myanmar Food Court and Crafts during the event. BSC students will be offering freshly-prepared, classic Shan foods such as Shan meatballs, Shan noodles with tomato-pork sauce, and fried tofu. Nine other local businesses and organizations will be offering special food, drinks, and crafts from Myanmar for sale as well.

Burma Study Center was transformed into 'Ristorante Italiano di BSC' last Friday evening with students and teachers enjoying a wonderful Italian dinner together!

Prior the big dinner, Level 3 students were tasked with doing short research projects and presentations on topics relating to Italian food, such as olive oil, herbs, pepperoni and salami, lasagna, tiramisu, and various types of pasta sauces. We also watched a documentary about authentic Italian cuisine and food culture.

In the late afternoon, a group of students started preparing the ingredients -- chopping tomatoes, crushing garlic, shaving parmesan cheese, and more. A few hours later, the entire meal was ready to be served: Italian salad, garlic bread, fusilli with mushroom Alfredo sauce, and spaghetti with bolognese sauce!

Student Nam Nueng explained, "In Asia, we like to eat a lot of spicy and salty food. Italian food is more bland and creamy, but also delicious. I really enjoyed helping to cook and eating everything!"

Zin Min Htun, another student, stated, "This was my first time to eat Italian food. I was really happy to join this activity. It was very delicious pasta."

Saying goodbye to the cool season, BSC students and teachers recently enjoyed a sunny Sunday outside in nature!

Our first adventure was a hike up Doi Suthep mountain to visit Wat Pah Lat, an ancient forest monastery, on the occasion of the Buddhist holiday of Makha Bucha. Next, we trekked up the very steep trail to a second temple, Wat Anagami, where we were able to relax with some refreshments.

Finally, it was time to hike back down the mountain. We continued on to Huay Kaew Arboretum, where we enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by เหม๊าะขนาด - So good Thai restaurant. After lunch, the fun continued with a scavenger hunt organized by Teacher Beam and several other fun games.

Burma Study Center's Term 1 of 2024 got off to a great start yesterday with afternoon & evening orientation sessions for all of our 59 new students. Today is the first day of regular classes and we look forward to welcoming back 68 continuing students for a grand total of 127 students this term!

BSC has added an extra afternoon class for students in Chiang Mai wanting to study *basic* English. This class is only for students with very low levels of English and will meet every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1:30-3 pm. The class will last 10 weeks (5 February–12 April 2024) and the fee is only 500 baht per student.

Burma Study Center (BSC) is happy to announce that we will soon be accepting new students for our on-site English program in Chiang Mai. Our upcoming five-month term will start on 5 February 2024 with options for afternoon (1:30-3 pm) or evening (6-8 pm) classes, Monday to Friday, from Beginner to Advanced levels.

To apply, prospective students should come to BSC on 23 or 24 January between 2-7 pm (no appointment necessary). During the application process, applicants will have the opportunity to meet our teachers for a brief interview. Additionally, their current English level will be assessed on the same day to determine their appropriate class for the upcoming term.

Students must be 16 years of age or older. Students are asked to pay a deposit of 1,000 baht during the first week of the term. This deposit will be partially refunded to students who successfully complete the five-month term with an attendance rate of 90%+.

📣📣 The Spring Revolution Football Tournament is only 2 days away!! ⚽️⚽️

Please join Burma Study Center and Chiang Mai Football League for this fun community event to support and raise much needed funds for CDM schools in Myanmar! We hope to see you there!

The location is the Suthep Municipality Stadium in Chiang Mai and entrance is free! The event is this Saturday and Sunday 11-12 November from 8 am - 7 pm. BSC cheerleaders will be performing as part of the opening ceremony and the BSC football team will be playing matches on Saturday at 12 noon and 4 pm.

Our multi-ethnic team has started practicing for Chiang Mai Football League's upcoming Spring Revolution Cup Tournament. The tournament is aiming to raise a minimum of 45,000 baht to support CDM schools and teachers inside Myanmar.

We are looking forward to competing against all of the other 11 teams in the tournament on 11-12 November at the Suthep Municipality Stadium, and hope you will be cheering for our team!

Everyone is invited to attend the Spring Revolution tournament, which will be raising funds to support CDM schools and teachers in Karen and Mon areas of Myanmar. The tournament is taking place 11-12 November 2023 at Suthep Municipality Stadium in Chiang Mai. In addition to the football matches, there will also be fun activities and food available.

For the first time ever, BSC has organized a multi-ethnic football team with 16 students and 2 teachers! Our team will go up against other teams in the tournament. To support our BSC team, other students are preparing a cheerleading performance during the opening ceremony.
