Kanlaya Thailand

Kanlaya Thailand

Kanlaya's is possibly the finest private house west of Chiang Mai. It took us three years to build in a spectacular setting.

Set high in the mountainous sub-tropical rainforest with wrap-around views, its eco chic personified. Perched atop a magnificent garden that falls away through rocky palisades to the river below, there is an opulent honeymoon suite, a water-riven courtyard, a charming Sala and a second guest suite and wrap around balconies with views to the Burmese Border

Kanlaya’s delicious Lucky Nuts! 🌰🌿

These exquisite gems not only captivate the eyes but also tantalise the taste buds!

Join us as we share some lovely snaps of these luscious nuts that have been flourishing in Kanlaya’s garden for a remarkable 10 years!

Enveloped in a luxurious red velvet, these Lucky Nuts showcase their aesthetic appeal but also promise a taste that surpassses even the finest chestnuts!

The best way to enjoy these culinary treasures is to simmer them slowly for an hour then carefully remove the inner membrane which will unveil an ultra-delicious kernel! Mmmm delicious! 🌰

Having made our beds (literally), we now get to sleep in them! 🛏️ 🌿

Since Kanlaya’s is all about sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint, we commissioned a local carpenter to make our Teak furnishings that you’ll see throughout our luxurious camp.

All the furniture was hand-crafted to the highest quality from raw teak lumber, using traditional methods, over a period of 18 months, which included our stunning doors, shutters and six beds.

We simply adore these stunning handcrafted furnishings that adorn our space - all adding to an unforgettable and luxurious experience at Kanlaya’s.

Exciting news!!

Hovering 100ft vertically above the ‘River Lang’ sits our brand NEW, beautifully crafted ‘Garden View Point’! Doesn’t it look just fabulous?

We hope you all enjoy the view from up here - it is by far the best seat in the house! ⛰️

Let us know what you think?

Photos from Kanlaya Thailand's post 19/05/2023

At Kanlaya’s the jungle starts literally at the bottom of the garden. That makes us the perfect starting point to trek the rivers, mountains, villages, forests, temples and caves in the region. There are easy river walks you can follow alone but for the jungle an experienced official guide is required ⛰️

Depending on your stamina, fitness and wishes there is a wide range of more or less challenging routes which all pass through the mountains, with soaring views to distant peaks, through verdant jungle, alongside teeming rivers and with traditional Hill Tribe villages en route.

The routes can be tough and demanding, with big vertical ascents, or gentler and even all down-hill, taking in a variety of features and settlements however after all that walking we can take you a packed lunch wrapped in a banana leaf, arrange for you to eat in a village house or for a slightly more authentic dining experience we can prepare you a 'Karen Hunters Lunch' prepared in green giant fresh-cut bamboo tubes over an open fire beside the river which is teeming with fish! 🐠

Thatching Mae Hong Son style is all about using the leaves of ‘Dipetrocarp’ trees found in the subtropical rainforest which covers over 80% of the Mae Hong Son Province using traditional eco-friendly techniques!

The Province is incredibly famous for harvesting these wonderful leaves, which are skillfully woven by our tribal women, onto large thatching panels held together by a delicate one-meter-long bamboo frame and are still used for thatching tribal and rural houses in many parts of Mae Hong Son Province today! They are super eco-friendly and can withstand weathering for up to three to four years - just impressive!

The ‘Diptrerocarp’ trees are drought adapted and shed their leaves in March and April at the end of the dry season when the ground water runs out and just before the monsoon rains return in May.

The large leaves, which are collected in the forest by tribal women, are really only flexible for three days after falling - a really short harvesting period! They are insect-resistant and waterproof!

This method of using traditional building techniques and using eco-friendly and sustainable building materials has seen an increase in exports nationwide to climate conscious builders and DIY enthusiasts. An absolute success story of how embracing sustainability can be beneficial for both the environment and the economy.

At Kalaya’s we make use of these wonderful leaves on our chicken shed and garage but especially on our fantastic “Thatched Sala” which hovers just over 100 feet vertically above the river!

Isn't nature just wonderful!

What our wonderful guests are saying about us...💚

"10. The BEST authentic northern Thailand experience"

This is going to be a long review, but if you are considering staying here and want a real, local Thai experience, keep reading. This place is NOT touristy and we were among a small handful of foreigners in the area during our stay.

We stayed at KE for 3 days and it was one of my favorite destinations of the month long trip to SE Asia. Gail, Phillip, and Pen (Gail’s sister) are wonderfully warm and accommodating people who made our stay so special and unique. Gail (Kanlaya) gave us the most amazing tour of the area over several days. We drank local coffee which was grown nearby, with beans still warm from the day’s roasting, hand ground in front of us and prepared in the local fashion.

We expressed interest in exploring caves and Gail took us all over and joined us as we navigated the sometimes treacherous caves. They provided us with local guides for the caves, one which included being chest deep in an underground river! Aside from hanging out with Gail (who I wished was my new best friend) we opted to have dinner at the property for two nights. And OMG, the food was unreal. very authentic northern Thai cuisine, made by Gail and her sister, Pen.

The property itself has been carefully designed by the hosts, integrating the local geology and plants into the architecture. Phillip is an absolute thrill to chat with. He’s very knowledgeable on the culture and geology of the area and we enjoyed many lively fireside conversations in the evenings.

Our room was decorated and designed with intense attention to detail. Wonderful views. Great birdwatching opportunities.
Do not miss this opportunity! I cannot express this enough. Wonderful in every way.

Thanks again for hosting us and showing us the magical beauty of Northern Thailand "

Thank you SO much for your kind words!! 💚

The River Lang rises on the Burmese Border and runs around Kanlaya’s on its way to famous Thum Lod Cave. a mile downstream. On the opposite bank the Jungle starts. And in the river, Blue Dace, River Carp and the odd big black Catfish. But best to eat are shoals of little pink crayfish. We make a white wine sauce with the heads and shells, with lemon grass, galangal, Kafir lemon and garlic, chilli of course, this is Thailand, and enjoy with homemade pasta.
