Elephant Care Camp at Siray, Phuket
was established after the COVID-19 situation. It was created with the goal of gathering aging elephants, those that have been overworked, and those no longer desired because they can no longer be used for work. The camp aims to provide these elephants with a life that is as close to what it should be, following the realities of domesticated elephants, a tradition that has been part of Thai culture for a long time.
In the past, hundreds of years ago, Thais used elephants for warfare, as transportation, and for hauling. Over time, we have gradually adapted these uses to fit the changing eras, leading to the current situation. However, due to environmental changes, Thailand's forests have gradually diminished. Most of the elephants we see in camps today were born into human families, generation after generation. These elephants cannot return to the wild to live on their own. There is not enough space for them to forage or breed, and they are at risk of being harmed for encroaching on farmland. Therefore, elephant caregivers have become crucial in looking after and caring for these elephants.
At our camp, we strive to raise awareness and provide understanding to everyone, whether Thai or foreign, about the heritage of elephant care, the importance of understanding, loving, and communicating with elephants, and how the relationship between humans and elephants is both beautiful and profound.
Taking care of elephants requires more than just providing them with an area that resembles their natural habitat. Their diet, clean drinking water, nighttime shelter, and the opportunity to bathe and cool down are all important aspects of their care. Elephants need food equivalent to 20-30% of their body weight, or about 200-300 kilograms per day. Our camp takes on the responsibility of preparing this food and conducting regular health check-ups to ensure that the elephants remain healthy and can stay with us for a long time.
We may not be the largest, most perfect, or best elephant camp in Thailand, but we try our best with a genuine love for elephants.

Sinoon and Gobier (elephant care takers)
Sinoon, also known as Nuan or Granny Nuan, is an elderly blind elephant with clear blindness in one eye on the left side and cataracts on the right side. She is nearly 60 years old and is a heritage elephant under Thailand's legal protection. She came with a companion named Neua Thong. Previously, Gobier's father assigned him to care for both elephants, and he is relieved that his elephant no longer has to work hard.
Sinoon used to work as a timber elephant in the forest before coming to live with us. However, due to her advanced age and declining health, she can no longer continue working.
Nuan is an introverted elephant who prefers solitude. She doesn't socialize much, not even with her companion Neua Thong, who is quite different in temperament. Nuan enjoys quiet times when there are no visitors, often standing in the sun, gazing at the sea view. In the evenings, she retreats to the mountain forest and usually comes down in the morning to prepare to meet people. Sometimes, Nuan likes to sneak away from her resting spot and play hide and seek with the mahouts, hiding behind trees or crossing to other sides, which always excites us when we hear that Nuan has gone traveling again.
Since coming to us, Sinoon has become very calm and serene. Sometimes, we even joke that she's as still as a rock, but in reality, she's just content and relaxed, showing no signs of aggressive behavior.
The only thing that Sinoon is wary of and dislikes the most is engines. While most elephants are afraid of vehicles, Nuan doesn't like them at all. She perks up her ears and points her trunk whenever she hears a vehicle approaching. For safety reasons, whenever there are cars in the elephant sanctuary, we ask them to park below.
We may not have the best, most beautiful, or largest elephant sanctuary, but we all strive to understand the behavior and personality of each elephant to care for and understand them to the best of our ability.
Grandma Dara and the elephant caretakers, Ex and Uncle Nuk
Grandma Dara is the oldest elephant in our sanctuary, aged 73 years. She used to be a logging elephant in the forest, but now she's retired and has been with us since our sanctuary opened. She belongs to Uncle Nuk, who shares caretaking duties with his grandson, Ex.
Initially, when we first met Grandma Dara, we were concerned because she is very old and has a somewhat stern personality. She isn't fond of young elephants, and we wondered if she could live with us and adapt to our environment. However, contrary to our expectations, Grandma Dara's long experience as a logging elephant has made her quite strong. She excels in activities like forest walks and hill climbs, and she is the most skilled walker among our elephants. Importantly, she listens to customers and everyone else "except" the caretakers 🥴.
During activities, Ex tries to call her and instruct her to walk or stop, but Grandma Dara never listens to him. However, when customers call "Dara, come," Grandma Dara obediently stands still, lets herself be groomed beautifully, and behaves perfectly.
Grandma Dara loves beauty and adorning herself. She enjoys being decorated with items like pineapple leaves, and sometimes Ex puts flowers on her, which she loves so much that she leaves them on until we replace them or they fall off.
Due to her advanced age and impaired hearing and vision, caretakers have to use a lot of energy and voice to look after her. In the sanctuary community, Grandma Dara is like the head honcho. She refuses to eat unpeeled sugarcane or chilled watermelon. If water doesn't come from a natural source and has a chlorine or citrus smell, she won't drink it. Perhaps it's because she no longer has teeth; she chooses her food carefully. Despite being an old elephant, she won't eat unfamiliar items like apples or carrots; she sticks to what she knows. We try our best to take care of Grandma Dara and keep her with us for as long as possible.
After finish activity, Grandma Dara sometimes goes into the forest, but occasionally she plays with the children below. She loves human children but dislikes baby elephants, which we don't quite understand. Perhaps it's because the human children often come to feed her, give her water, and help take care of the elephants, which Grandma Dara appreciates very much.
We don't know how long we'll be able to take care of Grandma Dara, but we want to stay with her for a long time. Grandma Dara is adorable, and we accidentally fell in love with this old elephant without even realizing it.
We hope Grandma Dara can stay with us until she's 80-90 years old. We adore her!
P.S. When Uncle Nuk and Grandma Dara are together, be careful not to tease them about their age, as both the caretaker and the elephant are sensitive about it. Today, Grandma and Uncle showcased their strength by lifting a broken branch from the storm path for us to admire, without any orders or coercion. Sometimes Grandma Dara might want to convey to us, "These tiny humans can't even lift a branch like this, and they're wasting my strength."
With love to Grandma Dara.
Yaya and her father, Mr. Deng (also known as Elephant Caretaker), have been living at our elephant sanctuary since it opened around August 2023. Mr. Deng shared that they met Yaya, or Khun Kaew in Thai, during the COVID-19 period at another elephant camp in central Thailand. Yaya was small and thin, not drawing much attention amidst the many elephants there. She used to nod her head constantly, thinking it would lead to getting food.
Currently, our sanctuary and caretakers are gradually adjusting Yaya's behavior. They are now placing food in designated spots for her to eat whenever she wants. Mr. Deng deeply loves Yaya, calling her "child" every time. He pays close attention to her food, cleanliness, both her body and living area, and ensures she doesn't climb or disturb others.
Besides helping elephants, our sanctuary also supports the caretakers by providing them with livelihoods and allowing them to be with their beloved elephants. This reflects the genuine relationships between people and elephants in Thailand, not just what is portrayed in the media.
These elephants are born and live with people all the time, unable to find food naturally due to the diminishing forests in Thailand. It is crucial that we do not leave them in fear, both humans and elephants. Therefore, many places, including Siray Elephant Camp, try their best to help and care for these elephants to the best of their ability.
We would like everyone to open their hearts and experience elephant care with the purpose of providing elephants and their caretakers with a better life, living closely to nature, and being able to live together sustainably and happily. Also, we want everyone to learn and understand about Thai elephants and elephants in Thailand.
The way of life of Thai people with elephants and our happiness, caregivers
