Exhibition Title: “Unrolled”
“Unrolled” explores how time, space, and memory unfold and reshape our perceptions, connections, and experiences. Through scrolls, copper-wire installations, photography, and sculpture, the exhibition reflects on personal transformation and the interplay between universal elements and Turkish culture.
At the center of the exhibition are two large scrolls of transparent paper. “Unrolled Together”, created with my daughter, invites viewers to interact by unrolling sections to reveal layers of color and narrative, symbolizing shared experiences and evolving memories. “Unrolled”, the second scroll, offers a more solitary reflection on how our personal perceptions deepen over time.
Complementing the scrolls is “Do You Feel the Warmth”, an installation made from hand-braided copper wire, interwoven with photographs from Istanbul, Antalya, Pamukkale, and Cappadocia, alongside familiar objects such as plastic water bottles, cezves (Turkish coffee pots), and handmade Turkish lamps created with my daughter. Copper, a conductor of warmth and energy, symbolizes the connections between people, places, and memories, bridging the universal and the personal.
The exhibition also includes “Have We Met?”, a series of 77 street cat portraits. Revered in Turkish culture for their resilience, these cats serve as metaphors for adaptation, survival, and our evolving relationships with place and memory. They challenge viewers to consider if we have crossed paths before, offering a fresh perspective on connection.
“Unrolled” invites viewers to reflect on how distance and time shape the stories we carry, finding warmth and meaning in the process of unrolling and reconstructing our memories.
Oppertunity for artists from middle east.

Welcome our new artist in residence Emmanuel Moysan:
Aarp (electronic music / FR)
Is a history / geography teacher and a musician. His work focuses on sonic textures, space and pastiching a wide variety of musical genres. his residency in our space will be an occasion to immerse himself in a new environment with enough time to explore new sonic possibilities through Max/Msp and PureData.
artehreistanbul will offer him a good setting within its network of sound artists to expand his creativity and collaboration.
Welcome our new resident Jay Lee, Describing her practice she says :
My work is evolving towards integrating local materials and narratives into my installations, aiming to create pieces that resonate with the specific cultural and environmental context of their creation. This ongoing exploration seeks to deepen the dialogue between the self and the surrounding world, challenging the conventional boundaries of home and identity.
At Arthereistanbul, I will explore the multifaceted concept of home through the lens of cultural heritage, migration, and personal memory, incorporating traditional Turkish crafts and materials. I aim to create a visual and tactile exploration of belonging, examining how the spaces we inhabit and the narratives we carry shape our understanding of home. It will be more special as it will involve participation of my teenage daughter who's shaping her own identity and serendipitous encounters I will meet in Istanbul.

Whispers of the Urban Snails
An exhibition by Katharina Briksi at Arthereistanbul
June 27, 2024 - June 30, 2024
Opening hours: 12:00 - 20:00
Closing reception: June 30th, 6:00 PM
featuring snacks and drinks
I rush to the ferry terminal in Karaköy to catch the boat. The streets are busy and noisy. Nevertheless, at my next step, I notice a crackling sound and feel something break beneath my weight. I am startled - did I just crush a snail?
This sensation immediately brings back childhood memories: running through the rain-soaked lawn and streets, accidentally stepping on a snail due to childish recklessness and poor coordination, the sound of the snail shell shattering. But here, amidst the crowd, I glance under my shoe and see that I have merely stepped on a piece of cat food, or maybe a chocolate biscuit? I feel caught off guard and am surprised to realize that even in this gigantic city, my upbringing catches up with me.
Katharina Briksi is currently exploring the sounds and moods of Istanbul. At times, noises from the urban space evoke memories of other places. Situations and moods in Istanbul can be compared to those in rural areas, such as the artists hometown, a village in Austria. Katharina seeks to mimic this phenomenon by creating installations and objects that imitate such a soundscape. These "Sound Souvenirs" are an attempt to approach or capture a mood and make it reproducible. Visitors are invited to participate in this attempt.

Each artist created their own perceptual sound collage based on their experience on a triangular Kadıköy pedestrian island. Material, representation, and methods were determined by each artist, while the duration and compositional rules were set by the group as a whole. The artists value the possibility of experiencing these works together simultaneously. The installation at Arthere is situated somewhere between individual experiences, a collective sounding, and a single installation.
