Sprawled out over 39 districts, İstanbul has been called ‘The City of Seven Hills ’ because the oldest part of the city is supposedly built on seven hills, each of which bears a historic mosque . As it was, the historic areas of the city were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. The natural beauty of the city, an exciting scene, its blend of modernity and history all combine to make İstanbul a distinct meeting place for international congresses and meetings. As Napoleon Bonaparte was once quoted as saying ‚ “If the world was a single country, İstanbul would be its capital.” Due to the city’s huge size, topography and maritime influences, İstanbul exhibits a multitude of distinct microclimates , so do remember to bring your umbrella.
It is a metropolis proud of its rich heritage of being the capital of four empires (Roman, Byzantine, Latin and Ottoman) throughout its 8500-year past. Moreover, İstanbul was proud to be a joint 2010 European Capital of Culture, an honor which brought about many collateral developments and improvements in the city’s cultural life and hospitality industry. It is also looking forward to becoming the European Capital for Sports in 2012. Apart from being the largest city and former political capital of the country, İstanbul has always been the center of Turkey’s economic life because of its location as a crossroads of international land and sea trade routes . İstanbul is also Turkey’s largest industrial center. It employs approximately 20% of Turkey’s industrial labor and contributes 38% of its industrial workspace.
