Please join us on May 17th for a concert of music by Jashiin, a Russian composer currently based in Istanbul and enrolled in MİAM’s master’s program in composition.
The centerpiece of the concert is Interior/Exterior Pieces (2019–21), a seven-movement work for solo piano which explores the concept of rhythms and textures as musical symbols. This will be followed by two chamber pieces: Symmetrical Sigils (2016/24), a work of semi-controlled improvisation which translates concepts from Chinese and Persian calligraphy into music, and Cansu (2022/24), a miniature exploration of musical symbolism. The last piece of the concert, Twin Flames (2024), is an electroacoustic work composed especially for this event.
Jashiin is a composer of notated and electronic music whose work encompasses a wide variety of styles and media, from through-composed modern counterpoint to free and semi-controlled improvisation. His recent work includes Meltem, a commission sponsored by Harvard University, and Bitterness Is Best Declined as a Companion, an album of electronic music realized using field recordings made in Istanbul and Balıkesir.
17 May 2024, 16:00, İlhan Usmanbaş Hall.
On May 9th, join us for a workshop and a performance by İpek Eğinli. She will be talking about electroacoustic improvisation on piano and modular synth; extended techniques, graphic score and noise. After the workshop she will play a solo concert in İlhan Usmanbaş Hall.
Ipek Eginli is a Turkish-American experimental sound artist and improviser who describes her music-making as “a process of a creation and a creation of a process.” Her ever-evolving creative process involves electroacoustic free improvisation on piano, voice, modular synthesizers, and no-input mixing boards. Eginli’s work is often described as adventurous, daring, playful, and vibrant. Watching her perform, one can witness a dynamic sonic exploration, effortlessly shifting between organic and mechanical sounds while evoking a range of emotions, from tender and soft to dark and explosive. She explores the convergence of acoustic and electronic sounds, blurring and, at times, overemphasizing the lines between the two to create surprising sonic illusions and interactions.
09 May 2024, 14:00, İlhan Usmanbaş Hall.
On May 10th, join us for a concert and workshop led by Brett Sroka and Jashiin. They will perform One Linden Tree, Then Another…, a new multi-movement work for synthesizer, field recordings, and live Max processing. This will be followed by an extensive tour of the custom-made Max setup used in the piece, and a Q&A regarding the use of Max (and electronic instruments in general) in live improvisation.
Brett Sroka is a composer and interdisciplinary artist traversing the spheres of contemporary music, art and technology. His work has been presented at The New Museum in New York City, Manifesta 12 Palermo, Italy, Roulette in Brooklyn, NY. In 2015-2021 he initiated the performance program at Levy Gorvy Gallery in New York City, curating aesthetic dialogues between the performing and visual arts for their regular series of exhibition events. In 2023 Sroka’s video installation, Endless Song, was exhibited at the Galway Arts Centre and the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Ireland.
