AMBA BOODANSINGH TUMBLES TO SUCCESS

The Sideline exists for highlighting the exploits of athletes who excel in lesser reported sporting activity, events and achievements, mainly with team sports. Over the weekend, something significant flew under the sporting radar, which in any corner of the globe would be considered a feel-good story at worst.

Last weekend, ten clubs from Trinidad, Tobago, Barbados and Jamaica competed as at a gymnastic meet at the Woodbrook Youth Facility hosted by local club Tots & Tumblers Gymnastics Club as part of observing their 25th anniversary of existence. One competitor from the host club excelled so much that gymnastics in Trinidad & Tobago may have a realistic bright future.

Ten-year old Amba Suri Boodansingh, the youngest gymnast to compete on Friday between Levels 5 and 10, won three of her events and finished second on her fourth event. She scored a 9.7 to win the bars, scored 9.2 on the vault to finish ahead of all other competitors and in the floor exercise, she finished with a 9.2 to take the gold.

Her only sub-nine score came on the balance beam, where she scored a 8.3 to place second.

The Montross Government primary school student is the daughter of former Endeavor Sports cricketer, Sunil Boodansingh, who has also been a mainstay on the windball cricket circuit for over 20 years.

Amba beat out competition from her own club as well as other young gymnasts from Tobago Gold Star Gymnastics, the Olympia Wolf Pack, Gymnastics Explorers, Champions Gymnastics, Lee Gymnastics Club, Flip Gym (Barbados) and the Jamaica School of Gymnastics.

The Sideline will like to wish young Amba all the best in her future endeavors to the point where her story will be too big for us to report on but big that the world begins to take notice.
