Grant of Letters of Administration
A document that authorizes an individual to handle the assets of someone who dies without creating a will.
It is a type of grant of representation issued to the closest surviving relative or next of kin of the deceased when there is no will.
It is also granted in cases where the appointed executor of a will is unable to fulfill the role.
In the event of someone dying without a will, an Attorney at law/ legal professional should be consulted to ensure applicability for the filing of this type of application at the Probate Registry.
In order to effectively safeguard the assets of the deceased when there is no will present, a grant of letters of administration is useful.
Failure to obtain a grant of letters of administration for cases that qualify can result in the property/ assets of the deceased being acquired by the State or persons unintended by the deceased.

Grant of representation - Probate
A grant of representation can take many forms. Where a will is involved, the grant of representation required is a Grant of Probate.
This document confirms the identity of the executor of a person’s will and that person’s right to deal with the assets of the Deceased as outlined in the will.
Probate applications are made when an original will is available and it is used to pronounce that a will is valid and authentic by formal application to the Probate Registry prepared by an Attorney at Law.
