Weekend Result:

Trinidad Northern RFC 10 - Caribs RFC 5

It's always a hard fought game when two of the top clubs in the country meet up for battle.

Caribs were able to convert an early chance when Northerns were forced to ground the ball in their try zone, resulting in a 5m scrum that would lead to the first and only score for the game for the guys in red and white.

Once again the Blue and White needed that wake up call and got the momentum flowing, playing all the rugby in Caribs half. Due to both sides uncharacteristically giving away multiple penalties at the breakdown, particularly in the attacking third of the pitch, coupled with and missed penalties, the first half ended 5-0 to Caribs.

Northerns carried the momentum into the second half and continued to push further and further, deep into Caribs territory. The boys kept the pressure up but failed to capitalize due to a lack of ex*****on, all the while conceding one too many penalties in the opposing 22 to keep the game close. Eventually, the Mighty Northerns broke through the stingy Caribs defense and the ball was well used by the quick and agile backline to allow centre Ronald 'Dixie' Mayers to score on the far left corner of the field. A superb conversion by Sebastian Navarro put Trinidad Northern up 7-5. Both teams' failed to get a handle through set pieces, with numerous penalties at the breakdown keeping game close. Finally, Caribs gave away a crucial penalty that Sebastian Navarro was able to easily slot through for a vital 3 points, securing a 10-5 lead for Northerns.

In true fashion, the rest of the game was back and forth with Caribs looking for that next score, but the men from St. Ann's were not to be denied their victory. It simply was not meant to be as Caribs were kept at bay by the solid defense, with each player standing up when counted on. A well deserved win for the Mighty Northerns! 🏆

Next on the agenda: Harvard Rugby on 28th July, with thr winner taking pole position in the Trinidad and Tobago Rugby League - Championship Division.
