A speech language pathologist can help your child understand, talk, read, and write. SLPs work with children on social skills too. They also work with children who don’t talk at all. An SLP may help your child understand and use words. Your child may learn to:
ask and answer questions;
ask for help;
take turns in a conversation;
start or stop a conversation.
At CKFTO we offer a 50 min individualized secession. For information call 628-3268 or email [email protected].

Is your child off medication during the vacation break?
If so, you may want to restart it a week or two before school begins. Ask your doctor and, while you are there, discuss whether medication changes are needed given puberty or increased demands at school.

For children with Sensory Processing Disorder, a dentist visit may cause anxiety, here are a few Suggestions from our therapists for Reducing Sensitivity during Dental Visits:
• Have the child wear the X-ray vest during the entire appointment to provide extra weight and deep pressure.
• Have the parent do oral deep pressure or vibration in the form of electric toothbrush, mini massager, or rubbing with toothette prior to appointment.
• Have the child eat something very chewy prior to the appointment.
• Allow the child to have a fidget toy that provides “heavy work” during the session.
• Have the child wear a heavy or tight hat before and during the appointment.
• Verbally warn the child before each thing you do.

At CKFTO, Occupational Therapy begins with an evaluation from a licensed therapist. The in person evaluation normally takes an hour to complete. Once the evaluation is complete, the therapist will prepare a summary report that includes the findings and recommendations. This report determines the frequency of appointments and the goals for ongoing therapy sessions.

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) may be the reason for walking on tip-toes. If your child is oversensitive to touch, they may be avoiding placing their heels down to avoid uncomfortable textures. These children will also show aversion to 🧦 👟 or 🦶🏿 Message us for more information.

Does your child respond to the texture, appearance, and smells of foods in an unusual manner (he or she looks revolted, gags, or cries when encouraged to take a bite). This may be a sensory-related food issue and can be overcome with the help of a pediatric occupational therapist. Visit www.ckfto.org or message to book a consultation.

Experts have found that over 80% of children with autism also have sensory processing disorder.

Sensory Processing Red Flags 🚩

1. Over-responsive to sensory input:
Expresses discomfort in response to loud sounds or bright lights
Aversive to light touch, teeth brushing, hair grooming, or clothing textures
Hesitant to climb and use moving playground equipment (swings, bikes)
Gags in response to certain smells or food textures

2. Under-responsive to sensory input:
Constantly “on the move”
Does not appear to register sensory stimuli, such as being touched or bumped
Craves frequent or intense sensory experiences (climbing, jumping, crashing)

3. Motor Skill Challenges
Appears clumsy
A limited repertoire of play activities
Difficulty letting peers “take the lead” in play
Avoids novel play activities or environments

4. Self-Regulation Challenges
Easily distracted by visual stimuli or background sounds
Becomes overwhelmed, has meltdowns, or avoids multi-sensory environments, such as birthday parties, public events, or the classroom
Has difficulty transitioning between environments or activities

Does My Child Need a Psych Educational Assessment?

The goal of the assessment is to evaluate a child’s cognitive ability and academic skills. The child’s behaviors, and socio-emotional functioning are also assessed.

The evaluation is used to determine if the child requires special education services, and to develop recommendations to help the child learn and function in school.

For bookings email our Educational Psychologist at [email protected] or call 628-3268

For many children with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) or anxiety figuring out how to calm their bodies and emotions can be a difficult task.
One successful technique for calming is to provide deep pressure by giving a massage, hugs and squeezes, or a good roll-up in a blanket.
