My name is Formiga of Capoeira Camara T&T, I have been training capoeira for the past ten
years under the supervision of my local instructor Azulao Manganga and our Mestre from Olinda Brazil, Mestre Bola. I have taken part in capoeira events locally and internationally in Brazil. My knowledge stems from the guidance of my Instructor and Mestre of our school also other Capoeira Masters who thought me in Brazil and those who came to Trinidad and Tobago. Capoeira is my passion and one of my gifts to the world. Capoeira is for everyone a beautiful primal form of martial art which incorporates, fight, self-defense, music, history, acrobatics, dance, language and culture. My gift to my students is to share this art form which builds self-discipline, confidence, self-efficacy, the art of balance, flexibility, harmony with oneself and community.
Capoeira is an Afro- Brazilian martial art created over 500 years ago by enslaved Africans in Brazil, it encompasses fight, dance, acrobatics, music, and holistic Brazilian culture. This art form was used as a form of self -defense to free themselves from the plantations in which they were forced to work as slaves. The birth place of Capoeira was in Africa, but it evolved in Brazil. During slavery the enslaved Africans were not allowed to congregate to practice this art form as plantation owners feared revolts. As a result, they hid the aggression and brutal attacks in the form of dance as to persuade their oppressors that Capoeira is a not a form of martial art.
In the plantations the enslaved Africans were kept in slave camp known as a “senzala”. After several years of fighting the enslaved Africans defeated their oppressors and fled to the mountains where they created a fort known as a “Quilombo”. This fort is known as Quilombo dos Palmares, in which they lived and was undefeated for over 100 years until the abolition of slavery in Brazil.
