G-Aider did you Know that 2024 is a leap year??😌

This year, there won’t be 365 days as normal, there will be 366. With the extra day tacked on to the end of our shortest month: February. That’s right, 2024 is a leap year.

1. Leap years are all because of the sun
It takes 365 ¼ days for the earth to rotate around the sun. But the calendar year is 365 days. So, to synchronize the calendar year with the solar year, we add an extra day every four years. If we didn't have leap years, our calendar would gradually fall out of line with the seasons.

2. Every 100 years, we skip a leap year. (Almost.)
OK, so we’ve said it takes 365 ¼ days for the earth to rotate around the sun but, in actual fact, it takes 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds. Eventually even this small discrepancy would knock our calendar off course. So, leap years occur every four years, but every 100 years we skip a leap year – unless the year is divisible by 400. Confused? For example, the years 1700, 1800, and 1900 are not leap years, but the years 1600 and 2000 are.

3. It’s called a “leap” year because it’s all about leaping ahead
We use the phrase leap year because each date on the calendar jumps ahead two days of the week instead of one. If your birthday fell on a Sunday last year, this year it will leap over Monday and land on a Tuesday. So, no Monday birthday this time around. Lucky you!

4. Non leap years have a name too
A year that is not a leap year is called a common year. Because it’s, well, more common.

5. Leap years were the brainchild of Julius Caesar
Across time, humans have had to come up with strategies to keep their calendar in line with the seasons. Some cultures got around the problem by throwing in an extra month or week when the need arose. It was the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar who, in 46 B.C., had the canny idea of adding an extra day every fourth year.

G-Care 101 🥰🥰🥰 How to make a Retirement Budget Con't

Calculate Fixed Versus Flexible Costs
Now that you've gathered all your expected costs, calculate how much is fixed and how much is flexible:

Total all your fixed expenses
Total all your other, non-fixed expenses separately
Divide your fixed expenses into your total expenses
What percentage of your retirement income will go toward fixed expenses? Does this align with your thoughts in step three on how you want to spend your time in retirement? If you have large monthly obligations for house and car payments, for example, maybe a lifestyle change is in order.

As a general rule of thumb, if you want more fun in retirement, find ways to lower your fixed expenses so you can have more flexible funds available to spend on the interests you most enjoy.

How to Put an Elderly Loved One on a Budget 19/01/2024

G-Care Budgeting 101 🥰 Con't

Tips for Budgeting for Seniors
If your aging loved one is open to using new strategies to reduce their expenses and make their money go further, try implementing some of the following tips.

1. Create a Monthly Expense Worksheet
The first step most financial planners recommend is filling out an expense worksheet that includes all monthly income and expenses. This will provide you with a good handle on your loved one’s expenditures and help you identify which areas, if any, need to be pared back. If there is a deficit in monthly income, the ensuing suggestions can help minimize the discrepancy.

2. Reduce Utility Costs
Contact your loved one’s utility companies to see if they offer a monthly budget-billing plan, which keeps their bill the same amount every month. Instead of paying higher monthly bills during certain times of year due to increased energy usage for heating or cooling, the cost is spread more evenly over 12 months. Predictable expenses make it easier to follow a set budget that does not fluctuate throughout the year.

3. Choose Insurance Premium Payment Plans Wisely
Insurance premiums can be paid on a variety of installment plans, such as monthly, quarterly or semi-annually. Depending on your loved one’s cash flow, paying premiums in installments might be more feasible than making one large payment for the year. However, some insurance companies offer discounts for customers who pay in full. Paying annual premiums for auto insurance, health insurance, homeowners insurance and life insurance involves large outlays up front, but this is often the least expensive option.

4. Research Senior Discounts
There are multiple ways to help older adults save money, just as there are for anyone else, but this is one time that aging individuals have the advantage. Older adults can enjoy a “senior discount” at many businesses, particularly restaurants, retailers and hotels. Anyone who is eligible and doesn’t use this discount is literally leaving money on the table. While the savings on a single transaction usually aren’t tremendous, they will accumulate over time when applied consistently. You and your loved one can search for lists of senior discounts online, but it never hurts to ask a business if they currently offer deals or would consider introducing some.

5. Control Credit Card Debt
If mounting credit card debt is an issue, it may help your loved one to rely on cash or a debit card instead. This way they have a finite amount of money at their disposal to hopefully keep spending in check. With a debit card, the connected account can be replenished every month, but the senior must keep track of their balance to avoid overdrafts and fees. This is just one of several beneficial credit card strategies for retirees.

6. Look for Telecommunications Bundles
Telecom companies usually offer cable, internet, home security, and home and/or cellular phone services in bundles or packages that are cheaper than paying for each service individually. Inquire about package deals, senior discounts and introductory offers to minimize costs. Just be sure to avoid bundles that include services your loved one doesn’t want or need and unreasonably long contract terms.

7. Create a Financial System
Making a budget doesn’t do much good if your loved one doesn’t follow it and monitor their progress. Some seniors simply aren’t good at restricting their spending or paying bills on time. Others aren’t interested in goal setting or seeing how much money they were able to save from month to month. If your loved one is of sound mind but isn’t keen on taking a hands-on approach to their own financial situation, then it may be time to offer some help.

Is Budgeting Important for Seniors?

Yes, budgeting is important for older adults, especially if they are no longer working and on a fixed income. It can help them manage their finances better and avoid financial difficulties.

How to Put an Elderly Loved One on a Budget 19/01/2024

G-Care 101 😍- Budgeting For Seniors

For adult children, talking to aging parents about money can be a challenge. At the heart of the issue is the fact that we didn’t perform the years of hard work needed to earn these funds. Who are we to suggest or dictate how their money should be saved or spent?

Broaching this topic is often uncomfortable at first, but your approach can make or break the conversation.

Avoid being critical or condescending and emphasize the fact that you have their best interests at heart.

The goal is to foster trust, open communication and teamwork, but even the most respectful attempts at discussing finances can result in a parent feeling like the victim of a hostile takeover.

At the end of the day, if a resistant elder is still of sound mind and has not fallen victim to undue influence or financial elder abuse, then they have every right to manage their money however they want.

This can be a frustrating thing to accept, but a family caregiver’s only recourse is to gently encourage smarter financial decisions and carefully monitor the situation from afar.

After a bad diabetes day...

It is so easy for a bad diabetes day to take over. It can set us back and make us feel like we aren't doing a good job. Instead of focusing on this, try these things instead

G Care 101 Diabetes 😍😍

Diabetes dont’s are foods that should be limited and they are:

1. Processed/refined carbs – these foods are stripped of almost all fiber, vitamins and minerals and can be considered empty calories. These are high GI foods that cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels.

2. Processed meats – can increase cholesterol and weight which can be harmful for diabetics.

3. High GI fruits – can increase blood glucose quickly making it difficult to control.
Canned foods with added sodium or sugar.

4. Pre-Packaged, frozen and fast foods – often contain hidden sugars, salt and preservatives which you should be wary of.

5. Unhealthy fats – are trans fats that are bad for the waistline and heart especially for diabetics.

6. Low-fat products – tend to replace fat with sugar.

7. Salty – can raise blood pressure in diabetics putting them more at risk for heart disease

8. Sweetened beverages – can create imbalances in a person’s insulin levels.
Alcohol – should be had in moderation.

Diet is the cornerstone when it comes to managing blood sugars, which is why it’s important to know what foods diabetics can eat freely and which ones they cannot. By having a diabetic friendly food list on hand, you will not only understand what constitutes a diabetic diet but it will also help you stay on track.

G Care 101 Diabetes 😍😍Diabetes do’s and don’t’s

Diabetes do’s will always be whole foods. What does that mean? It means you should be eating foods like:

Vegetables – are filled with fiber, protein and nutrients which helps to nourish the body, maintain blood sugar and keep you full. Non-starchy vegetables in particular are great for diabetics because they are low in carbohydrates keeping blood glucose under control.

Fruits – even though fruits contain carbohydrates diabetics can still have them, they just need to be counted as a part of your meal plan. It’s best to choose fruits that are fresh, frozen or canned without added sugars.

Unsalted Nuts and seeds – should be included in a diabetic diet because they contain magnesium and high levels of beneficial fats. These healthy fats help to both improve glycemic control and help diabetics reduce the risk of heart disease.

Whole grains – are foods with good sources of fiber which can help slow the absorption of glucose in the blood.

Beans – are packed with protein and fiber which have been shown to lower blood glucose levels in diabetics.

Lentils – are complex carbs meaning they are high in fiber and digest slowly. They help not only control blood glucose levels but also appetite.

Fermented foods- are rich in fiber which can stabilize blood glucose and help in weight loss. One study in particular showed these foods to reduce fasting blood glucose, postprandial blood glucose, glucose intolerance and insulin resistance.

Eggs – have a low GI score, great for your waistline and are high in protein which is why it can be included in a diabetic diet. However, it’s important to eat in moderation as it can affect cholesterol which is something to be mindful of since diabetes is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Avocados- have many diabetes benefits including low in carbohydrates, high in fiber, may help with weight loss and improve insulin sensitivity.

Organic, grass fed animal-protein – are loaded with complete protein, rich in vitamins and minerals, and contain healthy omega-3 fatty acids all things good for a diabetic diet.

Herbs and Spices – are great to add to your dishes for flavor, satiety and a whole host of benefits. Particularly for diabetics, they bioactive compounds found in many culinary herbs and spices showed reduced blood glucose and fat.

G Care 101 Diabetes 😍😍Diabetes in children

Children can get both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Managing blood sugar is especially important in young people because diabetes can damage important organs such as the heart and kidneys.

Type 1 diabetes
The autoimmune form of diabetes often starts in childhood. One of the main symptoms is increased urination. Kids with type 1 diabetes may start wetting the bed after they’ve been toilet trained.

Extreme thirst, fatigue, and hunger are also signs of the condition. It’s important that children with type 1 diabetes get treatment right away. The condition can cause high blood sugar, dehydration, and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), which can be medical emergencies.

Type 2 diabetes
Type 1 diabetes used to be called juvenile diabetes because type 2 was so rare in children. Now that more children are overweight or obesity, type 2 diabetes is becoming more common in this age group.

Some children living with type 2 diabetes don’t experience symptoms. Others may experience:

1.Increased thirst
2.Frequent urination
3.Extreme fatigue
4.Blurry vision
Type 2 diabetes is often diagnosed based on medical history, a physical exam, and bloodwork.

Untreated type 2 diabetes can cause lifelong complications, including heart disease, kidney disease, and blindness. Healthy eating and exercise can help your child manage their blood sugar and prevent these problems.

Type 2 diabetes is more prevalent than ever in young people.

Learn how to spot the signs so you can report them to your child’s doctor.

28/11/2023

G Care 101 Diabetes 😍😍Diabetes prevention

Type 1 and type 1.5 diabetes are not preventable because they are caused by an issue with the immune system. Some causes of type 2 diabetes, such as your genes or age, aren’t under your control either.

Yet many other diabetes risk factors are manageable. Most diabetes prevention strategies involve making simple adjustments to your diet and fitness routine.

1. Eat Healthily
2. Be physically active
3. Avoid excessive weight gain
4. Check blood glucose
5. Follow Medical Advice

27/11/2023

G Care 101 Diabetes 😍😍Symptoms of Diabetes

If you have any of the following diabetes symptoms, see your doctor about getting your blood sugar tested:

1. Urinate (p*e) a lot, often at night
2, Are very thirsty
3. Lose weight without trying
4. Are very hungry
5. Have blurry vision
6. Have numb or tingling hands or feet
7. Feel very tired
8. Have very dry skin
9. Have sores that heal slowly
10. Have more infections than usual

26/11/2023

G Care 101 Diabetes 😍😍What Causes Type 2 Diabetes?

Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas that acts like a key to let blood sugar into the cells in your body for use as energy. If you have type 2 diabetes, cells don’t respond normally to insulin; this is called insulin resistance.

Your pancreas makes more insulin to try to get cells to respond. Eventually your pancreas can’t keep up, and your blood sugar rises, setting the stage for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. High blood sugar is damaging to the body and can cause other serious health problems, such as heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease.

Causes of Type 2 Diabetes
1. High Blood Pressure
2. Pancreatic Diseases
3. Obesity
4. Age
5. Genetic Predisposition
6. Stress
7. Sedentary Lifestyle
8. Unhealthy Food
9. Medicine

G Care 101 Diabetes 😍😍Symptoms and Risk Factors of Type 1 Diabetes

It can take months or years before symptoms of type 1 diabetes are noticed. Type 1 diabetes symptoms can develop in just a few weeks or months. Once symptoms appear, they can be severe.

Some type 1 diabetes symptoms are similar to symptoms of other health conditions. Don’t guess! If you think you could have type 1 diabetes, see your doctor to get your blood sugar tested. Untreated diabetes can lead to very serious—even fatal—health problems.

Risk factors for type 1 diabetes are not as clear as for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. However, studies show that family history plays a part. Know your status...

24/11/2023

G Care 101 Diabetes 😍😍What Causes Type 1 Diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes -the general view is that this type is caused by an autoimmune reaction (the body attacks itself by mistake). This reaction destroys the cells in the pancreas that make insulin, called beta cells. This process can go on for months or years before any symptoms appear.

Some people have certain genes (traits passed on from parent to child) that make them more likely to develop type 1 diabetes. However, many of them won’t go on to have type 1 diabetes even if they have the genes. A trigger in the environment, such as a virus, may also play a part in developing type 1 diabetes. Diet and lifestyle habits don’t cause type 1 diabetes.

23/11/2023

G Care 101 Diabetes 😍😍Types of Diabetes

There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes (diabetes while pregnant).

Type 1 Diabetes - is thought to be caused by an autoimmune reaction (the body attacks itself by mistake😳). This reaction stops your body from making insulin. Type 1 diabetes can be diagnosed at any age, and symptoms often develop quickly.

Type 2 Diabetes
With type 2 diabetes, your body doesn’t use insulin well and can’t keep blood sugar at normal levels. It develops over many years and is usually diagnosed in adults. You may not notice any symptoms, so it’s important to get your blood sugar tested if you’re at risk.

Gestational Diabetes - develops in pregnant women who have never had diabetes. If you have gestational diabetes, your baby could be at higher risk for health problems. Gestational diabetes usually goes away after your baby is born. However, it increases your risk for type 2 diabetes later in life. Your baby is more likely to have obesity as a child or teen and develop type 2 diabetes later in life.

So be aware, it is your responsibility for a safer and healthier you...
