We are excited to share our recent experience with the "Corporate Sustainability and Financial Strategy" course, led by Professor Yenn-Ru Chen from May 20th to May 24th, 2024. This course delved into the crucial aspects of sustainable management—a topic that has become indispensable in today's business landscape.
One of the highlights of this course was our visit to Janman Precision on May 21st. Janman, a Taiwanese manufacturer specializing in small custom components and custom tooling for the medical industry, showcased their commitment to quality, speed, and precision. Their technical teams consistently innovate to enhance their customers' supply chains and products, reflecting their dedication to organic growth and customer satisfaction.
During our visit, we observed Janman's extensive range of services, which includes products in the energy, medical, machining, and custom mold-making fields. This versatility allows them to cater to various industries effectively. We were particularly impressed by their precision grinding operations and the high level of skill and strict quality controls maintained by their workforce.
Janman also stands out for its commitment to sustainability, utilizing solar-generated electricity to power their operations. This visit was an eye-opening experience that provided us with valuable insights into how sustainable practices can be integrated into corporate strategies effectively.
We are grateful to Professor Yenn-Ru Chen and the IMBA office for organizing this insightful visit and for continuously providing us with opportunities to learn from industry leaders. This course has significantly enriched our understanding of corporate sustainability and financial strategy, preparing us to make a positive impact in our future careers.
The speech on Asset Management delivered by Paul You, a prominent figure in the financial sector, covers a comprehensive range of topics central to asset management. Delivered on May 27, the speech began with an introduction to asset management, defining it as the management of various financial instruments, including stocks, bonds, derivatives, private equity, and real assets. It emphasized the fiduciary responsibility of asset managers to act in the best interests of their clients.
Paul You explained the sources of revenue for asset management firms, which include management fees, commissions, and performance fees, and discusses the different business and operational aspects of asset management, such as operational planning, fund accounting, HR, IT, and regulatory compliance. He highlighted the importance of the three lines of defense model for risk management, which includes internal audit, risk management, and regulatory compliance, ensuring a robust governance structure.
The speech delved into the regulatory environment, particularly focusing on Taiwan, where the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) oversees the industry. Paul You discussed the various regulations governing the sector and the importance of self-disciplinary procedures and operational guidelines.
Key trends in the asset management industry were identified, including the growing popularity of Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs), the increasing significance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors, and the rise of alternative investments like private equity funds and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs). The speech also covered the impact of macroeconomic factors on investment strategies, the process of securities selection, portfolio construction, and the importance of monitoring financial indicators to mitigate investment risks.
Paul You concluded with a global perspective, noting the growth in global Assets Under Management (AUM) and the shift towards passive management. He emphasized the need for innovation, regulatory adaptation, and international collaboration to stay competitive in the evolving financial landscape. The speech provided strategic recommendations for asset management firms to navigate future challenges and capitalize on emerging opportunities. At last, there were many student raising great questions, and then Paul You elaborated on the topics thoroughly. The speech ended with wonderful communication.
The Financial Management course, taught by Professor Jason Tsai, serves as an introductory exploration into corporate finance tailored for MBA students. The course delves into both the theoretical underpinnings and practical applications of corporate finance. This dual approach ensures that students gain a solid conceptual framework while also engaging in real-world financial analysis.
The course covered topics including fundamental concepts such as time value of money, risk and return, and market efficiency. Also, the professor introduces some financial strategies with bond, stock, and options. Furthermore, when it comes to investment analysis and capital budgeting, students learn evaluating criteria such as NPV, IRR ,CAPM, and so on.
A unique aspect of this course is its emphasis on collaborative learning through mini-cases. Students are organized into groups of 6-7 members, tasked with completing seven detailed financial analyses over the semester. Each group must present one of their analyses to the entire class, fostering a collaborative and competitive learning environment. These presentations are complemented by written reports, which include both qualitative analyses and detailed numerical computations.
To support student learning and provide additional guidance, weekly TA sessions are conducted by Felix. These sessions are designed to reinforce the material covered in lectures and offer a platform for students to discuss their assignments and clarify doubts. With in-depth understanding of corporate finance, TA helps students to clarify concepts and practice end-of-chapter exercises. In addition to the core curriculum and TA support, the course features guest speaker sessions, which provide invaluable insights from industry professionals.
Professor Tsai’s Financial Management course is a rigorous and comprehensive learning experience that blends theoretical knowledge with practical application. The inclusion of mini-cases, TA session, and guest speaker sessions ensures that students are well-prepared for the complexities of corporate finance. This multifaceted approach not only enhances their academic understanding but also equips them with the practical skills and professional connections needed for successful careers in finance.
