Soph. Arizona 'Round Ball'

In Assam, it is popularly known as ‘Kapou Phool’ (কপৌ ফুল, Rhynchostylis retusa, Foxtail Orchid), and is an integral part of a Bihu dancer's attire. It is an exotic blooming orchid (once in a year, March-April), has a long bunch (cylindrical inflorescence, 15-18 inch) consisting of more than 100 pink-spotted white flowers. It is the festival period for people of Assam, time to celebrate Rongali or Bohag Bihu. Among the youths, this orchid is regarded as symbol of love and therefore the most sought-after flower that each and every female Bihu dancer would love to have around their ballet-buns (Assamese-Khupa). It’s the state flower of Assam, India.

Quoting Hurst, C.C., 1909. Inheritance of albinism in orchids., Gardener
Chronicles (3) 45:81-82:

Hurst proposed a two gene model (R and C). In order to have pigmented flowers, both the R and C enzyme were required. If either the R or C enzyme was absent, then the flowers were white. An R- C- genotype resulted purple flowers; while, an R- cc or rr C- genotype resulted in white flowers. It was possible for two plants to have the same phenotype (white flowers) but different genotypes (R- cc or rr CC).

Since this is a selfing of an alba, with either R- cc or rr C- genotype, thus it is logically impossible to produce colored progeny.

Ken Avant from his breeding experience using 'Max Snow Lover' said: only yellow and white progenies are produced from resulting crosses, thus prevailing last possibility is: Phal. lueddemanniana f. alba (ochracea) 'Max Snow Lover' is not an albescent individual, but resulting from seedpods mixed-up during harvesting (considering it takes 7-10 months or more for seedpods to mature).

continuing about why we collect more species rather than hybrids:

as explained in previous post, we can only create hybrids from species but not vice versa, meaning the supply of species orchids will logically be less than hybrids, provided our limited resources our growing space, our limited time growing them, dwindling virgin primary forests where they originally come from, thus its makes more sense to just focus on species rather than hybrids...

Main reason why we Ten Shin Gardens tend to collect & provide species orchids more than hybrids? It's because we can create hybrids with species but not otherwise. Only mother nature able to create species...(picture is Phal. lueddemanniana 'Mabuhay #3' from Mindanao)

Agitest CymMV+ORSV virus test kits were used to be 4000 NTD for 100 strips in Sept 2019, now is 6500 NTD for 50 strips in Jan 2024. We are afraid we have add these CymMV+ORSV virus-testing costs ($5 US Dollar each test) for any virus testing requests in the future.
