Elimu Community Light

Mkutano Mkuu wa Mwaka wa TEN/MET ulitawaliwa na majadiliano ya kina kwa ajili ya mustakabali bora zaidi wa mtandao, na kwa muhtasari yafuatayo ndio yalijojiri; Mkutano Mkuu wa 17 wa Mwaka ulianza kwa sala iliyofuatiwa na hotuba ya ufunguzi ya Mwenyekiti wa Bodi iliyoweka mwelekeo wa siku hiyo, ikifuatiwa na hotuba kutoka kwa mwanachama ambaye alitoa mwanga kuhusu thamani ya TEN/MET k**a mtandao na hasa kuangazia namna sauti ya umoja ambayo wanachama wanazipata. Mratibu wa Kitaifa alisoma Notisi ya Mkutano Mkuu k**a ilivyoelekezwa katika katiba ya TEN/MET. Baadaye ulifuata uchaguzi wa Mwenyekiti wa Mkutano Mkuu uliokuwa na ushindani mkubwa na kufanikisha kumpata Mwenyekiti wa Mkutano Mkuu huu. Baadaye, Mratibu wa Kitaifa alisoma kumbukumbu za Mkutano Mkuu uliopita kabla ya kuwasilisha ripoti ya utekelezaji wa Sekretarieti ya mwaka kwa wanachama. In 1998, Juhudi, one of Elimu’s founders, saw in the community around him that children were growing up and becoming involved in criminal behavior because of a lack of education from a young age. He started an Early Childhood Development (ECD) center, together with Francis, to solve this challenge by giving children a good foundation.

We learned that while we worked on educating children, we were not addressing the whole issue, as it was a community issue. They also needed to be involved and to have basic education skills. This is when we decided to expand our services to the community and Elimu Community Light was founded.

The name Elimu Community Light came from an idea that Juhudi shared. “If you have the education, you have the source of light to light your future.” Elimu means Education in Swahili.

Tumefurahi kuwa tumeanza kufanya kazi na shule ya Maweni! Ijumaa iliyopita, tulitembelea shule hiyo kwa mara ya kwanza na kufanya kipindi chetu cha kwanza cha mafunzo ya ualimu.

Tulianza kutoa mafunzo katika shule hiyo baada ya mwalimu tuliyekuwa tumemfunza kuhamishiwa huko. Aliona kwamba walimu aliowakuta hawakua na uzoefu kuhusu kutumia zana k**a injia rahisi za kufundishia na kujifunza kwa watoto. Hivyo aliona kwamba shule ingenufaika na mafunzo yetu.

Tuliwafahamisha walimu mbinu kuu tunazotumia katika kufundisha watoto: mbinu shirikishi na wazeshi kwa watoto kujifunza, jinsi ya kutengeneza zana rahisi zinazopatikana katika mazingira yao katika kufundishia na kujifunzia, jinsi ya kuzitumia darasani, na jinsi ya kujenga uhusiano na wazazi wa wanafunzi. Ili waweze kusaidia watoto wao kujifunza.

Tunatazamia kuendelea kujenga uhusiano na kufanya kazi na shule ya Maweni!

We’re excited to have started working with Maweni School! Last Friday, we visited the school for the first time and held our first teacher training session.

We were invited to train at the school after a teacher we had trained previously was transferred there. She saw that the teachers currently didn’t know about or use some of the teaching methods we teach and that the school would benefit from our training.

We introduced the teachers to the main methods we focus on: how to teach children in an engaging and interactive style, how to make learning aids by recycling local materials, how to use them in a classroom, and how to build relationships with students’ parents so that they can aid in their students’ learning.

We look forward to continuing to build relationships and work with Maweni School!

Elimu Community Light’s teacher training empowers good teachers to be even better.

Inspired by one of her own teachers, Dorice Yohana, a pre-primary teacher at Sinon Primary School in Arusha, now teaches her own students to love school. About 10 years ago, Dorice participated in one of our teacher training courses. Dorice says that the things she learned from Elimu simplified teaching for her. She has taken ownership of the methods we taught her and continues to work with us.

In her classroom, Dorice engages her students through singing, games, and learning materials. By touching and feeling, not just seeing the blackboard, the children are able to understand and remember their lessons better.

“If they understand, they will love and enjoy school.”

Now, arts and crafts materials stock the shelves of the classroom, math problem cards are available for each table, and posters hang from all the walls of the classroom. Dorice learned from Elimu how to make these materials out of readily available materials, so she is not limited by a budget.

Elimu also taught her how to track her students’ progress using a gradebook system and build relationships with the children’s parents. Now if a student is struggling, she is better able to help them.

In 2019, Dorice’s hard work and good skills were recognized, and she was given the Arusha Best Teacher Award. We are proud to have been part of the training of such a remarkable teacher and the hundreds of children she has reached.
