In Kigamboni,Dar es salaam,we have/had one of our centres at Mnadani.
Mnadani is a swahili word for auction / market place. That is where our training ground was...on Thursday was market day and Fridays we would have to clean the place and clear it of the wooden display racks to make space for training.
Fast forward to 2023,we have a new location in one of the local schools. The two schools Tungi Primary and secondary share a common pitch.
The school administration also allowed us access to the pitch on the weekends..open to the kids in the neighborhood.
Our aim.?To make hockey accessible to and memorable for as many kids as possible!

And yes...sometimes we still train in the school square to shield the kids from the scorching sun!

In Kigamboni in Dar es Salaam is one of our centers Tungi.Other than sessions in school ( Tungi Primary and Tungi Secondary,) the kids from the neighbourhood join the weekend sessions.
Sometimes they get to take the ferry to cross over to our other center,JMK Youth Park,in the heart of the city.

It is with deep and profound sorrow that we announce the passing away of our dear friend and beloved coach Magan Athumani Mnonda.
Babu,as he was fondly called ,passed away on the 26th of July.
It is indeed a big blow to all of us within the hockey fraternity.

It was his efforts and passion to make hockey accessible to all that led him and Valentina to think of starting the schools' program ,which has eventually shaped and developed hockey to what it is now in Tanzania.Up until his death,he was still involved ,working directly with the coaches and players .

Mr.Magan was the vice chairman of Tanzania Hockey Association, a position he held after being Dar Es Salaam Hockey Association chairman for many years.
He was also the National Men's team coach and National Women's team manager.

He was a great friend to many of us and a mentor to all of us.
It is indeed an honor to have known and worked with this great man.

Rest in peace,dear friend!

Ukonga center has 110 kids and players , ranging from 5 to 21 years old.The centre is run by super coach Elizabeth George. At Ukonga Grounds, there is always an activity for every kid, even the ones who don't feel ready to play hockey at the moment.

"To keep the kids engaged in hockey I let them be just kids.Give them no hockey days where they can connect with their team mates or agemates on other activities."

This past weekend(25 to 27 March) under 21s from Dar es Salaam travelled to Tanga for their first tournament outside Dar,The Mapinduzi Cup.The trip was sponsored by JMK Park ,who have also been organizing and hosting the Likizo(,Holiday) Cup Tournaments.
We had a total of 35 players ,18 in their own team with the remaining 17 playing for various senior teams.Majority of the players are 18 years, with the youngest being 16.
It was the first time majority of them were playing against senior teams.
The first match against Tanga Stars was 1-1,second match 2-1 in favour of the stronger and semi finalist Arusha Twigas.
Third and final match was 5 - 0 against All time finalist Moshi Khalsa.
The players have been in our schools' development program since 2017.
It has been a long journey but we are happy to finally see our young players being recruited to senior teams.
The first two photos are our current under 21s when they played in as under 14s in their first national tournament.

No training session is ever complete until the team photo is done!
This is part of creating and capturing the memories for our players.
There is always a story behind each smile... sometimes it is about a new skill learnt or mastered,or just the joy of being back on the pitch.
Every drop of sweat is worth it!
Congratulations to our coaches for making training sessions fun!

The JMK Park Likizo Cup tournament came to a close after five days of exciting and thrilling hockey from our junior players.
The 5 aside tournament, with 7 players per team brought together a total of 14 teams (under 14 category)and another 13 teams ( under 18 category).
The teams came from schools and community centres under the schools' program.
The under 14 teams :
Boys: Buza, Kibondemaji, Mzambarauni Heroes , Mzambarauni Stars,Amani Panda ,Amani Lions, Almadrassa, kigamboni A, and Kigamboni B.
Girls:Buza, Kibondemaji,Simba Princess and Simba Queens.

The under 18 teams:
Boys: Kibasila,Juhudi fighters,Juhudi Strikers, ilala, Almadrassa, Buza and Community teams The Hockey Rangers,The Winners, kigamboni A and Kigamboni B.

Girls:Buza, Ilala Queens,Dar Queens.

The under 14 boys final between Almadrassa and Kibondemaji started on a high note, with Almadrassa bagging their first goal within seconds of starting the game.
The seemingly rattled Kibondemaji, quickly conceded a second goal within minutes of the first goal.It was the first time the two teams were playing each other. The first half ended with Almadrassa leading 2-0.Another quick goal into the second half had them leading 3-0.
known for their no giving up spirit, Kibondemaji settled into the game, albeit late and put in 2 goals past the Almadrassa kicking back ,putting the final scores at 3-2.

In the under 18 boys category group stage matches, arch rivals Almadrassa and kigamboni A battled it out in a high tesion game that saw Kigamboni A topping their pool and Almadrassa coming second, setting up Kigamboni A for the first semifinal against Kibasila, in a match that saw Kigamboni fighting back from 2-0 to book a slot in the finals after a 4-2 victory.
In the second semifinal,Juhudi Fighters sailed their way to the finals after winning their match 5-2 against a hard fighting Al madrassa team.

The under 18 finals pitched two teams (kigamboni and Juhudi Fighters) with a long history of hockey and rivalry, since they first met in 2015 in the under 14s category.
In the highly charged match, Kigamboni took and maintained an early lead by capitalizing on the mistakes made by Juhudi Fighters. In the second half, with a lead of 3 goals ,the kigamboni kicking back was carded and sent off the pitch, giving Juhudi fighters a chance to sneak a goal in.The match ended with a 4- 1 score ,in favour of Kigamboni A.

In the girls matches, under 14 simba Queens were crowned winners against Buza primary Girls.
In the Under 18 category,Buza secondary bagged the Gold medals after winning against Ilala Secondary .In the under 18 category, there was special team appearance by Dar Queens comprised of under 21 players.

The inaugural Likizo cup tournament was sponsored by our long term partners JMK Youth Park and organized by Twendehockey in collaboration with Tanzania Hockey Association.

This month we featured in the second edition of the Hockeynewsbeat,an online magazine by Magongo Kenya.
Each time our story is shared we are reminded of why we chose to join Tanzania in this beautiful hockey journey.
It is a truly rewarding experience as we meet and work with wonderful kids everyday!

09/06/2020

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all the activities had to stop. It has not been an easy time for our young players who have really missed their hockey sessions. Each of the sessions is usually more than just hockey...it is the friendships built over time, the happiness and the laughter , the ups and downs. It is about being a family!

As we are preparing to resume the activities, meet our coaches.Tag them and share a word with them as we prepare to play hockey in a whole different way.

This year we celebrated the Olympic Day with tournaments all over Tanzania! Within one week, from the 15th to the 23rd of June, we had in 6 different regions youth tournaments where children and young players from 10 to 20 years old gather together to celebrate the Olympic Day! Around 1.000 boys and girls from primary and secondary schools, universities and communities came together to join the beauty to play and have fun together, without any cultural or social barriers... The events were organized through the support and collaboration of several stakeholders, among them the Tanzania Olympic Committee, NGOs like OCODE, WeWorld, Twende and COPE, companies like Keko Fabrication Ltd and the members of Tanzania Hockey Association.
Thanks to everybody who did and effort to make it possible, we have broken our record of last year celebration!
