TIkTOk in Africa.

In series of letters from African journalists, Kenyan broadcaster considers whether African governments should be joining in with the rising chorus of concern over TikTok.

A Senegalese lobby group, known as Restic, appeal to the regulator there to help control what young people can see.
"Unfortunately, the content on TikTok is very violent and some features in this context are not allowed by our traditions here in Africa," Resitc's Moustapha Diakhate.

No country on the continent has yet taken measures against TikTok.
What’s your thoughts on this?

South Africa's Gupta extradition bid from UAE fails!

The 2 brothers Atul Gupta and Rajesh Gupta are accused in South Africa of profiting from their close links with former President Jacob Zuma and exerting unfair influence.

The brothers deny any wrongdoing, but fled after a judicial commission began probing a major corruption scandal.

The Indian-born Guptas were arrested in the UAE last June and extradition talks with South Africa began!

The news is a blow for South Africa's fight to bring the Guptas to justice.
An official inquiry, known as the Zondo commission, took four years to probe allegations of high-level corruption under the Zuma presidency, exposing how billions of dollars were looted from state coffers.

Will they brought to book? Or this will go down as another African witch-hunt !

Dr William Samoei Ruto came in as the master Surgeon.... He promised to deal with the cost of living in 100 days...
He inherited an economy in ICU, bleeding profusely....
So what does a master Surgeon do?
First, stop the bleeding...
What was the problem with the subsidy? 5 companies were getting 7.65 billion every month... In other words, 5 companies have received 68.85 billion since January.... In one year, the 5 companies would have gotten 130 billion, nearly half of what the 47 counties are getting.
What was the impact?
1. 1,200 independent petrol stations petrol stations giving direct and indirect income to about 500,000 Kenyans were shut during the subsidy period... These independent companies controlled 45 %of the market before the subsidy started... President Uhuru and his Co President, Raila (both have huge personal stake in the Petrol Industry) created a scenario that kicked out players that controlled 45%...of the market and were in the process of giving the companies connected to them 100% of the market....

2. The payment of the subsidy was completely opaque.. The government was depending on data provided by the 5 companies themselves. Chances of them inflating the data from their side...

So, what is Daktari Ruto doing?
Remember, if you want to get healed, you need to get sindano first...
First, Daktari is bringing back to the market 1,200 players who were unfairly kicked out. This will bring back competition. Daktari is killing the oligarchy and introducing competition...he is bringing back the Petrol Stations owned by kawaida Mwananchi and not just the Dynasties..
Second, Daktari is stopping the bleeding and pilfering of public funds in an Opaque way.... The money saved will go to reduce production costs in Fertilizer...

This is just our 3rd day in power... Within 100 days, you will see the fruits...
Tulia, Daktari ana tibu Kenya..

So he translated some of the comments that were written mostly in Arabic, because it finds its majority indicate the extent of the similarity between him and the former head of an Arab state, located in Africa called "Libya"
Now marketing companies are calling him to get advertising contracts from him. Then the man commented, "That leader that I resemble must have been a good man." How can a man like him saved people like me out of poverty and su***de to be evil?

Chinua Achebe at his house in Enugu, Nigeria. 1959

He is one of Africa's most acclaimed authors and considered by some to be the father of modern African literature. His early novels, including the groundbreaking Things Fall Apart (1958) and No Longer at Ease (1960), describe poignantly the effects of European colonialism on Igbo society, Nigeria, and newly independent African nations.

He taught at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1976-81), and was founding editor (1971) of the influential journal Okike. Achebe returned to the novel form with Anthills of the Savannah (1987). He has also written numerous short stories, children's books, and a book of essays, Home and Exile (2000), reflecting on his and his nation's coming of age.

South Sudan cancels independence celebrations due to Covid-19 fears!

In an extraordinary sitting chaired by President Salva Kiir in Juba on Wednesday, the cabinet advised the public to mark the day in their homes as part of measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

South Sudan, Africa’s youngest nation, is marking 10 years of independence on Friday.

The country had fought a 21-year civil war with Khartoum before attaining autonomy in 2005. It received independence following a referendum in 2011 in which the majority of the population voted to separate from the Sudan.

But shortly after celebrating this win, the country plunged into a civil war just two years later. A peace deal was reached but another bout of conflict erupted in 2016, before a second peace deal—the revitalized peace agreement of 2018—was reached.

Despite all the civil wars and sufferings, South Sudan is banking on the revitalised peace agreement to rebuild its institutions, The Government is relying on the hopes of its people to rally for that goal!

What do you think South Sudan needs so as to attain Justice , Liberty and Prosperity?
I would love to hear your views in the comments.

Ethiopian government chooses to foster period of silence in the Tigray Region!

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed In an address to parliament on Monday expressed that his federal government has chosen -- not out of military necessity, to foster a period of silence to reflect on what is to come as far as the nations’ northern region Tigray -- the scene of civil war for eight months.

"In one, two or three weeks 100,000 trained, armed and organized special forces can be mobilized.

"If the special force isn't enough, if a militia is needed, in one or two months half a million militiamen can be organized. As you know our population is 100 million, one million youths can be mobilized and trained.

Abiy''s remarks came one week after the Ethiopian government declared a unilateral ceasefire in the Tigray conflict and executed a claimed strategic withdrawal of federal forces to focus on other threats -- following the seizure of Mekele and most of the rest of the northern region by the Tigray Defence Forces rebel group. The armed group viewed its reoccupation as a victory.

Tigrayan leaders on Sunday issued their first formal response to Abiy's unilateral ceasefire declared around a week prior, saying they would only accept it if forces from Eritrea and Ethiopia's Amhara region -- who have been backing the Ethiopian army -- also withdrew from the area.

They also called for "proceedings" to hold Abiy and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki accountable for "damage" inflicted during the fighting, which has been marked by grisly massacres and widespread sexual violence.

Abiy is yet to address these conditions.

1 - Brink of famine

Thousands of people have been killed in the conflict and many hundreds of thousands face hunger in Tigray, an important economic and industrial region in the Horn of Africa nation.

According to the United Nations, over 400,000 people have already "crossed the threshold into famine" in Tigray and 1.8 million people are on the brink.

Electricity and communications have been cut, flights suspended and two bridges crucial for aid deliveries have been destroyed.

Last week the TDF paraded what it said were thousands of captive Ethiopian soldiers through the streets of Mekele.

In his remarks Monday, however, Abiy said the TDF seized territory only because the army decided to leave, a process he said unfolded for more than a month.

He also offered lavish praise for the army.

"Our defence forces are not paid enough. They climb up and down mountains. In the rain, in the sun, they fight for the dignity of the country," Abiy said.

2 - Embassy and driver cuts

Officials have in recent days highlighted the cost of the war in Tigray as a reason for why federal forces withdrew.

Ethiopia’s economy, which relies heavily on tourism and agriculture, has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and the worst locust infestation in decades, with the war in Tigray adding an extra strain on state finances.

On Monday Abiy repeated his claim that the government had spent more than $2 billion on infrastructure and other projects in the region to help it recover.

He also proposed several eyebrow-raising budgetary measures including closing some 30 embassies.

"Ethiopia shouldn't have 60 or so embassies and consulates in the present moment. Instead of throwing US dollars everywhere... at least 30 of the embassies should be closed and the ambassadors instead should be here," he said.

He said the Ethiopian ambassador to Kenya, for example, could be based in Addis Ababa and travel to Kenya to meet with officials while reading about Kenya in newspapers.

Instead of hiring drivers, Abiy said, government ministers will be required to drive themselves.

"What we want is a person who gets wet in the mud and runs while reforming the country," he said.

Key takeaways from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni COVID-19 address;

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has on Saturday evening addressed the Country on the State of COVID-19.

President Museveni noted that it’s unfortunate that the government has tried it’s best to protect the citizens from the scourge though the public has not taken these measures seriously.

The President announced that the country had registered 690 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday hiking the cumulative number of cases to 46,623 with 43,401 recoveries as well as 362 deaths.

Last year started with locusts, floods, landslides, and also COVID-19 which came creeping from different parts of the world. On 18th March, we announced very serious measures even before we had the first case.

When we had controlled the epidemic, we announced deliberately calculated measures of the relaxation. However, the people who are not advisable took over.President Museveni: I hear that some of our young MPs are fundraising for cheap popularity. Stop that, you are putting many people’s lives in danger. This is not the time for cheap popularity.

Today I am just here to alert you. We are going to have a fullscale National Task Force meeting on Wednesday and we shall communicate what we have agreed.

Ugandans who are in the villages, if you are not doing serious work, don’t come to Kampala or Wakiso. Stay in your villages, they are safe. Kampala and Wakiso are full of COVID-19 because people here don’t listen.

These new infections are quite serious. For example, from the new cases recorded on 25th May, the asymptomatic were 5, mild were 59, severe 59, and critical 9.

When we opened schools for the finalists from October 15th to March, we only had 239 cases in the schools. Recently, 803 cases have been confirmed in the schools and one of them died.

The whole strategy hinges on minimizing the infections. That is why we succeeded last year.

Towards the end of next week, I will make another broadcast and give you a detailed way forward.
