When it comes to raising improved chicken breeds, the feed costs can be significantly higher. To mitigate this, many farmers opt to formulate their own feeds to reduce production costs.

By doing this, they can increase their profitability and sustainability, making their poultry operations more viable in the long run.

Yesterday, we visited our inspiring alumnus, Peter Mungere, with Jil Soika Project Coordinator, Schorlemer Stiftung. Peter, an Operations Manager and former graphics designer, transitioned into farming during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the knowledge and skills he gained from his time in Germany, he has remarkably expanded his poultry farm from 4,000 to 12,000 birds, now producing an average of 400 trays of eggs daily.

Peter is a shining example of the impact of our program, and he's now a beacon of hope for his community, inspiring other farmers who haven't had the same opportunities. His success story is a testament to the power of empowering youth in agriculture.

Yesterday, each alumnus received a grant of 400 Euros (approximately to 1.6M UGX) after the mock business plan pitching session at the workshop closing ceremony.

The second Alumni program workshop is in progress from today June 5th to tomorrow. We've started with a recap from the previous session held in May, where participants gained valuable insights on how to make a business plan, personal development among others.

Today, the alumni will take their learning to the next level with mock presentations on pitching and business plan reviews. Our team of experts, led by Joseph Wandera and Ronald Mayanja, will guide them through interactive sessions designed to sharpen their skills and prepare for the pitching event slated in September 2024.
We're excited to see our alumni grow and make a positive impact in their communities.

“You cannot pitch well when you do not know what your business plan encompasses,” says Ronald.

Saturday saw us visit a dairy farm by the Kenya National Farmers Federation. This is a family farm that stresses the need to pour down farming knowledge from one generation to another. The current owner’s son was influenced by his father and also his passion for farming. He is just 12 years old.

The Farmer Organization Video Library, which is shared by both UNYFA and Kenya National Farmers' Federation has been with us all the way on this tour.

You can visit https://unyfa.fo-library.org/ to learn more about modern farming methods.

The third day of our agribusiness tour ended with some fun alone the River Nile. Our tour is not just about gaining knowledge, but also about building connections and community. We're bridging the gap between interns and experienced farmers, fostering a network of young and seasoned professionals who are passionate about a sustainable future together.

Our only visit today was at SALINEST, an agribusiness farm in Nakifuma. This is a farm that specializes in seedling production particularly vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, lettuce, spinach, and other herbs.

The vegetable seedling business requires careful planning, attention to detail, and a passion for horticulture. By understanding market demand, production processes, and marketing strategies, one can build a sustainable business in this field.

We paid a visit to Slight farm in Namulonge. A family farm that specializes in dairy and poultry farming but also has a banana plantation.

They also grow different types of pastures on the farm to cater for animal feeds. Did you know that there are different kinds of Napier grass or commonly known as elephant grass? Check it out on our FOVL: https://unyfa.fo-library.org/videos/super-napier-from-planting-to-harvesting-2/

They also have sheep and a biogas plant on the farm.

Waste management is very important on all farms.
From the biogas specialist perspective, "If life and farm gives you waste, build a biogas plant. There alot of benefits that come with biogas" he says.

Our Story

UNYFA is an umbrella body for young farmers in Uganda started in 2016 and launched in June 2017 as a duly incorporated member-based organization, with a registration number 80020000478713 under section 18(3) of Companies Act 2012. It has 54 members which are district young farmers associations, farmer youth groups and school agricultural clubs totaling to 24,000 individual young farmers.

UNYFA is driven by the desire to have a holistically transformed youth in agriculture for a sustainable economy: its target group is of youth between 12 to 39 years of age who are rural and/or urban agro-based and young farmers in and out of school/ Institutions. Due to diverse interests of farmer groups/farmers’ based organizations, young farmers need specific training; UNYFA provides platforms for these youths where they can express and acquire tailor-made training.

Youths have the propensity to move with the changing dynamics of the world and are capable of formulating and taking lead in farmer-based organizations. If Uganda is to realize development, the youth need to be involved in development programs so as to reduce the dependency syndrome and to transform youth groups into a productive force.
