A recent study by the Uganda Youth Development Link has shown a rise in su***de cases among adolescents aged 15 to 19 years. This is attributed to psychological distress and substance abuse. This however points to a bigger problem of mental health that each of us must pick interest in to save the younger generation. ChildFund is big on Child Protection, a key ingredient in enabling children live to their full potential.

Research shows that chronic exposure to adverse childhood experiences such as violence can cause the brain to experience toxic stress, disrupting healthy development and causing problems that often persist into adulthood. The good news is that violence against children is completely preventable. At ChildFund, we’re committed to helping create a world where it no longer exists.

"I feared becoming like my brothers who dropped out of school before completing because my mother couldn't afford paying fees for them. During the month of April 2022, I seemed to have lost my dream of becoming a Nurse because my mother couldn't raise the registration fees and had given up.
The visit by a team from ChildFund Uganda made a significant turning point in my life. During the visit, I was counselled and promised support to do my registration and other school requirements, which was fulfilled the next day.
I am currently writing my S.4 UNEB exams and hope to pass and continue pursuing my dream of becoming a Nurse" narrates Sarah from Kyenda, Butemba community.

This morning we share in the joy of this group of youth from Dokolo who received goats from through Lango Child and Community Development Federation (LACCODEF). Before they were given a goat each, they were taken through training on how to properly care for them in order to reap highly from the venture. Because of the fast multiplication effect of animals, initiatives such as goat keeping enhance the livelihoods of participants in the long run.

Shivan is one of the children participating in ChildFund programs. She lives in one of Kampala's suburbs and accessing her school involves crossing one of the busiest roads in the city. Luckily, her aunt es**rts her to ensure her safe crossing and picks her up from the school in the evening. Part of children’s protection involves ensuring their safety to and from school.

We urge parents/caregivers to es**rt children to school, especially the younger ones to prevent unnecessary accidents that would jeopardize their lives.

Did you know that climate change is contributing to the increase in child protection risks?? It is and in a big way. Our friends and ardent supporters Barnfonden (ChildFund Sweden) have published an elaborate document with strategies to end violence against children in a changing climate. See below excerpt

“Roughly one billion children aged 2-17 experience physical, sexual, or emotional violence each year (1,2). Climate change-exacerbated increases in droughts and water scarcity, floods, other natural disasters, and rising temperatures have effects on migration, conflict, poverty and food insecurity, psychosocial health, and stress (3–7). These in turn increase the incidence of violence against children, such as child labour, child marriage, sexual abuse, physical abuse, gender-based violence, neglect, trafficking, and mental health issues (8–16).” Violence against children has a lifelong
impact on the health and well-being of a child.
The protection of children from all forms of violence is a fundamental right upheld in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. However, formal planning, policy and response systems and structures do not put ‘climate change’ and ‘protection
of children from violence in the same space. Access the full document here https://t.co/X8qPoiOW0A

We were happy to host a team from UNICEF Uganda in Kyankwanzi district last Thursday as they sought to better understand our work by visiting different project sites. They were led by Nada W. Elattar, the Early Childhood Development Specialist & Manager (in a cap). They were keen on learning more about our Early Childhood Development & learning implementation model and how it intersects with the rest of our programs targeting children of different ages and their families. With Children on holiday, they were able to interact with caretakers of Butemba ECD Centre which has an enrolment of 93 children. The visit was facilitated by Community Efforts for Child Empowerment (CECE) our implementing partner in the area. The team leader of CECE Allen Nanyonga ensured that our guests interacted with different program participants including youth on vocational skilling plus those that graduated and have thriving businesses & families whose livelihoods were transformed by gifts such as cows and goats.
We hope that this visit strengthens our relationship with UNICEF Uganda and builds a stronger foundation for future partnerships and synergies based on a mutual understanding of individual entities’ goals and missions.

Together with the AfriChild, yesterday we successfully launched the Budget Analysis report on Child Protection in Uganda.

The event that took place at the Sheraton Hotel, Kampala was attended by Members of Parliament, District Leaders, Police, Probation Officers from the national to the district level, CSOs, and representation from other actors working with children. The Minister of State for the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development Hon. Amos Lugoloobi was the Guest of Honour.

ChildFund Uganda in partnership with AfriChild commissioned the Budget Analysis of “Child Protection” to analyze Government of Uganda budget allocation trends i.e, disbursements and expenditure for the past five Fiscal Years, FY2017/18 – FY2021/22 to generate evidence for advocacy.

ChildFund Uganda has prioritized budget advocacy around child protection as a strategic intervention that will contribute to the well-being of children in the country. The overall goal of ChildFund’s advocacy plan is to increase budgetary allocation to the Child Protection Sector at the national and district level for effective policy and legislative implementation.
The analysis revealed that the allocation for the past five Financial Years has been low. The budgetary allocations have been characterized by a fluctuating trend and hence affecting the government’s commitment to implement child protection interventions.

“We cannot emphasize enough the importance of protecting children and the role that we all must play in our capacities to create a safe and violence-free environment for them. This involves ensuring that sufficient funding is allocated by the government to child protection interventions.” The Country Director Moses Otai said as he addressed the guests.

The GOH Hon. Amos Lugoloobi called for continuous dissemination of the budget analysis report to ensure the information gets to the people directly involved in the budgeting processes. He noted that there has been an information gap about the magnitude of child protection risks and the challenges this pauses to the country’s development if it's prioritized in budgeting and addressed with urgency.

"We need to escalate the interventions towards child protection because we are dealing with a problem that affects the future generation. Heaven will judge us harshly if we don't do anything about this,"- said Hon. Lugoloobi in addition to pledging to champion the call to increase budget allocation to child protection.

As we join the world to celebrate International today, we celebrate all the hard-working youth such as Paul (maroon shirt) and ketty (braiding hair) from Northern Uganda and every one of you that follows our work here. We celebrate you! Paul is now the go-to carpenter in his community. He acquired skills in carpentry with the support of ChildFund and now provides furniture products in different forms and Ketty is making her fellow women glow by plaiting their desired hairstyles. We love to see such stories of youth that are making a difference not just in their own lives and that of their families but in their entire community. Happy

Good morning from Kyankwanzi District!
Kamiyatih may be only 16, but she’s not too young to start piecing her future together one stitch at a time. She is attending ChildFund’s vocational training center to learn a practical skill that she can use to support herself as she grows. This skill is will support her to be independent and have control over her life. With something to occupy her time and earn her money, this also lessens the pressure to get married young and gives her more control o her future💪

For this , let's talk about human trafficking
What do you know about human trafficking?? This atrocious practice has robbed families of their loved ones and unfortunately, children that are vulnerable are more prone to being trafficked. However, if we all can be armed with the information on how to identify perpetrators, we can be each other’s keepers and prevent the next person/child from being a victim of human trafficking.
The screenshots below define Human Trafficking and also provide the 3 components that must be present in cases of human trafficking and child trafficking
1. Act
2. Means
3. Purpose

It was a delight to host this awesome team of
ChildFund Africa leaders in the just concluded leadership team meeting that took place at the Common Wealth Resort Munyonyo.
The week comprised of discussions focused on how we can continue to grow and increase our reach while deepening our impact across the continent. This was in addition to field visits to different projects in Busia, Kyankwanzi, Kampala, and Wakiso areas. In these places, the leaders met with different stakeholders that play key roles in the implementation of our work and children participating in our programs. To conclude the field visits, the guests visited Kawempe Division Action Centre, Rubaga Division Action Centre, and St. Martin Primary School Mulago. Here the guests had a chance to interact with children that are members of the Child-Friendly Accountability Club. It's an active group of self-motivated children that are already doing a lot for themselves and their peers both in school and in their community when it comes to advocating for various issues that affect children. For instance, they collected money, purchased materials, and with the support of their teachers invited trainers to teach girls how to make reusable sanitary pads to reduce the challenge of absenteeism by girls when they are in their periods.

It's the last day of the Africa Leadership Meeting taking place and the Common Wealth Resort Munyonyo. The team has been graced by the Commissioner of Youth and Children Affairs at the Ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development Mondo Kyateka. While addressing the team, he said that the relationship between government and development partners should be a symbiotic one.
"One based on mutual interest, respect, and above all placing our people at the heart of our agenda because we need each other," Mondo emphasized.
